Xunuo was taken aback by the words. However, he maintained a calm demeanor and said, "Aside from my brute strength, I have nothing else of value. Could it be that he covets this? Did he choose me to be his laborer?"
Guo Shujiang, with a strange expression, thought for a moment and replied, "Junior Brother, don’t be anxious. I will inquire among acquaintances in the next few days to see if I can gather any information from elsewhere."
Xunuo could only nod in agreement. The two talked for a while longer but could not come to any conclusions, so they parted ways to sleep.
Though Xunuo lay down, his mind was in turmoil. Guo Shujiang's earlier remark sent chills down his spine.
He indeed possessed things that others might covet; whether it was the Huayang Classic or the Elixir Formula, both were unheard-of martial arts secrets. If these two items were discovered by Tian Feiyu, then there would be deeper intentions behind his desire to take Xunuo as a disciple. But he had always kept these items on him and had never revealed them in public. Could it be that Tian Feiyu's Divine Sense was so profound that he could see everything Xunuo kept hidden?
Meanwhile, Guo Shujiang was already snoring loudly, while Xunuo tossed and turned, unable to sleep.
Just as Xunuo was racking his brain over the matter, in a dim secret chamber of the Wuhua Sect, several individuals were discussing this very issue.
Two disciples in white stood before a long table, behind which sat an elderly man with a pale face and no beard—Outer Hall Master Gao Weiji.
Gao Weiji wore a warm expression as he said, "That man named Tian is too domineering; every year he gets to select disciples first. Now that there’s an outstanding candidate, he has already claimed him before the Outer Sect Competition even begins. Yet despite this, he cannot fully operate the Seven Star Sword Formation with just his Seven Star Sword Hall. It seems that Master has ultimately chosen a useless person to manage the Seven Star Sword Hall. I wonder if Master can rest in peace in the afterlife."
The two white-clad disciples exchanged glances discreetly.
One of them could no longer contain himself and said, "I noticed today that Master seemed dissatisfied with Tian Shishu's choice of Lu Zaisheng. I truly do not understand what makes Lu Zaisheng so special that it weighs heavily on Master’s mind."
Gao Weiji sighed and said, "The technique he used to win today, the one he is most familiar with, is the Eight Extremes Fist, not the Fist Technique taught by our sect. It was only when the Sect Master asked that I learned he obtained a manual of the Eight Extremes Fist from Wu Liangfang of the Iron Fist Sect and has been comprehending and practicing it on his own."
The white-clad disciple responded, "Our sect does not allow independent practice of the Eight Extremes Fist; it can only be practiced after being passed down by a master. But why is that?"
Gao Weiji glanced at him and replied, "This is the crux of the matter. There are three types of Fist Techniques in the martial world that test one's martial comprehension, and one of them is the Eight Extremes Fist. This Fist Technique is mostly passed down from master to disciple, with few able to comprehend it independently. Firstly, this technique is extremely difficult to grasp; secondly, while it may seem powerful, it can easily lead one astray. To wield it improperly can harm oneself as much as others, which is precisely what that means. The deeper one goes in martial arts, the more precious comprehension becomes. For instance, at my level as a master, I can only rely on the classics left by predecessors for understanding. Whatever I can grasp is all I can hope for; I cannot expect guidance from others. Take my fellow disciples from years ago who practiced the Seven Star Sword Formation together. Since no one could master the Sword Light Divergence Technique, we sought out someone with the highest swordsmanship to take over as Hall Master of the Seven Star Sword Hall. That turned out to be Tian Feiyu, who had exceptional comprehension and could produce five flowers with a single strike. I considered myself skilled in swordsmanship but could only manage four and a half flowers. Thus, I lost my position in the Seven Star Sword Hall to Tian Feiyu. At that time, the Sect Master wanted me to become a Vice Hall Master to assist Tian Feiyu with the Seven Star Sword Formation. However, given my nature, I refused and chose instead to oversee the Outer Hall. Ximen Tower was quite pitiful too; he could only produce four flowers and ended up taking over as Vice Hall Master of the Seven Star Sword Hall. Yet this person was cunning and eventually schemed his way into becoming Sect Master. While I could tolerate Tian Feiyu taking over the Seven Star Sword Hall—after all, he had suddenly gained insight into unparalleled sword techniques—it was infuriating that Ximen Tower took control of Wuhua Sect as Sect Master under the title of Vice Hall Master of Seven Star Sword Hall."
Finished speaking, a look of resentment appeared on his face.
