Chapter Eighty-Two: Hold Me Tight
The battle flag of the Tang Empire lay torn and trampled on the ground, a shattered remnant of its former glory. The insignia of the Imperial Guard Headquarters was also not uncommon, indicating that they had suffered significant losses as well.
Countless corpses and pools of blood bore witness to the fierce battle that had taken place here, a testament to the brutality of the conflict.
Lin Feng searched among the numerous bodies, hoping to find a survivor to gather information. Fortunately, he soon discovered one. The man, clad in Low-Level Mystic Armor of the Tang Empire, was barely alive, unable to even open his eyes. His Xuanjia was incomplete, and he bore several gruesome wounds, his body pierced by demonic weapons and bleeding profusely.
Mo Mo immediately activated her Holy Art, channeling her mental energy into the man's body. Miraculously, he managed to open his eyes.
Lin Feng held him tightly, urgency in his voice as he asked, "Brother, wake up and tell me what happened!"
Seeing a human general before him in his final moments brought a sense of familiarity to the man. He struggled to speak, "We... were besieged by the demons... fought with all our might... General Wu came to help... but... but we never expected... General Wu betrayed us..."
"That bastard..." Lin Feng gritted his teeth and quickly inquired, "Where is the General? Which direction did he go?"
With great difficulty, the brother extended his right hand, trembling as he pointed southwest.
"Are you sure it's that way?" Lin Feng asked again. Mo Mo's mental energy was weak now; she could no longer sense Tang Jiner's location. It was crucial to confirm the direction.
The brother nodded slightly, seemingly exhausting all his strength with those words and gestures. His hand fell limply, and his eyes closed for the last time.
"Brother, may you rest in peace."
Lin Feng murmured sorrowfully as he solemnly laid down the man's body. Then he turned and sprinted toward the southwest. Along the way, he saw countless corpses and blood—some belonging to demons, others to the Tang Empire.
All of this signaled that his goal lay ahead.
Lin Feng ran wildly through the Snowstorm, as if driven mad. After two hours, he finally sensed a dark mass of figures ahead and heard the sounds of fierce battle.
He stopped his pursuit and forced himself to calm down. He spread out his powerful Divine Consciousness to search for any information about Tang Jiner.
The sounds of the two armies clashing, the neighing of warhorses, the impact of Xuanjia, the shouts of the demon race, the fearful cries from the Tang Empire, and the howling of the cold snow filled Lin Feng's Sea of Consciousness. The cacophony threatened to overwhelm him, causing his head to throb painfully. He gritted his teeth and endured, sifting through the chaos for anything related to Tang Jiner.
"The voice of War Maniac..."
Lin Feng suddenly jolted. He had caught a fleeting glimpse of War Maniac's voice. Though it was just a moment, he was certain. The voice vanished as quickly as it had appeared, lost in War Maniac's constant movement.
"You bastard, I will definitely kill you."
Lin Feng began to run again, determined to track down War Maniac's triumphant roars. Soon enough, he caught it again, and this time he did not let it slip away. He followed the sound of War Maniac's voice and soon spotted Tang Jiner.
About ten Imperial Guard Headquarters Armored Soldiers were desperately surrounding Tang Jiner. None of these Armored Soldiers had intact Xuanjia. With each attack from War Maniac, one by one, they fell.
"General, stop letting your men die for nothing. Hand over my testimony, and I, War Maniac, will let you live."
"Do you think I would still believe you? I truly regret not listening to Lin Feng back then and killing you on the spot."
Tang Jiner wore Golden Armor that appeared to be of a high grade, surpassing High-Level Battle Armor. However, her Golden Armor was also heavily damaged. Her face was pale, her figure swaying unsteadily as she gripped her longsword and coldly glared at War Maniac.
With another strike from War Maniac, the last Xuanjia guard beside Tang Jiner fell. She was left all alone. War Maniac approached step by step, dragging his golden blade closer.
"Stupid woman, you don't know how to appreciate a gift. If you don't obediently hand it over, I have a hundred ways to make you regret it."
The War Maniac had already approached Tang Jiner, who immediately swung her sword in an attempt to strike. The War Maniac easily deflected it and retaliated with a punch, knocking Tang Jiner to the ground. He then stepped on her face.
He spat on her, his voice dripping with malice. "You filthy girl, if you don't hand it over soon, I'll strip you of your clothes and toss you to the Demon Army. I bet they'll be here any moment now. But before I give you to them, I'll have my fun first."
