"Brother Zhang, you take Wu Haozi and go first. He's seriously injured and can't be delayed. I need to handle her here; otherwise, the poison will spread to her heart, and she might not make it to the hospital."
Zhang Ye nodded and carried Wu Haozi away.
Wei Ning looked at Lin Lingsu's swollen leg and quickly found a strap to tightly bind above her knee joint to prevent the snake venom from spreading to her heart. Then, he fetched clean water from the riverbank to wash away the remaining snake venom from the wound. After that, he used a lighter to sterilize his knife by heating it until it was red hot, then made a cross-shaped incision on the wound and several surrounding cuts to allow the snake venom to drain out.
Lin Lingsu did not stop Wei Ning's actions; she clutched her clothing tightly, seemingly in pain but remained silent.
This wasn't enough; the snake venom would attack her heart, Wei Ning thought. He took out a plastic bag and put it over his mouth, then leaned close to Lin Lingsu's wound and sucked hard a few times, drawing out the snake venom. Her leg began to swell slightly less. Wei Ning then retrieved some anti-inflammatory medicine (since a Corpse Handler often roamed through mountains and forests, he had prepared a comprehensive supply of emergency medications). After completing the initial treatment, Wei Ning finally breathed a sigh of relief. However, this was only preliminary care; without an antidote, if things continued like this, Lin Lingsu's leg could face amputation at any moment, or even worse, threaten her life.
Wei Ning couldn't afford to hesitate any longer. He picked Lin Lingsu up and searched for a mountain path. Unfortunately, this area seemed deserted with no trails in sight. In his anxious state, he suddenly spotted a boat by the riverbank; he didn't know which fisherman had left it there.
"Taking the water route will be faster," Wei Ning thought. "A life is at stake; there's no time to waste now. I'll just 'borrow' it and pay for it later."
With that thought in mind, Wei Ning carried Lin Lingsu onto the boat, arranged her on the back seat, grabbed a bamboo pole, and swiftly paddled downstream.
"Where's the nearest clinic? If I delay..." Wei Ning fretted while Lin Lingsu remained surprisingly calm, holding above her wound to slow the spread of the snake venom.
However, as Wei Ning paddled harder, he felt something was off. Although he was going downstream, the riverbed was narrowing and the water level was dropping. What was happening? Wei Ning felt puzzled but realized that turning back now would waste precious time and might not guarantee finding a clinic.
The river gradually dried up, revealing the riverbed ahead—a shallow area with a towering mountain behind them. Wei Ning was taken aback; how could this happen? Where exactly were they?
"Forget it; let's go check it out first." Wei Ning carried Lin Lingsu off the boat.
"There’s a cave at the foot of the mountain," Wei Ning suddenly exclaimed, as if he had discovered a new continent. "This must have been dug by the locals for convenience, so they don’t have to cross the mountains." With renewed energy, he carried Lin Lingsu into the cave.
The cave was narrow, and Lin Lingsu and Wei Ning were almost pressed against each other. Additionally, their clothes had become wet from walking through the waterway, clinging tightly to their bodies. This close contact seemed to create a different kind of intimacy than mere embrace. Wei Ning began to worry about Lin Lingsu's condition from the Snake Venom but was distracted by the rising temperature around them. In the darkness, he felt himself starting to heat up, especially with Lin Lingsu's chest pressing against him, stirring feelings within him that made his mouth dry. Lin Lingsu's delicate features were hidden beneath a mask, making it impossible to discern her expression. Yet, beneath that mask, one could only wonder if her cheeks were flushed as well.
"What’s wrong with me?" Wei Ning shook his head to clear his thoughts and focused on moving forward with Lin Lingsu in his arms.
The cave began narrow but gradually widened significantly. After walking several dozen steps, they suddenly emerged into a vast expanse of open fields that stretched endlessly before them. Finally, they had found a town, and Wei Ning felt a surge of joy.
He hurriedly carried Lin Lingsu forward towards a row of neatly arranged wooden houses that seemed constructed in an ancient style, distinctly different from modern architecture. The quaint charm of the place was enhanced by mulberry and bamboo trees planted around the houses, and the sounds of chickens clucking and dogs barking echoed through the fields.
"Is anyone there? Hello?" Wei Ning knocked on the door of one house. A child appeared, dressed only in a bellyband due to the heat, with hair styled in pigtails. Upon seeing Wei Ning, the child looked particularly surprised. "Who... who are you? I've never seen you before!"
"I’m a traveler," Wei Ning replied quickly. "My friend has been poisoned by Snake Venom. Can you please tell me where the clinic is? I need to get her serum urgently; it will be too late if I delay."
Wei Ning spoke rapidly like cannon fire, but the child stared at him and Lin Lingsu as if they were monsters. "You... you... Grandpa! Grandpa! There are strange people here!"
Suddenly, the child dashed back into the house and soon returned with an elderly man.
The old man wore ancient wide-sleeved robes, his long hair tied up in a bun atop his head. Wei Ning found this peculiar and thought to himself that perhaps they were filming a historical drama. After all, this was an ancient paradise reminiscent of Taohuayuan; these people must be dressed in traditional clothing to attract tourists.
The elder scrutinized Wei Ning closely. Meanwhile, Wei Ning noticed that Lin Lingsu's temperature was rising even more; her eyes were drooping as if she might faint at any moment. Unable to contain his impatience, he asked urgently, "Excuse me, sir! Where is your clinic? I need to treat my friend!"
"The clinic? What is this clinic you speak of? From where do you come? Where do you wish to go? How did you arrive here?" At this moment, Wei Ning had no time for riddles; sweat dripped down his forehead as he pleaded desperately, "Snake Venom! Snake Venom! I need serum!"
Following Wei Ning's gaze, the old man noticed Lin Lingsu's swollen leg and quickly said, "Come inside, come inside."
With no other choice, Wei Ning followed the old man into the house and found the furnishings quite strange; there wasn't a single electrical appliance in sight.
"Route, bring me my medicine box," the old man shouted. In a moment, a child brought over a bamboo-woven box. The old man opened it and took out a porcelain bottle, extracting a pill from it. He mixed it with water and applied it to Lin Lingsu's wound. Miraculously, the swelling began to subside, and her skin tone returned to normal.
Wei Ning felt a wave of relief wash over him. It seemed he had stumbled upon an old doctor living in the mountains. These people had lived in isolation for years, and their remedies for snake venom might even surpass those of conventional hospitals. Since finding a hospital right now was impossible, he decided to let this old man treat her first and then head to the hospital later to eliminate any remaining toxins.
"In three days, I guarantee this young lady will be just fine."
"Thank you so much! Please accept this small token of appreciation..." Wei Ning took out two hundred yuan and tried to hand it to the old man.
"What is this? I've never seen such a thing," the old man frowned.
Thinking the old man found it insufficient, Wei Ning gritted his teeth and pulled out another two hundred. This was half a month's living expenses for him: "Old sir, we are just students and don't have much money..."
The old man looked even more puzzled. "I truly do not know what this is. Where do you come from? How did you arrive here?"
"We just came through that hole."
