Lin Lingsu is dead!
"What's wrong? Do you know her? This girl is indeed pitiful, so beautiful, yet a femme fatale. I never expected her to die so young. When she was brought here yesterday, I mourned for quite a while."
"Who brought her? Where are they? How did she die?" The Maid Granny was taken aback by Wei Ning's barrage of questions and replied, "I didn't ask who brought her. I just received the payment. She was sent to Jiangxi Dragon Tiger Mountain, so it must be someone from Dragon Tiger Mountain. A big shot is still a big shot; now they've turned into businesspeople, it's quite the surprise."
The Maid Granny disparaged Dragon Tiger Mountain, saying, "This girl should be one of theirs. It seems she had an accident while completing some task. Haha, someone from Dragon Tiger Mountain is going to have to send her back to Zhu You; this is a first for Pangu."
At this moment, Wei Ning's heart was in turmoil, feeling as if it were being sliced by knives. There was no strength left to banter with the Maid Granny. She gazed at Lin Lingsu's face—the cute girl who once called her a mouse at the foot of Phoenix Mountain, the ruthless female demon who fought alongside her against Blood Corps in that mysterious cave, the strange girl who clearly knew her but never acknowledged her, and the stubborn girl who had been poisoned by Snake Venom yet refused to ask for help.
Now she lay here, lifeless and silent. The most absurd part was that Wei Ning had treated her like a thoughtless God of Joy and sent her home.
Time changes everything; fate plays its tricks.
Wei Ning truly didn't know whether to laugh or cry.
The Maid Granny seemed to sense that Wei Ning's relationship with this God of Joy was unusual. She patted Wei Ning's shoulder and said, "Once someone is dead, they cannot come back to life. You should grieve and accept it. The greatest help you can give her is to send her back to Jiangxi Dragon Tiger Mountain for a proper burial."
Wei Ning asked, "Granny, do you really not know how she died?"
The Maid Granny shook her head and replied, "What’s the point of asking these things now? She's gone..."
Suppressing her sorrow, Wei Ning nodded and said, "Yes, I was in such a hurry when I came that I didn't prepare the ceremonial items for Welcoming the God of Joy, so..."
"Maid Granny" nodded and said, "I have a spare set here that your Wei Family used. Since it's of no use to me, I might as well give it to you."
With that, "Maid Granny" took out a set of clothes from the wardrobe, along with tools like the "Soul Bell" and other items for a "Corpse Driver."
"This is a map from Hengyang to the Corpse Driver Inn in Jiangxi. It's detailed, so if you follow this map, you won't go wrong," she said, handing "Wei Ning" a yellowed animal skin map.
"There's no rush. Have a bowl of rice before you leave; I'll go cook now," "Maid Granny" added.
"Wei Ning" was in a state of turmoil and had no appetite for food. She forced herself to take a couple of bites as darkness began to fall outside.
Once she had donned the outfit, she tied a beautifully woven green belt made of straw around her waist. Looking at "Lin Lingsu" inside the coffin, she suppressed her grief and said, "Grandma, please..."
A "Corpse Driver" must perform the rites without anyone else present, and "Maid Granny" understood this well. She nodded and stepped outside.
Finally, only "Wei Ning" and "Lin Lingsu" remained in the room. "Wei Ning" arranged incense burners and offerings on the Eight Immortals table, bowed to the Earth Lord, and took a large "Black Shroud" to wrap around "Lin Lingsu's" body. She placed a "Black Hat" on "Lin Lingsu's" head and affixed a "Corpse Fixing Talisman" on her forehead. Shaking the "Soul Bell" in her hand, she formed the corpse incantation with her fingers. Slowly, the already cold body of "Lin Lingsu" rose from the coffin. This was "Wei Ning's" first time using the "Soul Bell," but the art of being a "Corpse Driver," though varied, remained fundamentally the same. "Wang Tuozi" had taught her how to use the "Soul Bell," and perhaps because she bore the surname Wei, she found it easier to grasp its use. Leading "Lin Lingsu," she embarked on her second journey as a "Corpse Driver."
The night passed without incident, and as dawn approached, "Wei Ning," following "Maid Granny's" map for Corpse Drivers, found the first Corpse Driver Inn.
She must be nearing Zhuzhou now, thought "Wei Ning," glancing at the gradually lightening eastern sky.
As she shook the "Soul Bell," preparing to call out, a faint voice suddenly echoed nearby: “Yin People borrow this path; Yang Person should avoid.”
“Why am I encountering fellow travelers?” thought "Wei Ning." It might be better to wait; having company would be nice.
Before long, the sound grew closer, and through the morning mist, a group of people could be seen approaching, heading directly toward the Fortune Inn not far from Wei Ning.
The Corpse Handler, around forty years old, had a pale face and a beard. He held a Corpse Stick in his hand, followed by a string of God of Joy, about five or six in number. Upon seeing only one God of Joy behind Wei Ning, he couldn't help but scoff and mutter to himself, "So it's just a novice." He raised his voice even louder, as if trying to compete with Wei Ning's volume.
Wei Ning chuckled silently and shook his Soul Bell. "With the God of Joy passing through, both spirits and ghosts retreat."
Upon noticing the Soul Bell in Wei Ning's hand, the Corpse Handler's eyes widened in surprise as he blurted out, "Chen Prefecture Wei Family."
Wei Ning nodded. "Chen Prefecture Wei Ning, greetings to you, Senior Wu."
Seeing Wei Ning's respectful demeanor, the man felt a surge of goodwill toward him and smiled. "Talent emerges from generation to generation. I didn't expect your Wei Family would produce such a handsome Footman like you. Are you heading into the Fortune Inn? Perfect timing; we can keep each other company. My name is Wu Yunfei; according to our seniority, you should call me 'Uncle.'"
Wei Ning seized the opportunity and replied with a smile, "Uncle, please go ahead."
In the world of Corpse Handlers, there were rules: the master or someone of higher seniority must always walk in front while apprentices could only follow at the back. Seeing Wei Ning's obedient and charming nature, Wu Yunfei chuckled and did not hesitate. With a wave of his Corpse Driving Stick, he led the group of God of Joy forward.
