The night was as dark as ink, and the Cold Light shimmered like water.
The cold moonlight pierced through the clouds, slowly descending from the night sky.
Here, atop the mountains dozens of kilometers away from Jiang Hai, a girl named Shishi stood on the back of White Wolf, holding Snow's hand, staring blankly at the enormous pit at the far end of the horizon... and the rising, dreadful White Light that revealed her confusion.
"Is that... Dad's presence?"
She furrowed her brows, somewhat puzzled. "Why does it feel a bit different?"
Carried by the air was the heat wave generated by the explosion; even the wind felt warm under the scorching temperature.
This place was far from the center of the explosion and had not been affected by that terrifying weapon, yet the power of Nuclear Weapons still reached here.
Many trees were snapped by the raging winds, and the grass was blown about, turning into scattered stalks under the night sky.
The Third-Stage Zombies stood atop the mountain peaks, hesitant to take another step forward.
This group of high-level Zombies was exceptionally sensitive to the radiation following the Nuclear Weapons explosion. Unlike Chen Xiaofeng's group of Zombies, they had not received protection from the Evil God and thus could not be immune to this invisible force.
If they moved forward, they could not guarantee their safety or remain unaffected.
For them, this was already their limit.
However, on that distant horizon, the erupting battle did not require their intervention.
They were too weak.
Although they could almost be considered at the top of the Food Chain compared to most creatures in this world, if their enemy was the Evil God and its incarnations, this group of merely Third-Stage Zombies was still far too weak.
They could only stand still, watching helplessly as the battle erupted at the distant horizon. Yet, there was nothing they could do.
"The senior has truly accepted the power of the Evil God..."
Holding Shishi's hand while standing on the back of the White Wolf, Xue took a deep breath and murmured, "He can now truly be called Nyarlathotep."
Shishi suddenly looked at her, a hint of panic in her eyes.
"Will Daddy become a monster?"
The girl gently patted her head, smiling to comfort Shishi's anxious feelings. "Don't worry, the senior is still the same senior. There may be some changes, but he will ultimately remain the person we know—the kind father, the gentle man. The power of the Evil God won't turn him into a monster."
Only then did Shishi let out a sigh of relief.
"That's great."
However, when the girl lifted her head, the worry in her eyes went unnoticed by Shishi.
If he truly accepted the power of the Evil God and opened his body and mind to that force, would he still be the same person?
Having gained such a lofty identity and powers that even transcended space and time, would Chu Donglin still be the Chu Donglin they knew? Would his heart really remain unchanged?
A sense of unease began to creep into Xue's heart.
She understood that no one in this world remained unchanged. Constantly adapting to their environment and transforming themselves is part of being human. But when faced with the overwhelming might of the Evil God, what would that transformation entail? No one could be certain.
"So I am still just a mortal."
With the sword in hand, Chu Donglin unleashed a cold light that silently appeared behind the Landwalker. He smiled lightly and said, "Do not attempt to use your Evil God's methods to gauge me."
The sword light surged like a tide, almost enveloping the entire area.
The power of the Evil God, when unleashed recklessly, was enough to destroy everything.
Even under the suppression of the Eldritch Field laid by the remnants of Cthulhu, Chu Donglin still erupted with remarkable combat strength.
The tidal wave of Cold Light sword shadows came crashing down, almost instantly tearing apart a massive chunk of the Landwalker's body.
Amidst the monster's agonizing wails, the shrieks of Eldritch God Hastur echoed from beneath the earth.
"Nyarlathotep!"
The hoarse cries were filled with a bone-deep hatred that sent chills down one's spine.
"You will die! You will die a terrible death!"
Currently, it could not leave the underground world and dared not appear on the surface recklessly, so it could only rely on its avatar to confront its enemies.
However, this terrifying avatar, which rampaged through the mortal realm without anyone to stop it, appeared clumsy and powerless against Chu Donglin. It quickly fell into a disadvantageous position, almost unable to fight back at all.
If not for Chu Donglin needing to keep an eye on Liu Xiner and her sister on the stone platform, worried that the Evil God lurking underground would take advantage of his distraction to attack them, he would have already dealt with this Landwalker and ended the battle.
Yet even so, the fight was rapidly approaching its conclusion in one-sided slaughter.
The screams of Eldritch God Hastur continued to echo from below, painfully ringing in one's ears. Meanwhile, its other companion, the Evil God named Cthulhu, remained conspicuously absent.
