Half of Qiqi's face was covered by a mask, yet the exposed side was completely different. Beneath the mask, her skin was infested with repulsive insects that crawled slowly from her hair, gnawing at the flesh of her face. In some places, the bone was already visible, illuminated by the dim light, creating a horrifying sight. Even though Wei Ning had encountered many monsters and demons over the years, he couldn't help but gasp at the sight of that half of Qiqi's face.
The strange illusion from Yunmeng suddenly flashed in Wei Ning's mind; Qiqi's face back then looked exactly like it did now.
"Ghost!" Wei Ning exclaimed, his mind going blank.
His scream clearly startled Qiqi, causing her to tremble all over, her fingertips turning white. When she looked at him, Wei Ning felt an inexplicable chill wash over him.
Qiqi fell silent, and this silence was more painful than any harsh curse could be. At that moment, regret consumed Wei Ning; he realized how deeply his thoughtless words had hurt this proud girl. He wanted to apologize but knew that doing so now would only add salt to her wounds or cut deeper.
The atmosphere had dropped to freezing point. Wei Ning tried to express his remorse towards Qiqi, forcing himself to meet her gaze. However, every time he glanced at her, nausea churned in his stomach.
"You are good," Qiqi said softly. "I don't blame you."
Deep inside Wei Ning's heart, something stirred unexpectedly, twisting like a damp towel ready to drip water, leaving him unsure of how to respond to Qiqi.
"I'm leaving," Qiqi said after another moment of silence.
"Wait." Suddenly realizing his identity, Wei Ning remembered that he was now her husband and she was his wife.
They had exchanged vows and shared drinks; to others, this was their priceless moment.
Where could she go?
Insects crawled slowly from Qiqi's head, covering her entire body and continuously gnawing at her flesh. She made no attempt to hide it as she stood before Wei Ning, watching as the insects devoured half of her face. With a sorrowful smile, she said, "Peng Bai can control my Curse Poison for now, but he still can't cure it completely. I don't know if I will ever get better. I know I don't deserve you."
"Wait." Wei Ning called out to Qiqi.
Qiqi paused for a moment; she felt her heart racing but didn't turn around. Instead, she maintained her calm demeanor as best as she could and replied, "What is it?"
Wei Ning remained silent.
One step, two steps, three steps—Qiqi moved forward deliberately slow. With each step, it felt as if the ground were pulling her down; it was exhausting. She hoped someone would call out to her.
But Wei Ning remained silent. With each passing moment, Qiqi's heart sank further; she felt as if she were trapped in an ice cellar, shivering uncontrollably. If only Wei Ning would call out to her now, she would stop and stay by his side forever, accompanying him through the rest of his days and leaving hope for him and the Wei Family.
But Wei Ning did not.
In truth, Wei Ning desperately wanted to call out to Qiqi, but the terrifying half of her face and the countless nightmares that had haunted him, waking him from his sleep, clung to him like an invisible hand, choking his throat and sealing his lips. Wei Ning's face turned pale, his lips moved continuously, as if he were a clay statue, overwhelmed by a heavy sense of oppression that rendered him utterly voiceless.
He had no courage.
Truly no courage.
Not in front of such a woman.
Nor did he have the courage to face another woman.
Qiqi felt despair wash over her, tears streaming down her face, but unfortunately, with her back turned to Wei Ning, he could not see.
She stamped her foot, finally making a decision. Suddenly, she quickened her pace and rushed out. Wei Ning clutched the bedsheet tightly, his nails digging into his flesh until he nearly drew blood. It was only when Qiqi slammed the door behind her that the loud noise jolted Wei Ning awake, as if he had just come to his senses.
After a long while—
“Wei Ning, you are such a bastard!”
Wei Ning slapped himself hard across the face, feeling utterly drained as he collapsed onto the bed.
The moonlight poured in like water, quietly illuminating the Wei Family Courtyard, casting a layer of silvery gray over the festive decorations of this rural home, seemingly imbued with an inexplicable chill.
It seemed even the moon sighed for this ill-fated couple.
Not far away, two pairs of eyes waited silently in Wei Ning's room, observing everything that had just transpired.
Only after Qiqi stormed out did one voice softly sigh and ask, “Is this the result you wanted?”
Another person replied with a bitter smile, “I didn't expect Peng Bai still hadn't cured Qiqi; it seems we underestimated Wei Xian Gui.”
“Was it Wei Xian Gui who placed the curse on Qiqi?”
The man let out a bitter laugh. "In this world, who besides Wei Xian Gui, that madman, could create a Curse Poison that even Peng Bai cannot lift?"
One person remained silent for a long time before asking, "Father, have you found him?"
"I went to the Blood Corpse Cave where Wei Xian Gui has sealed himself, but he has already awakened and has no idea where he went. I have been chasing him for so many years, yet there is still no news."
"Father, you must find that old monster as soon as possible, or else Wei Ning..." the other person urged anxiously.
"Isn't there still a few years left?" The man took a deep breath and said, "If Wei Xian Gui were that easy to deal with, Peng Bai would have taken his life long ago. However—Peng Bai is still somewhat reasonable; the enemy of my enemy is my friend. Anyone who wants to deal with Wei Xian Gui is his comrade. Ha ha, I've suffered enough under Wei Xian Gui's pressure."
"I went to the site of the century-old evil formation set by Wei Xian Gui, and it was all burned down in one go. Ha ha, Wei Xian Gui, you never expected that your elaborate schemes would be undone by your own descendants, did you? All those decades of effort wasted. Ha ha." The man's voice turned sinister and sorrowful. "Back in the day, the insane things you did to my mother—perhaps you never thought it would come to this. It's time to settle the score." With that, he closed his eyes, tears welling up.
The other person quietly watched him without speaking.
After a while, he slowly asked, "Father, do you have confidence?"
The man sighed deeply and replied, "Plans are made by people; success depends on fate. I'll leave now and take good care of Wei Ning."
"Can't we use the Wei Family's shadows? As long as they are willing to act, killing Wei Xian Gui should be feasible. Didn't our ancestors leave behind the shadows of the Wei Family precisely for dealing with Wei Xian Gui in the future?"
"It's not that we can't; it's that it's impossible."
