As he circled around the large tree, Wei Ning discovered a gathering of ghosts. In the center, two black flames flickered; this must be the so-called "Yin Fire" of the Underworld. Countless ghosts surrounded the bonfire, drinking and feasting. However, the drink was not true wine but human blood! The food they consumed was not real fare either, but rather bones and flesh of the living!
In front of the bonfire sat a man dressed in a groom's outfit and a woman in a bridal gown. The bride's face was obscured by a red veil, making it difficult to discern her features, yet Wei Ning felt an unsettling familiarity with her.
I should observe for now, Wei Ning thought.
But suddenly, a ghost beside him made a sound that seemed to call out to its companions. Wei Ning knew he was in trouble.
Sure enough, several ghosts turned their heads and began searching in his direction. Realizing he could no longer hide, Wei Ning stood up straight.
The ghosts surged forward, surrounding him completely. They looked just like ordinary people, except for their pale faces. Standing there, they resembled lifeless paper figures upon closer inspection.
Suddenly, the groom stood up and waved his hand. All the ghosts obediently retreated at his command. He produced a large bowl filled to the brim with fresh blood and offered it to Wei Ning, signaling for him to drink.
Wei Ning knew better than to accept it. He had learned from Wang Tuozi about the tradition of ghost weddings, where spirits often invited living people to drink during the ceremony. Thanks to the Cow Tears he had applied, he could distinguish between humans and ghosts; an ordinary person might have fallen for this trap. If one drank from the ghost king's wedding cup, they would be dragged into the Underworld and would not die immediately but would gradually be invaded by Evil Energy until they became indistinguishable from ghosts.
Wei Ning had likely been mistaken for an invited guest.
He pushed the bowl away from the groom's hands, indicating that he would not drink. The ghosts around him grew restless and began screeching at him with bared teeth.
One ghost approached with a plate filled with dismembered human flesh. A wave of nausea washed over Wei Ning; if he hadn't used Cow Tears, this grotesque sight might have appeared as a feast to him.
The groom gestured for Wei Ning to eat, but there was no way he could stomach it. Wei Ning raised his hand and knocked the plate away.
The groom's anger flared as he extended his hand, revealing long, white claws aimed at Wei Ning's heart. Wei Ning stepped back three paces, executing the Seven Stars retreat while brandishing his Peach Wood Sword; a confrontation between man and ghost was imminent.
The surrounding ghosts erupted in excitement, cheering on their king.
"Stop!" A woman in white suddenly stepped forward, pulling the groom aside. They exchanged whispers in ghostly tones, and after a moment, the groom nodded. The woman then approached Wei Ning and made a face at him.
Seeing the woman in white, Wei Ning blurted out, "It's you!"
This woman was none other than Ding Ying, with whom Wei Ning had once shared a fleeting connection.
Ding Ying smiled gently at Wei Ning and said, "Long time no see, darling. Have you missed me?"
Wei Ning furrowed his brow and replied, "What are you doing here? How are you... with... these... people?"
"I've always been a ghost. If I don't hang out with ghosts, should I be with the living? Oh, how I wish I could be with you, but sadly, you don't want me." With that, Ding Ying's nose twitched as she feigned a pitiful expression.
"After all, we are from different worlds..."
"I don't want to hear it! I don't want to hear it!" Ding Ying covered her ears, interrupting Wei Ning. "You're just saying that because of that stinky woman. She's dead too, just like me. You're still..."
Wei Ning knew exactly who she was referring to and blurted out, "Where is she? What have you done to her?"
"Hmph! Seeing how worried you are about her makes me even less inclined to tell you. Tell me, do you want her or do you want me?"
Wei Ning felt somewhat annoyed by Ding Ying's stubbornness. However, knowing that she might reveal Lin Lingsu's whereabouts, he softened his tone. "Alright, stop messing around. It's impossible for us... I mean her..." As he mentioned Lin Lingsu's name, a pang of pain shot through his heart. "We are already from different worlds... sigh!"
"I don't care! I know I'm your legally wedded wife, and you can only love me! You can only cherish me! Your heart can only hold me! No other women are allowed! You love me and not that stinky woman."
Wei Ning found it amusing; he truly didn't know how he had attracted such a willful ghost. "Ding Ying—if I remember correctly, that's your name—it's impossible for us. You've already... already... just listen to me and reincarnate. In your next life, you'll surely find a man who loves you dearly."
"I don't want to, I don't want to. I want you. In life, I belong to you; in death, I will be your ghost. So, you can't abandon me."
"But you're already a ghost!" Wei Ning couldn't hold back any longer and shouted.
"I knew it, I knew it! You think I'm just a wandering spirit, but... but... if I weren't a ghost, if I were human, would you want me then?"
Wei Ning replied, "How is that even possible?"
"Come here." Ding Ying took Wei Ning's hand and led him aside. Wei Ning felt nothing from Ding Ying's touch; it was icy cold.
Once they were sure no one was eavesdropping, Ding Ying said mysteriously, "I know a way to come back to life. As long as my Three Souls and Seven Spirits are intact, with just one thing, I can live again."
"What thing?"
"Do you know about the strange family of Corpse Drivers in Chen Prefecture? They have the surname Wei?"
Wei Ning's heart stirred at the mention of his own name. He replied, "I know a bit about them, but not much."
"I'll tell you. That family is truly remarkable; they all possess an Undying Bone. If you can find a member of the Wei Family and kill him to obtain his Undying Bone, then kill a beautiful woman and use my method to attach the Undying Bone to her body, I can transfer my Three Souls and Seven Spirits into her. Then, you can choose any beautiful wife you want!"
Wei Ning felt a heaviness in his heart. Hearing this ghost talk about murder as if it were a game left him expressionless. "Are you asking me to kill two people for your revival?"
"What's wrong with killing two people? Are you unwilling or scared? If you won't do it, I'll go myself. But you have to follow my method; that's how I can come back to life. Then we can be together forever. How does that sound, husband? By the way, what’s your name? I still don’t know."
Wei Ning thought for a moment and said, "My name is Wang Ning. By the way, where did Lin Lingsu go? You must know."
"I know, but I won't tell you."
"Is it the ghost bride from today?"
"I won't tell you."
Wei Ning said coldly, "Did you capture Lin Lingsu?"
"Who taught you to be captivated by that vixen? You are mine, and no one is allowed to compete with me."
Indeed, the most poisonous heart belongs to a woman. No wonder Liu Linglang despises this woman so much. Wei Ning couldn't help but feel a bit of disgust towards the beautiful yet treacherous woman.
"I have Lin Lingsu; she is my God of Joy. No matter what, I will take her away completely. This is my profession."
"Do you love her?"
"I..." Wei Ning could hardly answer this question. Could it be that he had truly fallen in love with Lin Lingsu? But now they were on different paths, so what was the point of discussing this? A bitter smile appeared on Wei Ning's lips as he said, "I am going to take Lin Lingsu away now. If you know what's good for you, you'd better not interfere; otherwise, don't blame me for being rude."
Ignoring Ding Ying's reaction, he waved his sleeve and left.
