Wei Ning suddenly sat up in bed, realizing that the outside world was already bright. It turned out to be just another dream.
"Ding Ying," who is she? Why did she call me husband? As Wei Ning regained her senses, memories of the enchanting moments with Ding Ying in her dream flooded back, stirring her emotions once more.
"If only Ling hadn't come at that time," a strange thought suddenly crossed Wei Ning's mind.
In the following days, Liu Linglang no longer sought out Wei Ning, and the woman named Ding Ying did not appear in Wei Ning's dreams again. She wondered if Ling was truly angry with her or if something else was going on. As for Ding Ying, Wei Ning felt a sense of loss, but life had to go on.
Wei Ning tried calling her master several times, but Wang Tuozi's phone was always off. Confused, she recalled Wang Tuozi's parting words: "Could it be that my master really doesn't want me anymore? And what could he be busy with? I could help him with something."
Before she knew it, summer vacation had passed, and Wei Ning finally bid farewell to the harsh realities of high school life. She stepped into the ivory tower that many had envied. Provincial University was no ordinary institution; very few from her class had been accepted there. Wei Ning had become a dark horse this year, used as an example of how diligent study in senior year could lead to success. Feeling guilty, she rarely contacted her old school and went directly to Provincial University for registration on September 1st.
Provincial University seemed hot, but her department was quite cold. After a brief assessment, Wei Ning realized that apart from herself and a few others who had applied directly, most of her classmates were transferred from other programs. After paying her tuition and buying some daily necessities, she headed to her apartment.
When Wei Ning arrived at the apartment, three people were already there—she was the last to arrive. The bed assigned to her was next to the door, which made her frown slightly.
Noticing a newcomer, a tall and thin classmate wearing glasses smiled at Wei Ning and said, "Hello! Welcome to our group; I'm Zhang Kai." He pointed to a chubby guy beside him and added, "That’s Sun Bing."
"And him," Zhang Kai pointed to the person on the top bunk at the far end. "His name is Guo Fei; you can just call him Guo Aizi from now on."
The other two greeted Wei Ning in turn, and she nodded while introducing herself.
Wei Ning walked over to Guo Aizi and said, "Excuse me, could we possibly switch beds?"
At that moment, Guo Aizi had already made the bed. Seeing Wei Ning like this, he readily said, "No problem." With that, he jumped down to tidy up his own sleeping area. Wei Ning didn't expect this person to be so easygoing, and he felt a surge of joy in his heart as he said, "Thank you! I'll treat you to a meal later." He helped Guo Aizi clean up.
The bed swap wasn't because Wei Ning was uncomfortable in his own space; when he first entered, he had observed the surroundings. Only Guo Aizi's spot had the strongest Evil Energy, making it the most suitable for Liu Linglang's growth, which was why he suggested swapping beds with him.
Wei Ning took out some clean clothes and bed sheets from his bundle and arranged his bed. When he pulled out the wooden house he had made for Liu Linglang, everyone found it intriguing and gathered around, asking, "What is this? It's quite interesting."
Wei Ning smiled and replied, "This is just a little thing I thought was fun, so I placed it on my bedside as decoration. Nothing special."
"Can we borrow it to play with?"
Wei Ning hesitated; he worried that if everyone played with it, they might disturb the Yin-Yang Cycle inside. The others assumed it was meant for him and didn't press further. After glancing at the wooden house a few more times, they dispersed.
Wei Ning placed the wooden house on his bedside and lit a few incense sticks. His friends became interested and remarked, "I didn't expect you, a college student, to be so superstitious."
Wei Ning chuckled and said, "We're studying in the Funeral Department; we'll definitely have to deal with corpses in the future. This is just for peace of mind."
The other three nodded in agreement. Guo Aizi added, "It's the same in Hengyang; people in the countryside believe in these things too."
"Same here. Damn it! I failed my college entrance exam and ended up in this cursed department instead of Chinese Literature. Damn it! I just didn't want to repeat my senior year; otherwise—damn it!"
It seemed that mentioning this made Zhang Kai particularly angry. He pulled out a pack of cigarettes from his pocket and offered them to the three others. Wei Ning and Guo Aizi declined; it appeared that only Zhang Kai and Sun Bing were smokers.
"Isn't that right? Life is just a tragedy. Here I am, Sun Bing, weighing over 180 pounds, destined to become a poor soul carrying corpses. My youth, my future, and this heart I've guarded for eighteen years have all vanished into thin air..." Sun Bing sighed dramatically and began singing "Only by Fighting Can You Win" in a sarcastic tone.
"Get lost."
"Sing your mother's ass."
"Lord, please save this poor idiot."
The other three joined in to boo Sun Bing.