A sense of foreboding gradually settled in Chu Donglin's heart.
He furrowed his brows, staring at the incarnation of the Evil God before him. As he severed the creature's arm with a swift strike, he coldly asked, "Where is Cthulhu? Where has it gone?"
Deep underground, the Evil God let out a sinister laugh.
"Have you finally remembered that fellow? I thought you had forgotten all about it."
The sword suddenly gleamed, and in an instant, it cleaved off another arm of the Landwalker.
Amidst the Evil God's wails, Chu Donglin coldly pressed on, "Where is it?"
The malicious glee in the Evil God's laughter only intensified his ominous premonition.
He nearly soared into the sky, his sword radiating its strongest light, ready to slay the Evil God before him and using the cold threat to force the creature to reveal its secrets.
However, Hastur had never intended to hide anything. It laughed heartily, eager to relish the panic and fear of the person before it, and spoke without hesitation.
"Who do you think in this world could decipher human technological knowledge in such a short time and wield their weapons? Nyarlathotep? My dear enemy? Do you remember the disastrous defeat of Pisces?"
Chu Donglin's expression changed instantly.
He had not inherited Nyarlathotep's memories, so he was completely unaware of the so-called defeat of Pisces. But the mention of human weapons by the Evil God...
Instinctively, he looked up towards the distant horizon. In that direction, a terrifying nuclear bomb had once flown through the darkened sky, nearly leveling this place. He had originally thought it was the work of some human controlled by the Evil God, but it seemed his assumption was wrong?
He could no longer afford to think about anything else. With a decisive strike, he completely annihilated the Evil God incarnation before him and rushed towards the two sisters on the stone platform, lifting them into his arms.
The power of the Evil God erupted around him, and he soared into the air, holding the two sisters tightly as the twisted sword propelled him toward the other side of Jiang Hai city.
There lay the last human Survivor Base of Jiang Hai, the final hope of this nation, gathering all its military strength.
Most importantly, a man named Chu Donglin had his parents and loved ones there, along with someone he was familiar with—the playful and adorable daughter of General Ban Qingya, and the mischievous twin sisters, Keara.
"Absolutely not!"
A powerful force tugged at him from all directions, trying to keep the flying man grounded. Beneath the earth, the Evil God's malicious laughter echoed harshly, while Chu Donglin roared in anger, battling against the Evil God's grasping power with sheer madness.
"I will never let you succeed!"
A pale light slashed from his hand, almost tearing through the air itself, cutting even the intangible atmosphere.
Under the night sky, a beam of light pierced through the clouds for thousands of meters, directly penetrating both sky and earth, shredding countless dark clouds and forming a massive void among them.
However, the Evil God's grasping force was formless and intangible, surrounding him from all sides, unwilling to let him go easily.
In Liu Xiner's eyes, a strange confusion appeared. "Brother-in-law, what’s happening?"
She couldn't understand why Chu Donglin looked so anxious; he seemed to have the upper hand. Why was he so flustered?
Her sister glanced up toward the direction where the nuclear bomb had risen earlier and silently shook her head.
"Is it a threat from nuclear weapons...?"
Feeling somewhat weak, she leaned against Chu Donglin along with her sister and asked quietly without disturbing him, "Does the Evil God want to bomb Jianghai Base? With nuclear weapons?"
The guess sent a wave of terror through the younger sister.
"Uncle and Aunt are still in the base!"
Chu Donglin nodded grimly, acknowledging their speculation with a troubled expression.
He slashed at the power of the Evil God, desperately trying to break through Hastur's obstruction. However, the force of The King in Yellow surrounded him from all sides, nearly trapping him completely; even the air became thick and viscous, like quicksand.
The Evil God, who had remained hidden until now, finally revealed its sharpest claws, cackling with delight as it watched Chu Donglin struggle, letting out a hearty laugh.
"Watch your own failure unfold before your eyes, Nyarlathotep! You are ultimately no match for us. No matter how you struggle, your fate is to slowly fade away in the eternal starry sky... just like those drifting meteors!"
Golden light rose from the horizon.
The terrifying power that had once launched a nuclear missile and leveled the area reappeared in the night sky.
The light piercing through the clouds was the spark created by missiles' exhaust flames as they cut through the air, trailing long tails behind them. They shot through the night sky, slicing through the clouds, heading toward Jianghai Base several dozen miles away.
In that moment, Chu Donglin roared almost madly, his eyes wide with despair.
"No!" (To be continued)
