"Today is the first, I suggest we go out for dinner together," Zhang Kai said.
"Sure, it's on me," Guo Aizi nodded.
"Forget it, let's go Dutch," Wei Ning replied.
"Yeah, going Dutch is best."
The four of them chatted for a while longer, then tidied up their dormitory before heading to a restaurant not far from the school.
The restaurant was neither large nor small; it seemed to cater specifically to college students, and the prices were quite reasonable. Perhaps since they arrived before the dinner rush, there were only a few scattered patrons inside, making their group the largest.
After sitting for a while, they noticed that no server had come to attend to them. Sun Bing, who was impatient by nature, grew restless after waiting and slammed his hand on the table, shouting, "Boss! We have customers here; why aren't you coming to serve us?"
With a loud crash, a bowl shattered.
The four exchanged glances, looking at their own bowls which were intact. It wasn't Sun Bing who had broken anything. Just as they processed this noise, another crash followed.
"How dare you cheat on me! If you want a divorce, I'm ready for it. I can't live like this anymore; my mother has suffered enough these past few years."
"Damn it! You just can't stand seeing another man, can you? If I don't peel the skin off this shameless woman today, I'll write my name backward!"
"If you have the guts to lay a finger on me today, I won't let this go. Who told you that your thing is so useless?"
"You..."
Listening from outside, the four found it amusing that the boss was in the middle of a domestic dispute. No wonder no one was attending to them.
"Smash!" Another bowl shattered. "I can't live like this anymore! I followed you when I was eighteen; you looked decent enough back then. Who knew your thing would be so useless? I must have been blind to choose you. I'm a woman too; I can't stand living like a widow. Let's be clear today—if you want a divorce, I'll sign without hesitation. But if you don't want to divorce me, then you'd better make that thing work! Otherwise, I’ll sleep with whoever I want! You better stay outside that window and watch! See how it's done! And check if yours can even stand up! Look at your pathetic self! You're tall and strong but utterly useless!"
"You... you..." The man hesitated; he knew he couldn't argue about his inadequacy and slammed his hand on the table instead. "Why are you so shameless?"
The four finally understood what was happening: the male protagonist's inadequacy led to his partner's infidelity and subsequent confrontation. The woman seemed more aggrieved than he was. They all shared a knowing smile and silently judged the man.
"Man, this guy is pathetic. As a man, his life is pretty much over. What a tragedy," Sun Bing sighed, reflecting on his own experiences.
"Forget it, let's eat. Other people's business has nothing to do with us," Wei Ning said. "We're just here to eat."
"Right," Zhang Kai agreed. "We're just here to eat." He slammed his hand on the table and shouted, "Boss, are you still doing business? If not, we're leaving."
"Damn it, what a downer." The man in the room was already filled with frustration, and Zhang Kai had hit a nerve. Not backing down, Zhang Kai retorted, "True, there's no need to stay at a restaurant run by a guy like Wei Ge. Brothers, let's go. We don't want to eat here and end up like him; that would be terrible." Sun Bing and Guo Aizi immediately joined in, eager to stir up chaos.
"Damn it, I won't let you off today." The man in the room found his outlet for anger and rushed out, grabbing Zhang Kai by the collar and surprisingly lifting the 1.8-meter tall Zhang Kai with one hand!
Seeing his brother being bullied, Sun Bing grabbed a stool from under the table and swung it at the man's head with quick and fierce movements, clearly not his first time.
The man blocked with his hand and kicked out, sending the 180-pound Sun Bing crashing to the ground, barely able to get up.
Initially, these people thought that a man who couldn't even handle his own affairs—his wife straying—wouldn't have much fighting spirit. They never expected him to be so fierce right from the start.
"If I don't tear you apart today, I won't believe it!"
Wei Ning saw Zhang Kai being humiliated and felt he had to step in; otherwise, it would be too shameful. As he took a closer look at the burly man, an idea struck him suddenly. He blurted out, "Brother Zhang!"
