After much contemplation, Xunuo felt that perhaps it was due to his own practice of traveling through the night and resting at dawn.
He had not taken the time to calm his mind and meditate, which he suspected was a bit superficial.
So he decided to find a secluded place to earnestly cultivate for several days.
He would see if it was effective before making any further plans.
With this in mind, he traveled overnight to a remote cliff and found a giant tree.
Using his incredibly sharp Short Blade, he carved out a hollow three feet wide and four feet high in the trunk.
He squeezed himself inside, then sealed the opening with tree bark and nailed it shut with the Short Blade.
Only then did he feel at ease enough to sit cross-legged and settle his mind.
He eliminated all feelings of joy, anger, sorrow, and happiness one by one.
Finally, he formed hand seals and entered a meditative state.
According to the Huayang Classic, the first layer involved not only meditating to expand the Dantian but also filling the body with True Qi while expelling impurities.
The book referred to this process as True Qi filling the body.
This True Qi that Xunuo is contemplating should be what is referred to as Internal True Qi.
The flow within his Dantian resembles water, and it must be this.
The True Qi in his Dantian is already abundant, yet he has no means to activate or utilize it.
According to Lu Duhou, Internal True Qi should circulate through the Meridian.
However, this Huayang Classic does not contain such records.
This leaves Xunuo feeling quite perplexed.
After much contemplation, he believes that since the book mentions True Qi filling the body, it must indeed be full and overflowing.
He feels that while the True Qi in his Dantian is full, it has not overflowed, indicating that it is still not completely full.
Though he has felt that the True Qi in his Dantian has not increased over the past few days, there have been no abnormalities.
Unlike a few days ago when he sensed that the True Qi in his Dantian was full, and with just a bit of meditation, it would swell significantly.
After pondering this, he focused his energy into his Dantian and began to practice the Huayang Classic.
After a full day of cultivation, he felt as though a strand of True Qi had increased within his Dantian.
Xunuo felt a sense of relief as he found the right method, his worries diminishing as he entered a state of meditation once more.
As he continued, the increase of True Qi within his Dantian became increasingly evident.
The sensation of expansion in his Dantian reemerged.
Xunuo skillfully began to meditate, feeling the pressure in his Dantian grow more pronounced, yet it showed no signs of expanding.
He speculated that if the Dantian could not continue to expand, then the True Qi within must be reaching its limit.
It seemed this was the key to breaking through to the second layer of the Huayang Classic.
With this thought, he abandoned meditation and focused his energy on gathering True Qi.
After several days of practice, Xunuo sensed that the True Qi in his Dantian had reached a threshold.
He felt a tingling sensation in his Dantian, different from the previous discomfort associated with its expansion.
Though a bit anxious, he reminded himself that this was a breakthrough from a bottleneck and should be different from usual. Thus, he remained calm and continued to channel the Huayang Classic.
Sure enough, not long after, he felt a sudden release in his Dantian, and the sharp pain dissipated.
However, what followed was an intense sensation outside his Dantian, akin to being pierced by countless arrows; this pain was a hundred times worse than what he had felt inside.
Xunuo shuddered in pain, gritting his teeth to endure it.
Fortunately, the sharp pain did not last long, and its range was limited.
Once the sensation subsided, Xunuo calmed his mind and sensed that the True Qi within his Dantian had indeed become somewhat thinner.
It seemed that this method was effective, but the amount of True Qi produced was too sparse to fill his body.
The intense pain, akin to being pierced by countless arrows, was likely a side effect of expelling impurities from within.
Having determined the right direction, he decided to close his eyes and shut off his hearing and sense of smell, entering a meditative state once more.
This time, when the True Qi in his Dantian reached its full capacity, it automatically overflowed outward. The sharp pain in his Dantian vanished, as if it had connected with his body, allowing the True Qi to flow freely without obstruction.
However, the sharp pain outside of his Dantian began to expand slightly.
Gradually, Xunuo grasped some key points. When the True Qi was full, it would automatically overflow; when it was not full, he could sense it through his mind and slowly release it.
This way, he could allow the True Qi to flow steadily and continuously from his Dantian to various parts of his body.
There was no need for it to burst forth all at once as before, which had caused unbearable pain followed by a wait for it to fill up again.
Though this method seemed slow, it was actually a gradual process, and the pain had lessened significantly.
Once he grasped the key, everything became much simpler. Xunuo gathered True Qi in his Dantian while slowly allowing it to flow out, spreading throughout his body.