A disciple interjected, "If the Eight Extremes Fist tests comprehension so rigorously, why doesn’t our sect allow disciples to practice it independently? Selecting those with high comprehension for focused training would surely be beneficial."
Gao Weiji scoffed coldly and said, "It's not as simple as you think. There was indeed a sect that allowed new Outer Sect Disciples to comprehend the Eight Extremes Fist. However, when things went awry during their practice, they ended up damaging their meridians and losing their martial abilities entirely. That generation of new disciples all failed to comprehend it successfully. Only those who are elite disciples from various sects can enter the Inner Sect; this incident caused great distress for that sect. Afterward, no one dared to engage in such self-destructive practices again. So now that Lu Zaisheng has managed to comprehend the Eight Extremes Fist so thoroughly on his own, every hall in our sect is envious."
The disciple continued, "Then why not let Outer Sect Disciples attempt to comprehend the Eight Extremes Fist? If they succeed, they would be geniuses; if they fail, it wouldn't hurt too much."
Gao Weiji glared at him and said, "Handing this Fist Technique over to Outer Sect Disciples would be tantamount to throwing it away entirely. Besides, although this Eight Extremes Fist is unique to our sect and not widely disseminated, do you think it can be easily given to Outer Sect Disciples? Do you consider it common like some generic technique?"
At that moment, another white-clad disciple asked, "What was that Sword Light Divergence Technique you mentioned earlier?"
Upon hearing this question, Gao Weiji's expression became serious.
He explained, "The Sword Light Divergence Technique is what we sword practitioners strive for—the highest realm we seek. All weapons originate from swords and spears; their might surpasses that of other weapons. In our martial world, we often say: 'A staff for a month; a knife for a year; a spear for life; a treasured sword always hidden.' This reflects how difficult it is to achieve mastery with spears and swords compared to simpler weapons like knives or staffs which can be practiced without deep techniques. A single thrust can end a fight far more effectively than numerous strikes; that's what highlights our spear and sword characteristics. If someone strikes me ten times with a staff, they may not necessarily threaten my life. But if I thrust once and hit their blood hole, it's game over for them. While spears and swords share similarities, they also differ significantly—firstly in how swords are lighter and less forceful than spears. Secondly, swords are short-range weapons; as the saying goes: 'An inch shorter means an inch more dangerous.' A master swordsman must skillfully use their hands and body movements; swords should strike from unexpected angles rather than head-on clashes where opponents can easily defend against straightforward attacks. If you thrust directly downwards with your sword, it's easy for others to block; but if you send out a Sword Flower instead, it's much harder for them to defend against it. If you were to strike with One Sword Five Flowers—then they'd have no way to counter at all! Even though you may not be part of the Seven Star Sword Hall, I've still taught you some advanced sword techniques that allow you to produce three or five flowers with your strikes—no worse than Tian Feiyu's disciples! However, as for this Sword Light Divergence Technique... even I have yet to touch its threshold. Currently in this world, there’s reportedly only one person capable of using it—a figure shrouded in mystery who hasn’t been heard from in years. Those who have witnessed their swordsmanship number fewer than ten fingers! If only I could receive guidance from this person... alas!"
As Gao Weiji spoke up until this point, his expression turned quite despondent. The two disciples noticed their master's low spirits and dared not speak casually; they stood quietly with their hands downcast while pondering their own thoughts.
Early the next morning, Xunuo arrived at the Outer Sect Disciple Manager's office. Although he had made it onto the rankings and no longer needed to do the heavy labor, he still had to pick up miscellaneous tasks to avoid any gossip.
When Zhang Changzai saw Xunuo, he immediately greeted him with a broad smile, saying, "Master Lu, there's no need to rush over personally. When Shishu has some free time, you can come by my residence to pay your respects and choose a miscellaneous task for Shishu."
Xunuo knew that this fat man was cunning and was merely showering him with flattery. He chose not to call him out on it and simply smiled, saying, "I wouldn't dare trouble Manager Zhang with such matters. I can handle this myself. What kind of task do you have arranged for me?"
Zhang Changzai feigned mystery and replied, "This task is one that I put a lot of thought into for Shishu. I don't know how many people I might have offended in the process. Do you think it will be to your satisfaction?"
With that, he presented the ledger of miscellaneous tasks, holding it out to Xunuo with both hands.
Upon seeing it, Xunuo's expression brightened. It seemed that what Zhang had said about offending quite a few people might indeed be true.
It turned out that the miscellaneous task Zhang Changzai had selected for Xunuo involved handling the finances.
