"What's going on?" Lin Lingsu asked, grabbing a disciple who was running by.
The disciple's face turned pale upon seeing Lin Lingsu. It was only then that she realized her face was covered in blood, truly terrifying like an Evil Spirit. Once the disciple recognized Lin Lingsu's appearance, he stammered, "Chairman... just now..." He pointed around nervously, "Look... there are... ghosts..." He swallowed hard, unable to meet Lin Lingsu's gaze.
"Nonsense!" Lin Lingsu exclaimed. "You are all cultivators; how can you be afraid of such filthy things? Now go and call someone to remove those things immediately!"
"Yes." Seeing that Lin Lingsu seemed genuinely angry, the disciple hurriedly ran off.
"Damn it!" The words of Li Xin before his death and this sudden turn of events only fueled Lin Lingsu's already extreme frustration. She slammed her hand against the door frame and let out a rare curse.
On a hill not far from Dragon Tiger Mountain, two figures, one tall and one short, were elongated by the moonlight. They quietly watched the hurried disciples of Dragon Tiger Mountain below.
"Spirit, you really know how to stir things up. Look at what you've done to those people down there," Wei Ning said with a wry smile as he glanced at the grinning Liu Linglang beside him.
"Hehe, it's so much fun! Look how anxious they are! I just played a little trick, and their joyous occasion turned into a funeral. Isn't it amusing? Wei Ning, am I impressive or what?" Liu Linglang said cheerfully, looking up at Wei Ning as if waiting for his praise.
Wei Ning couldn't help but laugh at this quirky child. "Impressive, impressive; you have the most tricks up your sleeve."
"Of course!" Liu Linglang replied proudly. "Wei Ning, should we go down and scare these arrogant Taoists? What do you think?"
"Forget it; they've had enough trouble as it is. Spirit, let's head back..."
"Oh." Liu Linglang clearly wasn't done having fun and responded reluctantly.
"Sigh," Wei Ning thought to himself as he let it go. Yet he still found himself inexplicably drawn to Dragon Tiger Mountain. Tonight was supposed to be his wedding night with that person; perhaps without Spirit's antics, it would have been joyful. No matter how harshly she had treated him in the past, that was all behind them now. From this moment on, she was someone else's wife, and he had no connection with her anymore.
To meet again would mean enmity.
That was what Lin Lingsu had told him years ago. He remembered it well.
"Let's go," Wei Ning said as he took Liu Linglang's hand and left Dragon Tiger Mountain.
“Where are we going?” Liu Linglang asked.
“Let’s go see the master first.”
“Ah, do we have to go see that ugly creature with eight heads? No way…” Liu Linglang shook her head vigorously.
“Alright, stop messing around,” Wei Ning said, patting Liu Linglang on the head. The two of them disappeared into the night.
The autumn night was deep, occasionally interrupted by a few birds breaking the tranquility of the sky. Wei Ning didn’t look back as he held Liu Linglang’s hand, slowly making their way down the quiet road. He had experienced too many joys and sorrows on this mountain; Lin Father’s lonely grave still stood, and Lin Lingsu’s words echoed in his ears, as if nothing had changed in a thousand years.
Such prosperity, yet such desolation.
Three days later, Wei Ning arrived at Wang Tuozi’s fortune-telling spot. To his surprise, Wang Tuozi was wearing a fake beard, calling out for business while keeping a wary eye on his surroundings.
“Master, what’s going on?” Wei Ning asked curiously. This master was quite the character.
“Shh,” Wang Tuozi glanced around suspiciously, quickly tidying up his stall. He pretended not to know Wei Ning as they walked away from each other until they reached a secluded spot. Then Wang Tuozi turned back and hit Wei Ning lightly with his folding fortune-telling stool, glaring at him. “Are you tired of living? Do you know we’re now wanted criminals by Zhu You? If they catch wind of us, we’ll all be done for! Look at you; you didn’t even put on some makeup. At least buy a cheap fake beard like mine! I have a wig back home; wear it before you go out again, or I’ll make you regret it.”
“Is it really that serious?” Wei Ning chuckled, unconvinced.
“Of course it is! If Zhu You’s gang gets hold of us, what will we do? Fight? Run away? Those guys are like sticky plaster; once they latch onto you, you can’t shake them off. I’m not looking for trouble.”
Wei Ning couldn’t help but laugh at this precious master. Back at the Corpse Driving Conference, he had faced Zhu You’s entire crew without flinching, exuding an air of confidence like a deity. Now he was acting like a mouse avoiding a cat, constantly on guard against Zhu You Practitioners. It was truly amusing.
“If you really don’t want to get entangled with them, just hide out and don’t do any business…”
“Shut up!” Wei Ning hadn’t finished speaking when he received another light smack on the head. “If I don’t do business, how will I eat? Seriously, you don’t know how expensive things are until you’re in charge. You’ll starve to death,” Wang Tuozi retorted angrily.
Wei Ning waved his hand dismissively and smiled wryly. She knew that no matter how he acted now, Wang Tuozi had a point; the best course of action was to keep quiet.
“Alright then, take this.” Wang Tuozi tossed all his fortune-telling tools into Wei Ning's hands and said, “Since you’re here now, I won’t have to look for you anymore. Let’s go somewhere together in a few days.”
"Where are we going?"
"Fengmen Valley."
Wei Ning was taken aback and exclaimed, "What do you want to go there for?"
Wang Tuozi replied impatiently, "Stop asking so many questions. Are you afraid others won't hear you or something? You'll find out soon enough."
"Is it related to the Hell's Key you're trying to seize?" Wei Ning asked.
Wang Tuozi felt a jolt of surprise. In the past, when he worked with Wei Ning, Wei Ning only focused on doing things, and Wang Tuozi rarely explained himself. But now, Wei Ning had started to ask questions, indicating that he was maturing, beginning to think independently, and developing his own sense of right and wrong.
Wei Ning knew Wang Tuozi's character well. After spending so much time together, he understood that while Wang Tuozi appeared carefree and disorganized on the surface, he was actually meticulous and deep-minded. Every action he took had a reason and a plan behind it. The risk of opposing the entire Zhu You for the sake of seizing this key surely stemmed from a compelling reason he couldn't refuse.
Fengmen Valley might sound unfamiliar, but within the Taoist Sect, it was a name known by all.
Because it also had a more familiar name: Jiaozuo.