Although Xunuo had heard some knowledge about Meridians from Lu Duhou, he was not well-versed in it. He felt somewhat lost when it came to guiding True Qi through the Meridians.
Moreover, the Huayang Classic did not mention the need to circulate Qi along the Meridians; it only stated that True Qi filled the body.
Thus, Xunuo was not overly concerned and simply allowed the True Qi to flow along with his blood and bones.
Wherever the True Qi passed, some areas were unobstructed while others moved sluggishly, as if there were blockages, causing a sharp pain in those spots.
Gradually, Xunuo sensed that some of the True Qi had penetrated his body, as if something was spilling out.
He decided to ignore those areas and focused his mind on the circulation of True Qi where there were obstructions.
Time passed without him noticing, and Xunuo felt that the True Qi was now flowing freely within him, without any hindrances. He concluded his practice, opened his eyes, and released his awareness.
Suddenly, a pungent stench assaulted him.
Xunuo looked down and saw that his body was covered in a layer of thick, dark brown substance that emitted a foul odor.
He attempted to cover his nose with his hand, only to realize that his hands were also coated in this filth.
Without a second thought, he kicked open the tree hollow and crawled out.
Remembering the small river to the left, Xunuo dashed a few steps and plunged into the water.
The river was shallow, and these days, aside from traveling, Xunuo had been practicing diligently, rarely finding such a moment of relaxation. So, he decided to soak in the river and not come out.
Leaning back comfortably, he looked up and noticed a crescent moon in the sky. When he glanced around, it was as bright as day.
A sense of joy filled his heart. Although traveling at night had not posed any issues in recent days, he could see further and clearer than most.
Today, however, the night seemed no different from day. This must mean his vision had greatly improved. He wondered if there were other changes as well.
With that thought, he couldn't resist playing anymore. He leaped out of the river, landing effortlessly on the bank.
Turning back to look, Xunuo was startled; that leap had covered a distance of three or four yards.
He pondered to himself: with such changes, it seemed he had broken through the first layer of the Huayang Classic and entered the second layer.
It was time to attempt practicing the second layer.
With that in mind, he sat cross-legged by the riverbank, closed his eyes, and began to cultivate using the second layer of the Huayang Classic.
As he activated the second layer's cultivation method, Xunuo discovered something extraordinary. The flow of True Qi became vividly clear to him.
Previously, he could sense the True Qi within him, overflowing and even filling his body. But it was nowhere near as clear as it was now.
This piqued Xunuo's curiosity. As he operated the Cultivation Method, he guided his True Qi through his body, observing his internal organs, meridians, and bones with clarity.
There was a significant difference between the second layer of the Huayang Classic and the first.
The first layer focused on generating True Qi to expand the Dantian. The second layer, however, required refining the body with True Qi through Cleansing the Marrow and Changing the Sutras.
Xunuo watched as True Qi slowly emerged from the Dantian and flowed through his meridians.
Unfamiliar with the pathways, he chose not to interfere and let True Qi move freely.
He simply memorized the route taken by True Qi for future reference to check for any discrepancies.
True Qi circulated within him for several hours before finally returning to the Dantian.
During this journey, it had traversed his entire body with hardly any omissions.
Xunuo felt something unusual in his body. When he saw that True Qi had returned to the Dantian, he quickly ceased his practice.
Upon inspection, he noticed that some filth had been expelled from his body.
However, it was not as much as last time, and the odor was less foul, more subtle.
Xunuo hurriedly jumped into the river to cleanse himself.
At this moment, the sky was beginning to brighten. Xunuo, coming from a scholarly family, felt a sense of shame at her current appearance.
She hurriedly washed up and put on a clean outfit, then found a flat stone to sit on.
She pondered, "If I practice on the second level of the Huayang Classic, I always end up producing some Filth. That means I can't practice where there are people around."
Even she couldn't stand that foul stench; if others saw her, they would think she had just come out of a cesspool.
Moreover, she needed to find a place with a water source to practice, so she could wash off the Filth in time.
From her experiences over the past two visits, it seemed that the Filth she expelled was gradually decreasing. She thought that once the Filth was completely purged, the Cleansing the Marrow and Changing the Sutras would be successful.
It would be better to cultivate here for a few days until all the Filth was gone before continuing her journey.
Just as she was lost in thought, she felt a rumble in her stomach and realized she was hungry.
During these days of practicing, she had already consumed all her provisions.
Now, it had been several days since she last ate. Although she hadn't felt very hungry until now, expelling the impurities made her acutely aware of her hunger.
So she went to the forest by the river, picked some wild fruits, washed them in the water, and began to eat.