At that moment, Mo Mo launched a psychic attack. However, her power was weak and only managed to stun the War Maniac for a brief instant. That moment was enough for Lin Feng.
Lin Feng leaped into action, delivering a powerful kick to the War Maniac and then unleashing a flurry of fierce attacks. His hands moved at incredible speed with the Moon City Sword, slicing through the War Maniac's Xuanjia armor and leaving countless wounds.
In close combat, the War Maniac was already a defeated foe against Lin Feng. Having taken a psychic hit first, he lost his advantage and had no strength left to fight back.
Lin Feng seized the opportunity, not giving the War Maniac any chance to breathe. Although he couldn't use powerful Divine Abilities like the Manifestation of Divine Powers, his cultivation was fully concentrated in his hands during close combat, combined with his terrifying physical strength—he had few rivals.
The Moon City Sword gradually broke through the War Maniac's Xuanjia armor, causing pieces to fall away. Without the protection of his armor, Lin Feng continued his relentless assault on the War Maniac's body.
The General's Camp was embroiled in fierce battle against the Demon Army. Tang Jiner fled under the protection of Imperial Guard Armored Soldiers while the War Maniac and the First Demon Disciple led their forces to intercept her.
In the end, Tang Jiner could only break through with a small squad, carving out a bloody path for her escape. Seeing that this squad consisted of only about ten remnants, the War Maniac decided to pursue them alone, leaving Breaking Cloud Camp behind to attack the General's Camp from the rear.
Being known as the Daughter of the Murderous Emperor was not something to boast about; thus, the War Maniac remained cautious.
However, he now regretted leaving Breaking Cloud Camp behind. With no one to assist him if ambushed now, he felt even more frustrated that he hadn't even seen his opponent's face clearly yet.
Ahhh...
The Moon City Sword struck War Maniac, slicing through his body and even severing his bones. War Maniac let out a painful scream; his physical form had been utterly destroyed.
Finally, Lin Feng stomped down hard, pinning War Maniac to the ground.
At that moment, War Maniac caught sight of Lin Feng's face. He vaguely recognized him. This fierce assault was all too familiar, a nightmare that haunted him throughout his life.
"How is it you again?" War Maniac roared in frustration and anger. Throughout his brutal and bloody life, he had killed countless people, instilling fear in others. But since encountering Lin Feng, he had met his nemesis—someone who struck terror deep within him.
Even at night, he would awaken in fright from dreams of being hunted by Lin Feng.
"Die."
Lin Feng said little more; he no longer wished to give this scoundrel any chance of survival. With a swift motion of his sword, he severed War Maniac's head. Of course, the Essence Blood of a Fate strongman could not go to waste; he collected it and tossed it into the Ancient Cauldron, along with War Maniac's storage bag.
Finally having killed War Maniac, Lin Feng let out a long breath. He then hurried over to Tang Jiner, kneeling on one knee before her. "I apologize for arriving late to your aid, my lord."
Tang Jiner looked at Lin Feng, her eyes flickering with light and shadow, her presence barely perceptible. At that moment, she felt no pain or fear; she was remarkably calm. Tears glistened at the corners of her eyes.
"Lin, you came... It's so good to see you before I die."
"My lord, are you alright?" Lin Feng sensed something was off with Tang Jiner and couldn't help but ask.
"I am already dead, clinging to life by a secret method, waiting for you. I knew you would come."
"My lord..."
“Li, I don't have much time. Listen to me. The confession of War Maniac is hidden in the secret compartment under the desk in my study. Take it to my father, the emperor. Even if we can't convict Jiang Wannian, it will at least make things difficult for him.”
“Li, do you know? Unknowingly, I’ve realized that I…”
Tang Jiner's voice grew weaker, almost inaudible by the end. Her entire being was so frail, it was as if she were on the brink of death.
Lin Feng quickly held her close, his heart aching. “My lady, please wake up! My lady, hold on a little longer. I promise I can get you out of here alive.”
Tang Jiner's breath flickered like a candle flame, and her closed eyes opened once more. She looked at Lin Feng and revealed a sorrowful smile.
“Fool, hold me tight. I'm so cold…”
Those words were so light, lighter than a snowflake, yet Lin Feng heard them. After that statement, Tang Jiner's body suddenly lost all warmth. Her hands fell limply to her sides.
