Ban Guozhi returned from outside with a look of disbelief on his face. He settled back into his seat and glanced at the girl standing across from him, who appeared exceptionally obedient. He sighed.
"Girl, you’re really something else. If you didn’t want to see me smoke, you should have reminded me when I took out the cigarette. Instead, you waited until I had it lit and was about to exhale before saying anything... Were you trying to mess with me?"
Keara paused for a moment, her expression innocent and pure.
"Grandpa, you've misunderstood me. How could Keara ever play tricks on you? Respecting the elderly and loving the young is a traditional virtue of our culture. Keara is the most obedient; she would never tease anyone."
"Pah! If I believe you again, I might as well be a pig."
Ban Guozhi scoffed, clearly having learned his lesson.
However, he didn’t want to dwell on this matter with the girl any longer and redirected the conversation back to the original topic.
"Alright, let’s continue discussing those monsters in Jiang Hai."
As he spoke, he instinctively reached for a cigarette, but this time his hand froze as it entered the pocket of his military coat.
Across from him, the girl looked at him with an innocent and kind expression.
Ban Guozhi reluctantly withdrew his hand, refusing to fall for it again.
Yet sitting there without something in his mouth still left him feeling somewhat uncomfortable.
After a moment of hesitation, he suddenly remembered the gummy candy he had offered to the girl earlier, which she had refused. It felt like a lifeline, so he quickly pulled out the candy.
He quickly peeled off the candy wrapper and chewed on the piece of soft candy that he usually disregarded, a look of enjoyment spreading across his face.
The girl across from him, Ling Er, curled her lip in disdain.
"Big Smoker is really pathetic."
The old man's body stiffened, and he looked somewhat embarrassed.
Clearing his throat, he composed himself and adopted a serious expression, as if lecturing a subordinate.
"Ahem... let's continue discussing our previous topic."
"Uh... where were we?"
The girl looked at him with innocent eyes and sweetly added, "We were talking about how impressive the monsters in Jiang Hai are."
"Oh right, the monsters in Jiang Hai are indeed impressive."
Ban Guozhi slapped his forehead, finally regaining his train of thought as he continued.
"I mentioned that the monsters in Jiang Hai are very formidable. However, you questioned why, despite their strength, we still refuse to leave and instead choose to stay in Jiang Hai and confront those Zombies head-on. This brings us to the origin of the Zombies."
With a serious expression, Ban Guozhi stated, "You know that the source of the Zombies comes from a virus that humanity has never encountered before. But where did this virus originate? It couldn't have just sprung from a rock, could it? Moreover, even the most powerful virus couldn't possibly contaminate the entire world in an instant and turn everyone into Zombies... Girl, how did this virus come about?"
Before Keara could respond, Ling Er, who was awake on the bed beside them, excitedly raised her hand and shouted.
"I know, I know, let me handle it."
"Oh? You know?"
Ban Guozhi was genuinely surprised this time.
He looked at the girl who had just woken up. He sized her up for a moment and couldn't help but laugh, "Since you know, go ahead."
"Uh-huh," the girl Ling Er nodded repeatedly, rubbing her eyes and yawning as she spoke. "The virus that causes zombies was secretly developed by a company called Umbrella. They created this virus because they wanted to use this biochemical agent to engineer the strongest artificial soldiers."
"But they didn't expect their research to go wrong. The humans transformed by the virus indeed became incredibly powerful, but they lost all rationality, turning into mindless creatures that only knew how to feed on flesh and attack any living person nearby."
"This is the origin of zombies."
"After that, the virus from Umbrella leaked, causing a terrifying disaster that eventually spread worldwide, turning countless people into zombies. This is what we see now: the vast majority of humanity has become zombies, with only a small number of people surviving safely, though no one knows when they might be killed by zombies... right?"
Ban Guozhi looked at the girl with a blank expression. "Where did you get all this nonsense from?"
The girl giggled as she sat up on the bed. "From books! This is a very famous story from over a decade ago. Haven't you read it, old man?"
Ban Guozhi shook his head. "Of course I've read that story, but what I read today has nothing to do with your book; I'm talking about the true origin of zombies."
