Under the cover of night, the Ming Snake Base lay in ruins, a desolate wasteland.
A tide of Zombies wandered through the base, having devoured every living soul that could be consumed.
In front of the tallest building within the base, White Wolf arrived carrying Chu Donglin.
At White Wolf's feet lay two dying humans, their bodies riddled with wounds and stained red with blood.
Yet they still writhed in agony, their eyes wide as they stared at Chu Donglin atop White Wolf, hatred burning fiercely within them.
"Nyarlathotep... how could you..."
The Third-Stage Zombies were not within their concern.
However, when the tide of Zombies surged into the base and they attempted to fight back, a cold girl who leaped from White Wolf's back struck them down in an instant, leaving them gravely injured.
The level of power exceeded their imagination.
They found it hard to believe that even if they had been transformed into Zombies by the virus, such a powerful Zombie... could it really be seen in places far from Jiang Hai, the origin of the virus?
Even without Chu Donglin lifting a finger, they were swiftly slain by snow, unable to abandon their bodies to escape.
Under the cold moonlight, Chu Donglin looked down at the two monsters clad in human skin with a cold gaze, showing no sympathy whatsoever.
"You are the followers of Cthulhu, Father Dagon and Mother Goddess Hydra of the Deep Diver? You really have gone through a lot to chase me all the way here."
Chu Donglin said indifferently, "You are quite loyal; even after Cthulhu's death, you didn't scatter like birds and beasts... Heh... for this alone, even as monsters, you deserve some praise."
The ground began to shake violently.
Then the earth cracked open, and stones flew as a roaring dragon rose up beside Chu Donglin.
"The commendation is over; now we should settle the accounts."
He looked at the two monsters draped in human skin and said coldly, "You have caused the death of Sasha, and I should seek justice for her."
The roaring Earth Dragon lunged toward the two on the ground. Its body, made of twisting and grinding earth and stone, would instantly crush them into a bloody pulp once it enveloped them.
The two shouted in anger.
"Nyarlathotep! The Father God will return! You will eventually die in your own blood! Cthulhu awaits you in dreams!"
In the next moment, the roaring Earth Dragon descended upon them, engulfing their bodies.
Blood splattered from the Earth Dragon as it shattered upon hitting the ground. All that remained was a scene of bricks stained red with blood, and the two were nowhere to be seen.
Standing coldly atop the White Wolf, bathed in the cool moonlight, Chu Donglin's expression was exceptionally indifferent.
"Cthulhu? An Evil God long dead, its essence consumed. What can it do for you? A bunch of ignorant insect tamers."
Then, Chu Donglin commanded the White Wolf to turn and leave behind the carnage, heading toward the outskirts of the base.
"Xue, we're leaving."
As soon as his voice fell, Xue's figure returned to the top of the White Wolf, standing alongside Chu Donglin.
Holding Chu Donglin's hand, Shishi asked, "Daddy, where are we going next?"
Chu Donglin gazed toward the mountains in the east and slowly exhaled a breath of turbid air.
"To Jiang Hai."
Jiang Hai, the largest city in the country, is located by the sea, with the Pacific Ocean just beyond its shores.
On ordinary days, countless flights and ships arrive here from all over the world, bringing people and goods, making it one of the most bustling metropolises globally.
However, this once-thriving city has now become a desolate place known as Silence.
The streets that were once filled with life now only see staggering Zombies wandering aimlessly, searching for any signs of living humans.
Yet within this city, there are no survivors left; they have all been hunted down and devoured by the Zombies.
Unlike other parts of the world, Jiang Hai is the epicenter of the viral disaster. When that massive meteor fell, it not only spread a virus across the globe but also dropped some crystallized forms of the virus into the city.
Many fortunate individuals who came into contact with these crystals transformed into terrifyingly powerful High-Level Zombies.
Third-Stage, Fourth Tier, even Fifth-Stage... these horrifying monsters that human Survivors in other cities could hardly imagine roam in packs here, in significant numbers.
If not for the human army gathering here and using technological power to fend off the initial Zombie onslaught, it is likely that humanity in Jiang Hai would have been wiped out within three days of the apocalypse.
Despite this, what was once a super metropolis with a population of thirty million residents and even more unregistered migrants now has only about two hundred thousand Survivors remaining.
Under military protection, they established their own Survivor Base not far outside the city.
