Peng San Po paused for a moment and continued, "It's all my fault. I know that killing is inherently evil. As cultivators, we should understand this deeply. Who would have thought that I was blinded by greed at that time? Alas, retribution, retribution."
In an instant, he seemed to age ten years as he said, "If Yuer had died at another time, it wouldn't have mattered much; it would just be one life in the cycle of reincarnation. But he died on New Year's Eve..."
"New Year's Eve?" Wei Ning exclaimed. "Does that mean..."
New Year's Eve is the most ominous day of the year. We often stay up late to use human energy to dilute the evil energy of that day. Those who die on New Year's Eve have a particular characteristic: they do not undergo the Seven Days of Mourning but only the Qiqi. Therefore, Ghost Messengers often forget to collect their souls during Qiqi. Many who die on New Year's Eve cannot reincarnate, and due to the heavy evil energy they accumulate at death, they often become Vengeful Spirits.
Peng San Po nodded and said, "Yes, that's right. My poor child has been lost for decades without a trace. This is all my sin."
Suddenly, Peng San Po fell to his knees before Qiqi, his voice trembling with tears. "Others may not know, but I know you are a Worldly Wuchang. Could you please help me find out about my Yuer? How is he doing now? Has he reincarnated? If he hasn't, I won't be able to forgive myself even in death. Please, I beg you." With that, Peng San Po bowed three times before Qiqi.
Qiqi furrowed her brows tightly. Apart from her grandfather and a few others, no one knew her identity as an Underworld Wraith. How did Peng San Po find out?
But it wasn't too surprising; Peng San Po was originally a Zhu You Practitioner and knew things that ordinary people did not.
Wei Ning looked at Qiqi in astonishment, recalling that she had seen a Worldly Wuchang during her time in Guan Zhuang. However, that Impermanence left her with an "indelible" impression—nothing like how beautiful and charming Qiqi was.
Qiqi sighed and said, "I haven't done this job for many years..."
Before Qiqi could finish, Peng San Po interjected, "Even if you haven't been an Underworld Wraith for many years, you must have known many Brother Ghost Messengers when you were still a Ghost Messenger. Please help me inquire about whether my Yuer has successfully reincarnated; otherwise, I will never rest in peace."
Qiqi sighed again, unsure how to explain to Peng San Po that being an Underworld Wraith—also known as walking Impermanence—involves using the souls of the living to perform tasks in the underworld. One major characteristic of souls is their strong yang energy; they are less afraid of the yang energy from living people. Moreover, when someone dies, their relatives gather around them, creating a heavy yang atmosphere that some Ghost Messengers dare not approach. Therefore, the underworld often arranges for some living people to act as "underworld messengers," or walk Impermanence, so their souls can get close to dying individuals without fear of the surrounding relatives' yang energy. Once the soul leads the deceased's spirit out of the house, Ghost Messengers escort it to the underworld. However, this walking Impermanence usually completes soul collection tasks while the person is asleep and has no real connection with true Ghost Messengers; there is no question of friendship between them either.
Just like last time when someone asked Qiqi to spare their ancestors, it wasn't that Qiqi didn't want to, but rather that she didn't have the authority to do so.
Of course, Qiqi knew that even if she explained this to Peng San Po, Peng San Po would surely not believe her and would think that Qiqi was just angry and unwilling to help.
Seeing Peng San Po pleading desperately, and Qiqi looking conflicted, Wei Ning suddenly said, "How about this? I could use Soul Binding to bring Yuer's spirit here. If I can manage it, then she hasn't been reincarnated, and you two can meet once more. If not, then it means she has been reborn, and you can rest easy."
Peng San Po looked at Wei Ning in disbelief and said, "You can use Soul Binding? That's a high-level Dao Technique! You're so young."
Wei Ning smiled and replied, "I have a little understanding of it, just a little. I've never used it before; this will be my first time, so I don't know how effective it will be."
"Really? By the way, I've been here for quite a while and still don't know your name, Young Man."
"My name is Wei Ning."
"Could it be the Wei family from Chen Prefecture?" Peng San Po laughed. "That explains it! No wonder you're so impressive at such a young age. At first, I thought you were just someone Qiqi was raising... heh heh..."
Wei Ning's handsome face flushed red as he didn't know how to respond. He took out an object resembling a cow's horn from his bag and asked Peng San Po, "Granny, do you have any items to ward off evil?"
"Yes, yes!" Peng San Po moved out a screen from her house and said, "Is what you're holding the Rhinoceros Light? It seems you're truly an expert! I must admit my eyes are not as sharp. But how will you summon the soul?"
"I have my methods for that. However, Peng Granny, do you have any Nine-section Yin Bamboo?" The Yin Bamboo refers to bamboo that grows in shady mountains, and Nine-section Yin Bamboo specifically has nine segments and is said to have soul-binding properties.
"I don't have any here, but there's a bamboo forest behind my mountain. Let me take you there to look."
The three of them climbed the mountain, and Wei Ning quickly chopped down a few bamboo stalks. Qiqi couldn't help but ask, "What do you need those for?"
"To make a kite. Wait, I'll take you to fly it later."
"How boring." Qiqi knew that Wei Ning wouldn't just be idly taking her to fly kites on New Year's Eve; there must be some ulterior motive behind it. She just didn't like his mysterious demeanor.
Sure enough, when Wei Ning returned, he instructed Peng San Po to prepare offerings of three animals and fruits, as well as fine red candles and ceremonial vessels. Meanwhile, he went into the courtyard to start making the kite.
Before long, a large red kite appeared in Wei Ning's hands. The kite was well-crafted, with a nose and eyes; it was surprising that Wei Ning had such skills.
Suddenly, Qiqi seemed to understand something and exclaimed loudly, "I got it! You're making a 'Cursed Kite.'"
Wei Ning made a face as if to say, "How did you just figure that out?" He replied, "You finally understand; I thought you were going to be stupid forever."
Qiqi snorted coldly, refusing to engage in a verbal spar with him. Wei Ning felt triumphant inside.
As it turned out, the so-called 'Cursed Kite' was actually a form of dark magic. The practitioner would cast spells on the kite and then use children's love for flying kites to give these cursed kites to them. During the process of flying the kite, the child's soul would unknowingly attach itself to it. Once the kite reached a certain height, the string would snap, causing the child's soul to be unable to return to its body. The practitioner could then pick up the fallen kite and extract the child's soul from it. This kind of dark magic specifically targeted children and was extremely cruel, earning disdain from righteous individuals.
Moreover, since these "Cursed Kites" were mostly red, they were also referred to as Blood Kites. Therefore, if someone offers you or your child a red kite, you must refuse it; otherwise, you won't even realize how your soul could leave your body.
