Until fully recovering Mind Power, Xunuo carefully examined the place where the Silverback Black Wolf was hiding.
The Silverback Black Wolf lay on its side beneath a steep cliff. This cliff rose abruptly at the edge of the forest, towering about a hundred feet high, with no end in sight on either side. It seemed to divide the world into two distinct realms, as if by some supernatural force.
Xunuo had chased over from the forest opposite the cliff and had now circled around to its base. Behind the Silverback Black Wolf, there was a deep pool nearly a hundred feet wide.
With the restoration of Divine Sense, Xunuo regained much of his confidence. After surveying the terrain, he began to contemplate how to kill the Silverback Black Wolf. Despite its broken leg and apparent slumber, Xunuo felt no certainty that he could deliver a fatal blow, or even hit it at all.
After some reflection, Xunuo considered his available methods: one was swordsmanship and the other was Spell. No matter how skilled Xunuo was with his sword, there was no way he could approach within striking distance without being detected by the Silverback Black Wolf. He was clear about this; without a surprise attack, there was no chance for a guaranteed hit. If he couldn't ensure a hit, he wouldn't be able to take it down, so he dismissed swordsmanship as an option.
Thinking further about stealth attacks, Fire Manipulation Technique also seemed impractical. Firstly, the flames produced by Fire Manipulation Technique were too hot and lacked concealment. Secondly, which was particularly unfortunate for Xunuo, after combining it with Object Manipulation Technique, it became a powerful long-range attack tool. However, due to his limited magical power, Xunuo's range for spell attacks was pitifully small. Even at full strength, he couldn't exceed thirty feet; beyond that, his power would dissipate.
Xunuo understood that spells required magical energy to cast. The amount of magical energy directly influenced the effectiveness of spells. Thirty feet was currently the limit of his magical reach. Remaining undetected by the Silverback Black Wolf at this distance was already a significant challenge for him. If he attempted to cast Fire Manipulation Technique from this range without being noticed, it would be an impossible task.
However, Xunuo had one trump card: the highly anticipated Heavenly Shadow Spike. He knew that if he used Object Manipulation Technique to control the Heavenly Shadow Spike for a surprise attack on the Silverback Black Wolf, such a slow and weak attack would be akin to scratching its itch from afar.
But instead of using Object Manipulation Technique, Xunuo planned to throw it with his own strength. Given that the Heavenly Shadow Spike was not affected by True Qi, if he infused enough True Qi into it while throwing, its momentum would not diminish within thirty to fifty feet.
Although Xunuo had never practiced throwing hidden weapons before, he possessed an advantage that ordinary martial artists could hardly match: his Divine Sense. As long as something fell within its coverage and was locked onto by his Divine Sense, the accuracy of the Heavenly Shadow Spike would be flawless.
After confirming his plan to ambush the Silverback Black Wolf with the Heavenly Shadow Spike, Xunuo began calculating various possible outcomes. A single strike could either kill or miss entirely. If he missed and the Silverback Black Wolf fled, there was no way for him to spare any portion of his precious Divine Sense. He would have no choice but to let it escape. Just like if he succeeded in killing it with one strike, this chase would come to an end as well.
In another scenario, if a single strike does not kill the target, one must prevent it from escaping into the forest. It is best to drive it towards a deep pool, where it cannot leverage its speed advantage. With a well-thought-out plan, Xunuo drew out a Heavenly Shadow Spike and quietly approached the hiding place of the Silverback Black Wolf.
When Xunuo was about a hundred yards away from the Silverback Black Wolf, he could see it clearly. The wolf lay on its side in a patch of crimson grass, facing him. This patch of red grass grew alone at the base of a cliff, surrounded by barren yellow earth. On the adjacent cliff, several berries, dark red to purple in color, grew unexpectedly.
Xunuo's eyes lit up. These berries were a primary ingredient for crafting the Unity Pill, known as Purple Juniper Berries. The Purple Juniper Berry only turns red after a hundred years and can be used for medicine then. As time passes, its color deepens every hundred years until it becomes purple at five hundred years. The Purple Juniper Berries needed for the Unity Pill must be at least a hundred years old. The dark red to purple Purple Juniper Berries clearly indicated they were over several hundred years old and were recorded in Dan Jue as an ingredient for crafting an even higher-grade elixir. Such aged herbs are considered Heavenly Materials and Earthly Treasures wherever they are found. Although Xunuo was just a novice in the cultivation world, he still had some insight and cunning.