It turned out that Wei Ning recognized this person; this was Zhang Ye, who had fought alongside Wei Qiuxi and Wei Ning.
Zhang Ye looked at Wei Ning for a long moment after hearing his surname called out before suddenly exclaiming joyfully, "It's you, buddy! Haha."
At that moment, Zhang Ye had no interest in dealing with Zhang Kai anymore. With a push of his hand, he sent Zhang Kai several meters away. Then he hugged Wei Ning tightly and said, "I can't believe you're here! That's great! I've been looking for you guys for so long. Where's your grandfather?"
Mentioning his grandfather darkened Wei Ning's expression. "My grandfather... my grandfather..."
"Shit, don’t tell me he’s dead."
"I don’t know... I..." Seeing Zhang Kai and the others around made it awkward for Wei Ning. Understanding this, Zhang Ye said quickly, "Alright, come inside with me. Guys, I was a bit rough earlier; my bad." He pulled Wei Ning into the room.
Zhang Kai and the others were now intimidated by Zhang Ye's fierceness and dared not speak up again. If it weren't for Wei Ning's connection to him, they wouldn't know what might have happened.
Zhang Kai said, "Forget it; it's all a misunderstanding. Wei Ge—oh no, Brother Zhang—let's just forget about it."
Zhang Kai led Wei Ning into the inner room where Wei Ning informed Zhang Ye about his grandfather's disappearance but left out details about Wang Tuozi and others. Zhang Ye was instantly disappointed and muttered to himself, "Could it be that there's really no hope? Sigh."
Zhang Ye had repeatedly ignored Wei Qiuxi's advice and ended up marrying the woman he was with, going against his family's wishes. Zhang Laosi was furious, and Zhang Ye knew he couldn't stay at home any longer. He borrowed some money from his friends and opened a shop next to Provincial University with his wife. For the first half of the year, the couple seemed happy together. However, gradually, Zhang Ye realized something was wrong; the time they spent together was getting shorter and shorter. He eventually concluded that it was all due to the influence of Demon Wolf and regretted not listening to Wei Qiuxi's words. Zhang Kai had tried to find out Wei Qiuxi's whereabouts through various contacts, but there was no news. As time passed, Zhang Ye's situation worsened, and his wife grew increasingly dissatisfied, leading her to seek comfort elsewhere. This resulted in the scene that Wei Ning and others had witnessed.
After a few days, Wei Ning and the others were busy with military training and classes. Due to her relationship with Zhang Ye, Wei Ning often came over to eat at his place. Zhang Ye was generous and hardly charged her or her friends for meals. He had many connections in town and tried to gather information about Wei Qiuxi, but there were still no leads, leaving both of them quite frustrated.
Eventually, Zhang Ye's wife moved out. Wei Ning tried to comfort him, reminding him that he was a man and that it wouldn't be too bad.
More than a month later, Zhang Ye suddenly found Wei Ning in her dormitory. Upon seeing her, he excitedly exclaimed, "Wei Ning! I have news about your grandfather!"
"Really?" Wei Ning could hardly believe her ears and jumped up in excitement.
"Someone said he was spotted around Changde, but I don't know if he's still there."
"Let's go! Take me there now; I'll pay for your travel expenses."
"You're so eager," Zhang Ye replied. "But I heard that the area where your grandfather was seen is quite dangerous; it seems like a zombie-infested place. If you go there just the two of us, it could be risky. It would be best if we brought someone else along—three people on the road can look out for each other."
Wei Ning thought for a moment. It wasn't realistic to call Zhang Kai and the others, but who else did she know? Suddenly, an idea struck her: "Wu Haozi! Yes, Wu Haozi! I'll call him and see if he agrees."
With that, Wei Ning called Wu Haozi. He readily agreed without hesitation and immediately took a bus to Provincial Capital. Since Wei Ning's supplies were running low, she decided to visit Ghost Market that night to stock up.
