The image in the mirror abruptly froze, and at that moment, the Phoenix Maiden seemed to awaken as well. She adjusted her disheveled clothes and hair, glanced at Wei Ning, and said, "What? Haven't you seen your aunt throw a fit before?"
Before Wei Ning could respond, she burst into laughter.
"Alright, it's getting late. I have to head back..."
Wu Ma was taken aback. "That's it? My grandson..."
The Phoenix Maiden took the child and pinched him hard on the arm, causing him to wail.
"He's crying! He's crying!" Wu Ma exclaimed with delight, taking the child in his arms and calling out loudly, "Mother of the Child, my Dog Boy is crying! Come and see!"
The child's cries had already attracted everyone in the house waiting for news. As soon as they heard the baby cry, everyone rushed over, filling the room with laughter. Only the oblivious child continued to wail.
The Phoenix Maiden handed a stack of paper cuttings to Wu Ma and said, "There are thirteen pieces of paper here. Each one should be soaked in sugar water. Once they're all wet, take them out and drink the water. Remember to take it every night at eight o'clock sharp. After taking it, don't go outside again; it's best not to leave after dark! If anything happens to this child again, I can't guarantee what will happen."
Wei Ning examined one of the paper cuttings closely; it resembled a person kneeling on the ground. However, upon closer inspection, it looked like nothing at all—just a feeling that was hard to describe. Each piece was about three centimeters long, and there were a total of thirty pieces.
Wu Ma was immensely grateful and brought out a thick red envelope from inside the house to give to the Phoenix Maiden. She weighed it in her hands briefly before tucking it away into her clothing. Turning to Wei Ning, she said, "So? Think my methods are effective?"
With a toss of her head, she stepped outside to her motorcycle and turned back to Wei Ning. "Get in; come with me to get my teeth checked."
At that moment, Wei Ning felt uneasy because after the Phoenix Maiden had summoned the child's spirit, although he seemed to have returned, it felt like the evil energy surrounding him had intensified. What exactly had the Phoenix Maiden done to this child? Or had he picked up this evil energy during his time with the ghost after losing his soul?
Regardless of Wei Ning's thoughts, the child's return was now a reality. The loud revving of the motorcycle outside urged him not to dwell on it any longer. He hopped onto the bike and followed the Phoenix Maiden once more into a high-speed adventure of life and death.
Upon arriving at the Dental Hospital, Phoenix Maiden exclaimed, "Is my potion ready? I need to get back before nightfall. Don't delay my important matters!"
"It’s been ready for a while, just waiting for you to return. If you take any longer, we might as well be closing up," Dr. Yang replied with a smile.
Phoenix Maiden pulled out two red bills from the red envelope she had just received and handed them to Dr. Yang, grinning, "Dr. Yang, make sure you do a good job. I want to see if your skills have improved."
Dr. Yang accepted the money, his face lighting up like a blooming flower as he said, "Where could I go wrong? Even without cleaning, your teeth are as white as jade, enviable by all. Any girl with teeth like yours would be smiling in her sleep."
Phoenix Maiden looked at her reflection in the mirror, clearly pleased by Dr. Yang's words. She chuckled, "Dr. Yang, your words are so sweet! Be careful; if I get too happy, I might just smile my teeth away! Let’s see how Young Man handles that."
Dr. Yang quickly nodded in agreement while preparing the dental tools. Naturally, Phoenix Maiden was in the treatment room getting her teeth cleaned, but Wei Ning was feeling bored outside and decided to listen in on the two doctors who were chatting idly about Phoenix Maiden.
"This Fairy Lady isn’t just any con artist from the streets; she really has some skills. I've heard she's quite impressive and has the biggest reputation around here—she can cure all sorts of bizarre ailments," one doctor remarked.
"That's true," the other doctor added. "But her fees are exorbitant; ordinary people can't afford her."
"You're mistaken there; what's more important—money or life? Compared to those doctors in the Provincial Capital, her fees are relatively low. Besides, if you had her skills, you'd probably charge even more! Look, this Fairy Lady needs to eat too! In this market economy, everything revolves around money! There are no real immortals out there."
Hearing their enthusiasm, Wei Ning interjected, "So you all are this superstitious about her?"
"We weren't at first," one doctor admitted. "But her abilities are so remarkable that you can't help but believe it. Remember Old Zhang's family? It was said that a whole bunch of ghosts were causing chaos—like a hundred ghosts parading through Yuanling City! No one dared to step outside for six months! Then Fairy Lady showed up and simply blew a breath and said, 'You ghosts! What are you doing here? Get lost! If you don't leave now, I'll scatter you all!' And just like that, none of the ghosts dared to show themselves again—they all vanished immediately." The doctor animatedly mimicked Phoenix Maiden's tone and demeanor as if he had witnessed it himself.
Wei Ning found it amusing and thought to himself that this guy should have been a performer instead of a dentist; he was truly underappreciated.
Just then, another doctor came out from the inner room and asked, "Zhou, how much did you charge for that tooth replacement last time?"
"Check the second drawer in the back room; you should find it there. I always put it there," Zhou replied impatiently. He still needed the Phoenix Maiden's powers, but the doctor said, "I can't find it. I've looked carefully, and it's really not there."
"There’s nothing difficult in this world, just people who are slow-witted!" Zhou muttered under his breath, feeling his enthusiasm wane. He reluctantly went inside. "It's not here."
"Where?"
"This is strange; I clearly left it here. Who would take this thing?"
"I find it odd too. It seems like every time the Fairy Lady comes, this old tooth disappears. It's really strange."
Wei Ning listened to their conversation from outside, and something stirred in her heart.