However, even this hard-won Survivor Base has been abandoned and destroyed several times. The current base where these human Survivors reside is newly constructed.
Although the threat of High-Level Zombies is not to be underestimated, hidden within Jiang Hai is a Horrific Monster that neither Zombies nor humans can contend with together.
Landwalker.
However, Landwalker only occasionally wanders out; otherwise, Jiang Hai would have been destroyed long ago.
January 1, 2006, 5:00 AM.
At this moment, it was the darkest time before dawn, with dark clouds obscuring even the moonlight.
On the Barren Land, Lengku sat coldly in the forest, its icy gaze fixed on the highway beyond the trees.
Around it gathered several other High-Level Zombies.
A total of Six-Headed Five-Tier Zombies and thirty-nine Fourth-Stage Zombies—such power was enough to sweep away any enemy.
Yet in Jiang Hai, the factions among the High-Level Zombies were clearly defined. They were wary of each other, guarding against the possibility of being stabbed in the back.
After all, Zombies evolved by devouring their kind.
It was almost unimaginable to see six Zombies gathering together to act in unison.
But in this world, there are no eternal enemies or friends; there are only everlasting interests.
When interests become a necessity, these High-Level Zombies, who usually remain on guard against one another and even harbor mutual hatred, could not help but come together to pursue a common goal.
“Has Ban Guozhi not arrived yet?”
Chen Xiaofeng chewed on a stalk of grass, his face filled with impatience.
“Why is this old man so slow? Can’t he hurry up? Doesn’t he know I’m waiting for him here?”
The other Fifth-Stage Zombies glanced at him, remaining silent.
Here, the Fourth-Stage Zombie had no right to speak, and the other Fifth-Stage Zombies couldn't be bothered with his complaints, choosing to stay quiet.
Feeling a bit foolish, Chen Xiaofeng shrugged and settled into a more comfortable position.
"You guys are really boring. Just sitting there in silence... Do you think that makes you look cold-hearted and cool? Hmph... Come on, we're all just a bunch of monsters now, no longer human. It's rare to have a chance to sit together like this peacefully; let’s share our experiences of being monsters."
"Hey, Lengku, Zhao Zifeng, what do you two fellows think about becoming Zombies? Don't be so cold, come on."
This seemingly restless High-Level Zombie asked playfully, but the two Fifth-Stage Zombies he addressed merely shot him a cold glance and remained silent.
At that moment, one of the Fourth-Stage Zombies suddenly stood up. "Target detected."
This was a twisted creature resembling a monster, with two long tendrils sprouting from its head that occasionally twitched lightly.
"The target is three miles away, four tanks, and over five hundred living humans detected."
The tendrils on the Zombie's head twitched as it spoke in a mechanical and monotonous voice.
All the Zombies stood up.
"Hey! Old Man Ban is finally here! Great! Last time he dared to mess with me; this time I’ll settle old scores along with new grievances... Hahaha..."
Amidst Chen Xiaofeng's triumphant laughter, the group of Zombies became alert, their eyes fixed on a stretch of highway beyond the forest, waiting for the target to come into view.
Beep—beep—beep—beep—
Liu Mengying listened to the beeping sound coming from the other end of the phone, remaining silent for a long time before finally lifting her head with a solemn expression.
She gazed out the window, where thick dark clouds obscured the sky, hiding the stars and moon behind them, plunging the earth into absolute darkness.
A snowstorm was approaching.
The air was filled with an unsettling sense of pressure.
However, what truly troubled her was the sudden disconnection of the call.
The military's communication satellite signals were incredibly powerful; the only things capable of forcibly cutting off communication signals were high-powered military jamming devices or the unusually evolved Fourth-Stage Zombie under Jiang Hai and Chen Xiaofeng.
Liu Mengying donned her military uniform, pushed open the door to her bedroom, and walked straight out of her building.
The United Front Department was right next to her building. She entered the hall and issued orders to the three communication soldiers who were organizing documents.
"Immediately send someone to investigate Chen Xiaofeng's whereabouts. Check if they are still operating within Jianghai City's territory. I want results in ten minutes."
"Also, issue a rallying order. We need to go support General Ban Guozhi right away."
Her expression darkened as she looked at the ominous clouds drifting nearby and said coldly, "They may have been ambushed." (To be continued...)