With that, his expression turned serious as he raised a finger.
"Five months ago, our country detected a planet hurtling toward Earth at high speed. The planet isn't very large; even if it were to collide with Earth, after burning up in the atmosphere, the remaining mass would be quite small when it finally hit the ground."
"But unfortunately, the location where the planet fell poses a significant problem."
"Its landing point is in Jiang Hai—the largest city center in our country. If that planet were to truly crash down, the terrifying impact would instantly destroy a third of Jianghai City Center, resulting in millions of casualties and severe injuries. The economy of Jiang Hai would suffer unimaginable devastation."
"Thus, we launched several intercept missiles, intending to blow the planet apart in outer space before it could threaten us."
"But we failed."
"The mysterious planet evaded all our launched intercept missiles as if it had a life of its own. Even when it entered the atmosphere, our air defense system, capable of taking down intercontinental missiles, was utterly ineffective against it."
"As expected, it fell into Jiang Hai. Fortunately, it seemed to control its descent speed, so when it landed, the impact was not significant—it only destroyed a few kilometers of urban area."
"Then, after the planet's fall, a terrifying virus descended upon the entire world in an instant, turning countless people into zombies."
"Of course, as a military force with its own emergency evacuation measures, we initially suffered heavy casualties but quickly regrouped our strength and rushed into the city to maintain order and rescue the wounded, attempting to regain composure amidst the horrific disaster."
"Then we witnessed for the first time horrific monsters crawling out from the meteorite crater created by the planet's fall. Their massive bodies towered dozens of stories high, resembling mythical beasts known as Evil Gods."
"No living being could escape before those monsters. We unleashed our countless weapons of Madness. Almost every weapon at our disposal was used except for large-scale destructive weapons like nuclear arms."
"But there was no effect; those monsters were more terrifying than we could have imagined."
"However, those monsters seemed devoid of intelligence, wandering mindlessly and often returning to the meteorite crater to sleep. The truly frightening aspect was the mutated zombies that emerged during the disaster."
"The zombies in Jiang Hai are unlike those in Wocheng; that place is the origin of the entire Zombie Virus. Countless zombies possessed immense power right from their first mutation. Many mutated into Third-Stage, Fourth Tier, or even Fifth-Stage Zombies wandering through the city. The zombies there do not start from zero tier like those in other places."
"We gathered all the remaining forces of our troops, yet we could only retreat from the city limits and establish our own Survivor Base outside, standing against those Fifth-Stage Zombies."
"As for why we refuse to leave despite facing such a harsh environment, it is because of the unique nature of Jiang Hai."
"I've been there; it is the origin of the Zombies. All the Fifth-Stage Zombies are trying to steal the power of those Outsider Monsters. Although those monsters that descended from outer space are terrifying, they are merely trapped near the Meteorite Crater and rarely venture far. They occasionally come out for a stroll but lack any intelligence, so they aren't much of a threat."
"However, those intelligent Fifth-Stage Zombies are entirely different. Their complete Madness and hysteria have transformed them into lunatics through the virus, and they all strive to establish a terrestrial kingdom for Zombies."
"Their goal is fundamentally to annihilate all living beings on Earth, turning every creature into a Zombie. With our current technological capabilities, we can suppress the Fifth-Stage Zombies, but if those Mad Fifth-Stage Zombies manage to steal the powers of those Outsider Monsters, then the destruction of the world would be an inevitable future."
"After all, global communication systems have collapsed, and only a few military Satellites are barely operational. As for Nuclear Weapons of that caliber, we have lost the ability to use them and cannot compete with the High-Level Zombies from the Outsiders."
"The only silver lining is that while those Fifth-Stage Zombies attempt to steal power from those Outsider Monsters, their actions create enough noise to alert people dozens of kilometers away, allowing us to arrive in time to intervene."
With that, Ban Guozhi spread his hands and looked at the two girls across from him, who were now dumbfounded. He made his final summary.
"This is why we remain in Jiang Hai and refuse to leave... We must contain those Fifth-Stage Zombies and prevent them from becoming stronger." (To be continued...)
