"Sister..." the Fake Phoenix Woman suddenly lowered her head, seemingly terrified of the woman before her, instinctively leaning behind Wei Ning. She appeared to be quite apprehensive of this woman.
"Qing..." The woman slowly awakened, glancing at the timid Fake Phoenix Woman and calling out her true name. From the lips of this false Phoenix Maiden, Wei Ning had already deduced that this woman was the real deal.
The Phoenix Maiden spoke coldly, "Are you still unwilling to take off your human skin mask?"
Qing kept her head down, not daring to look at the Phoenix Maiden. Hesitantly, she removed the mask from her face. It was only then that Wei Ning could see her true form; Qing was merely a girl of about twelve or thirteen, with delicate features and a certain charm. However, Wei Ning could hardly fathom that such a lively girl could commit such horrific acts. Yet, considering where she came from, it was no surprise; her worldview and values were naturally different from those of people in civilized society, and one could not judge her by normal standards.
The Phoenix Maiden cast another glance at Qing, her tone laced with reproach: "And there's more."
"Oh." In front of the Phoenix Maiden, Qing resembled a child who had done something wrong, refusing to lift her head. She quickly pulled out two water bags from her pocket and placed them on the table before standing straight again, staring at her toes.
It turned out... Wei Ning couldn't help but chuckle softly, admiring this quirky girl for her cleverness.
"Sigh," the Phoenix Maiden sighed and pointed at the remaining dozen or so God of Joy corpses. "Is all of this your doing?"
Qing shot a quick glance at Wei Ning and nudged him lightly, clearly hoping he would speak up for her—ideally taking the blame himself. Wei Ning merely smiled silently at her, which made Qing's mouth twitch in frustration as she likely cursed his female relatives in her mind.
"Sigh, child, you must bear some responsibility for this," the Phoenix Maiden said sternly, though there was a hint of warmth in her words. It seemed she did not regard the Fake Phoenix Woman as an enemy.
Suddenly, Qing knelt at the feet of the Phoenix Maiden and cried out, "Sister, I was wrong! I won't dare do it again! I just thought it would be fun; I never meant to harm them! I heard you were attending some Corpse Driving Conference and was just curious to join in on the excitement. I planned to apologize to you after the Corpse Driving Conference ended! Sister, I'm sorry! Please don't kill me! Don't kill me..."
"Sigh..." The Phoenix Maiden let out a deep sigh. "When I kept you by my side all those years ago, I feared your impulses might lead you to do something harmful. I never expected you would even think of harming me. If I were to let you remain in this world any longer, who knows how many more lives would be lost because of you..."
Qingyi seemed to have developed a murderous intent after hearing Phoenix Maiden's words. She quickly knelt at Phoenix Maiden's feet, repeatedly bowing her head and pleading, "Sister, I know I was wrong, I know I was wrong! I really haven't done anything bad. Please spare me! I promise to quit my addiction from now on. If I ever offend again, you can do whatever you want with me—kill me or cut me up. But I truly haven't done anything wrong today, I really haven't..." She then shook Wei Ning's leg and said, "Brother, hero, idol, you help me too! Did I really do anything wrong today? I even saved someone; it was me who saved this child..."
Wei Ning actually understood that when she wanted to eat that child, she had struggled greatly within herself. Moreover, after the girl had plotted against Phoenix Maiden, she hadn't killed her but merely made her faint with Zombie powder. This showed that the girl wasn't entirely wicked; her conscience hadn't completely vanished. However, if she were allowed to remain in the world, she would always be a ticking time bomb! Just like those addicted to drugs—once the craving hit, they wouldn't even recognize their own parents. No one could guarantee that she wouldn't steal a child to eat.
Wei Ning knew that this matter was now a family issue for Phoenix Maiden. He decided to observe how she would handle it before intervening.
Only then did Phoenix Maiden seem to notice Wei Ning's presence. She nodded at him and said, "You must be the one who saved me earlier. May I ask your name?"
"Chen Prefecture Wei Ning. It was just a coincidence; it was no trouble at all," he replied modestly. "But this child is truly..."
Wei Ning frowned as he glanced at Qingyi, who immediately felt her heart racing, fearing that Wei Ning would expose her misdeeds.
"Chen Prefecture Wei Family?" Phoenix Maiden exclaimed in surprise and asked with a frown, "Is it the same Wei Family as the Corpse Driver?"
Wei Ning nodded.
Phoenix Maiden's expression relaxed as she said, "That makes sense. This girl is quite cunning; ordinary men would surely fall for her tricks. But this time she encountered a man from your Wei Family, so clearly her schemes are insignificant."
Wei Ning caught the underlying meaning in Phoenix Maiden's words and felt his face flush slightly. "It was just a coincidence. However, if this girl hadn't crossed paths with me, she would have committed a grave crime today. Since you are her sister, you should discipline her more."
Phoenix Maiden replied, "Actually, I'm only a nominal sister; we aren't blood-related. Last year, I took her in because I felt sorry for her—she was alone and helpless. Later on, I gradually discovered her... peculiar eating habits. So I had no choice but to keep her close in hopes of helping her overcome her addiction. Who would have thought that just a few days ago she poisoned my water? If she had truly committed a serious crime, as her sister, I would have been beyond redemption. Today I'm really grateful to you; otherwise... Qingyi, you decide what to do!"
With that, Phoenix Maiden turned sharply towards Qingyi.
"Woo woo! I want to go back! I want to go back..." Qingyi threw a tantrum and sat down on the ground, refusing to get up while crying loudly.
Wei Ning said, "This child has a rather venomous heart; if she's not strictly supervised in the future, something bad will definitely happen. I suggest..."
Hearing the harsh tone in Wei Ning's voice made Qingyi burst into tears again as she pointed at one of the God of Joy corpses and exclaimed, "This person abandoned his woman after starting an affair and has been cheating everywhere! Is it wrong for me to punish him? This person is a big bad guy—he lends money at high interest rates and even killed an old lady! And this one—this one is from the national football team; he guards the ball like Henry! This one... this one..." Qingyi pointed at each of the ten or so God of Joy corpses and recounted their crimes one by one. From her tone, it seemed that each of these individuals was guilty of heinous acts; she believed herself to be a great hero delivering justice by punishing evil and protecting the good. Puffing out her chest—though lacking two water bags—her momentum diminished significantly: "If this is considered doing something bad, then go ahead and kill me! I'd die without regrets."
