At that moment, the ancient figures vanished like wisps of blue smoke around Wei Ning and Lin Lingsu.
The square had calmed down, leaving only Wei Ning, Lin Lingsu, and the middle-aged man.
Lin Lingsu took a deep breath and said, "Three-Legged Golden Crow."
The middle-aged man nodded. "Not bad. You two have managed to overcome your inner demons and arrive in my Yunmeng illusion."
Wei Ning frowned. "Do we know each other?"
"Do you remember the time in Ghost Valley when you chopped down that tree inscribed with the Seven Kill Stele Inscription?"
Wei Ning nodded. He recalled how he had risked everything to save Lin Lingsu by using the Five Thunder Palm, only to realize later that it had all been a trap set by Lin Lingsu. He had been ambushed and lost an eye in the process. A bitter smile crept onto his lips at the thought.
"I was trapped inside that tree for several hundred years. If you hadn't accidentally knocked it down, I might never have seen the light of day again. So, you are my benefactor, and I should thank you."
Wei Ning was already in a daze back then but vaguely remembered seeing a golden bird soar up when he approached the tree. He hadn't expected that it would turn out to be this Three-Legged Golden Crow before him.
"I had already predicted you would come here and knew why you did. Since you saved my life, it is only natural for me to offer you an eye in return."
Hearing that he was willing to give him an eye filled Wei Ning with joy, but then the Three-Legged Golden Crow changed its tone. "However, if I lose an eye, it will take me ten years to recover it. Therefore, I must take ten years of lifespan from one of you. Are you willing?"
"I am willing. As long as it can heal my eye, I will give it to you."
The Three-Legged Golden Crow shook its head lightly with a faint smile. "I am a manifestation of solar essence, and you are of pure Yang; Yin and Yang clash—it cannot be done."
Its gaze turned toward Lin Lingsu.
Lin Lingsu bit her lip, lowered her head in contemplation for a while, then slowly raised her head to stare at the Three-Legged Golden Crow. She spoke each word deliberately: "I will give it to you, but you'd better not deceive me."
"No," Wei Ning quickly interjected.
Lin Lingsu said coldly, "I have never liked owing anyone anything. I owe you an eye, and now I return it to you. From now on, I will owe you nothing."
The Three-Legged Golden Crow chuckled, "Indeed, back in Ghost Valley, I sensed that someone had placed a curse on you, sealing all Six Senses. Yet it seemed you always wanted to break free and restore your Six Senses. It must have been a painful struggle."
As soon as the Three-Legged Golden Crow spoke, Wei Ning's body trembled violently, and he cried out, "Why didn't you tell me? Why?"
It turned out that what he had hated most was not Lin Lingsu's failure that led to the loss of his eye, but rather that when he fought desperately for her, she remained completely still, allowing him to fight and kill for her. He had misunderstood her all along; she hadn't wanted to help him—she had been sealed and unable to move her eyes, ears, nose, tongue, body, or mind. Just moments ago, he had almost attacked her.
Lin Lingsu snorted coldly and turned her face away.
"Alright, I will take ten years of your Lifespan in exchange for your eye. A fair trade, no deception involved."
"Wait." Wei Ning suddenly smiled sadly and said, "I don't want the eye anymore. Sometimes having two eyes doesn't mean one can see everything clearly. What use is it?"
"This is a transaction between him and me; what does it have to do with you?" Lin Lingsu replied coldly.
Wei Ning interrupted, "Even if you obtained the eye, I wouldn't want it."
Lin Lingsu stamped her foot in frustration. "You... how could you... how could you..."
Wei Ning turned to the Three-Legged Golden Crow and bowed. "Senior, thank you for your kindness. I do not want the Yin-Yang Eye anymore. I will take my leave now; perhaps we will meet again."
The Three-Legged Golden Crow smiled mysteriously and said, "Many have gone to great lengths and lost their lives to obtain my pair of eyes. Now such a wonderful opportunity is right in front of you, yet you refuse it. Do you even know the benefits of this eye?"
Wei Ning thought to himself: "If it means trading a girl's ten years of life for it, even if it's a divine object, I wouldn't want it."
"Hold on." Lin Lingsu said, "The Three-Legged Golden Crow's eyes possess the ability to see through everything. If he doesn't want it, then I do. It's worth trading my ten years of Lifespan for it."
"What are you planning? You're not..."
Lin Lingsu replied coldly, "Once I have the Yin-Yang Eye, I will qualify to unravel the mysteries of ***, which means I will have a better chance of killing your master."
Wei Ning said with a hoarse voice, "Can you really not let it go? What grudge do you have against my master that cannot be resolved?"
Lin Lingsu's eyes filled with hatred as she gritted her teeth and replied, "That demon Wang Chuyi killed all my kin—men, women, and children—in one night. My family has endured for nearly a century to avenge this villain. Will we let him go? Even if I cannot take revenge myself, the Lin family will ensure that one day he pays for his blood debts."
Wei Ning had no idea that his beloved master was capable of such evil. He took three steps back and shouted, "Impossible! No way! My master is not that kind of person!"
Lin Lingsu snorted coldly, "Whether he is or not, you can go back and ask that old villain himself if he admits it."
The Three-Legged Golden Crow waved his hand and said, "Have you two finished arguing? If you're done, then go back. If you don't return soon, you might never get the chance again."
Suddenly, Wei Ning remembered something and asked, "Qiqi... where is Qiqi?"
The Three-Legged Golden Crow replied, "That girl is still in my illusion. Don't worry; she is your friend and therefore my friend as well. I won't make things difficult for her—by the way, do you remember the dreams you had when you entered my illusion?"
"What about them?"
The Three-Legged Golden Crow's expression turned enigmatic as he slowly said, "Those were not dreams; they were your future."
With that, the Three-Legged Golden Crow pushed Wei Ning lightly. Wei Ning felt the ground begin to spin beneath him, the scenery around him shifting as if it were just beginning again, and then everything went dark before his eyes.