Xunuo suppressed his excitement, knowing that dealing with the immediate trouble was the priority; everything else was within reach. He slowly reduced the distance between himself and the wolf to fifty yards.
At this point, there was no cover nearby. The grass and plants on the ground had become sparse. If the Silverback Black Wolf opened its eyes now, it would realize that it was in a standoff with Xunuo. Xunuo had already suppressed his breath, making even his heartbeat faint.
Estimating the distance to the Silverback Black Wolf again, Xunuo felt it was still uncertain and silently moved forward another ten yards. By this time, he was feeling somewhat exhausted; this stealthy approach required more mental effort than simply charging forward. He thought to himself that taking another step might expose him and decided to stop there.
True Qi had long since filled his body; he suddenly exerted force. The Heavenly Shadow Spike shot forward like lightning towards the Silverback Black Wolf. What Xunuo did not expect was that just as the Heavenly Shadow Spike was about to hit its mark, the wolf rolled away as if fate had spared it, narrowly avoiding a fatal blow. The Heavenly Shadow Spike pierced through the wolf's abdomen and exited through its back, embedding itself in the ground.
The Silverback Black Wolf leaped up violently from the severe injury. Seeing Xunuo rushing towards him while a wall of fire blocked his escape back into the forest, panic set in. With a gaping wound about an inch wide from the Heavenly Shadow Spike's strike, blood gushed forth instantly.
Having been relentlessly pursued by Xunuo, fear gripped the Silverback Black Wolf. It dared not linger to resist and leaped into the deep pool, disappearing from sight. In the next moment, however, it emerged on the opposite bank of the pool and fled along the cliff.
Xunuo did not anticipate that the deep pool would not hinder this beast's escape. He quickly stepped forward; with a stomp on the ground, the Heavenly Shadow Spike sprang up in response as Xunuo seized it and executed a swift maneuver over the water's surface to continue his pursuit.
At this point, the Silverback Black Wolf's speed had significantly diminished. Not only could it not shake off Xunuo but instead found itself gradually being caught up by him. The wolf continued fleeing along the cliff without entering the forest, leaving behind a trail of blood. At this stage, where it fled no longer mattered; following the blood trail would lead Xunuo right to it.
After pursuing for about an hour, Xunuo finally caught up with the Silverback Black Wolf. The beast was utterly exhausted and lay on its side, howling mournfully at that spot.
Xunuo walked over, discovering that this was an opening in a gorge on a steep cliff. It seemed to cleave a gap in the endless towering walls, merging two worlds with a drop of a hundred feet. The gorge was wide, and his Divine Sense could not reach its end. Inside the gorge, wild grass and strange trees thrived, shrouded in thick miasma. A Silverback Black Wolf lay on the ground, howling mournfully towards the depths of the gorge, filled with both endless fear and myriad hopes.
Xunuo observed and thought that the creature was calling for its companions. Naturally, he could not allow it to act recklessly; he cast a fireball that instantly turned the Silverback Black Wolf to ashes.
Using his Divine Sense to probe the Mountain Valley, Xunuo discovered that the miasma within the gorge was peculiar. It could actually hinder his Divine Sense, blocking much of his Mind Power.
Fearing that other mutated beasts might emerge from the gorge, Xunuo did not dare to linger. He waved his sleeve to scatter the ashes of the Silverback Black Wolf and retraced his steps. After passing a deep pool, Xunuo headed straight for the Purple Juniper Berry.
This was the first time Xunuo had seen such a high-grade spiritual herb. After examining it carefully for a moment, he took out a wooden box from his pocket and gently placed one Purple Juniper Berry inside.
Xunuo knew that there were countless precious medicinal materials in this mountain. This time, he had come prepared for hunting beasts and had brought several wooden boxes for collecting herbs, which unexpectedly proved useful. He placed the last Purple Juniper Berry into the wooden box. Just as he was about to close it, he suddenly heard a startled exclamation behind him: “Blazing Sun Grass!”
Upon hearing this voice, Xunuo was so shocked that he nearly dropped the wooden box to the ground. He quickly turned around and saw several people emerging from the forest.
