The corpse.
A twisted corpse.
When Wu and the others returned to the square, they were confronted by a grotesquely contorted body.
The blood-soaked corpse was riddled with intersecting wounds, as if it had been dragged through a thicket of thorns, exuding a horrifying sense of dread.
Thick, dark red blood splattered across the square, resembling the filth spewed forth by some malevolent creature.
Among the crisscrossing wounds, one could even see the exposed subcutaneous tissue, vibrant muscles laid bare to the air.
The gaping wounds in the skin resembled wide-open mouths, eerily mocking Wu and his companions as they approached.
As they drew nearer, the face of the corpse became obscured by the myriad of scars, but the familiar clothing and the fallen Light Machine Gun still made it possible to identify the individual.
"Datang?!"
A group of people stood in shock around their companion's body. Even though they were warriors who had fought their way through the blood-soaked Corpse Mountain of this apocalyptic world, they still felt a sense of discomfort at such a gruesome sight.
Wu knelt down silently to examine his companion's body and soon discovered the most fatal injury.
"His organs..."
He quietly lifted the torn fabric from the corpse's abdomen, gazing into the empty cavity within, his brow furrowing tightly.
"His organs... are gone?"
This discovery was filled with an eerie atmosphere.
In this apocalyptic world, even the most ferocious monsters would not simply devour internal organs without consuming other parts of the body.
Zombies are not that picky; even High-Level Zombies would eagerly consume humans whole rather than just eating a portion of their entrails.
The behavior of only eating internal organs while leaving the rest of the body untouched resembled that of certain Evil Spirits with peculiar tastes.
Such speculation sent a chill down their spines.
Wu continued to examine his companion's corpse before standing up.
"Let's take Da Tang's body with us. We should head back first. This place is strange; it's better not to wander around recklessly. We'll wait until we can ask the boss when we get back."
No one opposed Wu's decision.
They silently designated two people to carry their companion's body, preparing to leave.
Then suddenly, someone called out.
"Hey? Where's Li Ming? How come that fellow is missing? Wasn't he just with us?"
This voice from the crowd made everyone, who was ready to leave, stop in their tracks.
They looked around in shock and indeed found that one person was missing from their ranks.
The young man named Li Ming was not very old. In fact, among them, he could only be considered the youngest. However, after fighting side by side for a long time, they had all become familiar with one another.
At that moment, someone noticed his disappearance. When everyone became aware of it, they indeed realized that another person was missing from their midst.
Wu furrowed his brow.
The unease in his heart grew more intense.
Especially with the distorted corpse of the Tang soldier right before him, the fact that one more person was missing from their group filled him with a surreal sense of horror, as if countless ferocious monsters were lurking in the shadows, waiting to pounce and drag someone into the darkness to be torn apart.
"Captain... what should we do now?"
The sudden turn of events left everyone bewildered.
They had all been moving together, and no one had strayed from the group along the way. But how could a living person as large as Li Ming just vanish like that?
This incomprehensible phenomenon made them instinctively look towards their leader.
Amidst the glances from his companions, Wu tightened his brow. He scanned all the members of the team, counting their numbers and confirming their presence.
Thirty-five people.
At that moment, there were a total of thirty-five individuals gathered around him.
Including himself, there were thirty-six.
When they arrived here, there had been thirty-eight people in the group.
Now, as they prepared to leave, only thirty-five companions remained by his side—two were missing.
"Captain, are we going to look for Li Ming?"
Amidst the urging of his companions, Wu pondered for a moment and made a decision.
"We currently have thirty-six people, which means we can form twelve teams of three. Let's spread out in the villa to search for Li Ming. If we find anything—whether it's a monster or Li Ming himself—we must notify everyone immediately. If we don't find anything, we will return here and prepare to head back to the base in no more than fifteen minutes."
With that, Wu organized everyone into groups, and soon the twelve teams disappeared in various directions throughout the villa.
"Li Ming! Where are you? Can you hear me?"
"Li Ming, get your ass out here! If I find you hiding, I'm going to give you a good beating! Come out now, do you hear me?"
"Li Ming, hurry up! Where did you run off to? You're delaying everyone; aren't you afraid the boss will come looking for you?"
The once-silent villa echoed with Wu and his team's calls.
However, the companion named Li Ming never showed up.
Before leaving the square, Wu instinctively glanced at his watch.
The time was six fifteen; the winter light was already beginning to fade.
He planned to return to the base by six thirty. If they hadn't found Li Ming by then, they would have no choice but to abandon their missing companion and come back to search again tomorrow.
As the team leader, he couldn't put the rest of his companions in danger over one person's life or safety.
The darkness of the apocalypse was an insurmountable disaster for all Survivors.
In the daylight, those lurking Second-Stage Zombies would emerge from their hiding places, dancing wildly throughout the city. Faced with these bizarrely evolved Second-Stage Zombies, the firepower of this team alone could not guarantee absolute safety.
As a member of the Search Team, Wu and his two companions were headed towards the Lotus Garden. Here, clean water floated on pools adorned with lotus leaves.
However, the winter lotus leaves had turned yellow and wilted, resembling wrinkled skin, much like the aged peel of an orange, devoid of any beauty.
Strolling through the Lotus Garden, listening to the gentle sound of flowing water and watching the empty lake where yellowed lotus leaves floated, Wu felt a strange sensation arise within him.
He vaguely sensed that something was off, yet when he tried to think deeper, he could recall nothing.
“Li Ming! Come out! If you keep running around like this, the captain is going to get angry!”
“Li Ming, if you don’t come out now, we’re not going to look for you anymore!”
The calls from his companions echoed around him, high and low. Yet that strange feeling in Wu's heart only intensified.
He felt as though he had discovered something, but when he tried to think about it carefully, he found nothing at all. (To be continued...)
