In the history of humanity, countless individuals have passionately praised the charm and innocence of girls through their poetic verses.
These intricate and beautiful poems are an indelible light in the long river of human history.
Ah, Lolita, my light of life...
Indeed, the affection for lovely girls is a profound emotion shared by all humanity.
In this world, no one harbors feelings of disgust towards charming girls.
Yet, when the adorable girl leaped into Chu Donglin's arms, his body stiffened.
Her body clung to him with an affectionate embrace, her delicate arms wrapped tightly around his back, pressing her tender form closely against him.
She gently squirmed.
“Daddy, Shishi misses you so much.”
Like a spoiled kitten, the girl wiggled softly in Chu Donglin's embrace.
She rubbed her cheek against his chest, emitting soft, comfortable sounds. “Why have you been gone for so long? What happened?”
It seemed just like before.
Whenever Chu Donglin returned home late, the girl would cling to him in this same affectionate manner, expressing her dissatisfaction through such endearing behavior.
However, as he inhaled the faint scent of Zombie that lingered on the girl, Chu Donglin knew that everything had changed.
Fifteen days had been enough time for too many things to happen, far more than he could have anticipated.
His trembling hands gently wrapped around the girl's waist.
Then, Chu Donglin crouched down, bringing his gaze level with Shishi's.
His hand softly stroked the girl's head, as he had done countless times before, combing through her hair.
The girl smiled shyly, revealing a comfortable and content expression, just like always.
But everything had truly changed.
Those exquisite eyes, as beautiful and captivating as rubies, held a chilling meaning that made Chu Donglin's heart feel like it was plunging into an icy abyss.
"Shishi..."
His hand trembled as it caressed the girl's head, his lips moved silently, filled with anguish.
"Why has it come to this..."
He had only been away for fifteen days; why had the girl he had always protected turned into a zombie?
What had happened during that time? Wasn't Snow supposed to be by her side protecting her? Why, despite having Snow's protection, did Shishi still become a zombie? Had a powerful and overwhelming zombie attacked the building while he was unconscious? Had she been infected by the virus?
Chu Donglin widened his eyes, desperately searching for any signs of a struggle on the girl’s body.
Yet there were no visible wounds on her. Even this building, which could have been a battlefield, remained intact; there was not a single trace of damage anywhere.
Chu Donglin suddenly turned to the girl behind him.
"Xue, what on earth happened? How did Shishi end up like this? Didn't I tell you to come back and protect her? Is this how you protect her?"
Amidst his furious roar, the girl in his arms shrank back slightly, startled by Chu Donglin's agitated emotions.
"Daddy... Daddy..."
She reached out and gently tugged at Chu Donglin's sleeve, speaking softly, "Don't blame Snow Sister; it was me who made her do this."
At the girl's explanation, Chu Donglin paused, as if he understood something.
"You... you turned into a Zombie because of Xue? How is that possible? High-Level Zombies don't have the ability to infect anymore, right? How could she turn you into a Zombie?"
In his astonishment, Xue calmly walked in front of him, as if she hadn't just been scolded by Chu Donglin. There was not a trace of dissatisfaction on her face.
She reached out a hand and gently grasped Chu Donglin's hand.
Then the girl closed her eyes, and the powerful aura belonging to a Second-Stage Zombie spread out unabashedly.
But what caught Chu Donglin's attention was not that but rather the girl's current state.
"Xue, you... how did you become weaker?"
Chu Donglin's expression was filled with shock.
The once powerful girl had been nearly at the level of a Second-Stage Zombie; with just a couple of Evolution Crystals, she could break through to Third-Stage at any time. Just her presence alone could intimidate over ninety percent of Second-Stage Zombies into not daring to move recklessly.
However, at this moment, the aura surrounding the girl was significantly weaker than before, even less potent than that of the White Wolf, indicating a substantial drop in her strength.
This strange situation left Chu Donglin puzzled.
He had only ever seen Zombies grow stronger and evolve further; he had never witnessed a Zombie's power diminishing.
Before Chu Donglin could continue his inquiries, a drop of bright red blood suddenly oozed from the girl's fingertip.
Bright red like ink, stunningly beautiful like blood.
Chu Donglin was taken aback.
Within that drop of blood, which was as clear and transparent as a blood diamond, he sensed a chilling and frenzied aura.
That sensation was something he had only felt when confronting a Zombie's Evolution Crystal.
It seemed that what he faced now was not merely a drop of blood but rather a highly concentrated form of Zombie Virus, filled with indescribable pathogens.
Feeling the familiar aura within the blood drop, Chu Donglin raised his head in astonishment, glancing at Xue and then at the girl beside him. A bizarre hypothesis began to take shape in his mind.
"You split the energy from your Evolution Crystal to feed Shishi? You turned her into a Zombie?"
Xue nodded.
"Why did you do that?"
The girl pointed to the corner of the room where there had once been food prepared by Chu Donglin for Shishi, now empty and desolate.
However, it was clear that over the course of fifteen days, Girl had already consumed all the limited food available, leaving not a trace behind.
Now, in the corner of the room, only the clean floor remained empty, with nothing else around.
"After you left, Shishi quickly finished... the food, and then she was very hungry... I had no choice but to let her become like us, so... she wouldn't be hungry anymore."
The girl spoke with occasional pauses, while Chu Donglin remained silent.
He looked at the obedient girl beside him and then at the cold-faced young woman, finally calming his emotions.
"You knew beforehand that doing this would preserve Shishi's consciousness and prevent her from becoming one of those mindless Zombies on the street?"
Xue nodded.
"How did you know?"
The girl's answer was brief: "I just felt it."
Chu Donglin was at a loss for words.
Indeed, despite having evolved to the Second Stage, the somewhat dull-witted girl still fell far short compared to Chu Donglin in terms of intelligence and combat power.
However, this was merely a difference in combat ability.
Even though Chu Donglin's true combat strength far exceeded that of the dull-witted girl Xue, when it came to being a Zombie, it seemed that this girl named Xue was much more qualified than Chu Donglin.
At least she had been a genuine Zombie from the beginning, experiencing the normal evolutionary process of a Zombie.
Compared to Chu Donglin, who retains his intelligence and consciousness and appears no different from an ordinary human, the girl named Snow is vastly different.
Perhaps retaining his intelligence allows Chu Donglin to navigate many predicaments with ease, granting him formidable combat abilities and a keen awareness of the slightest changes on the battlefield, enabling him to seize every opportunity that favors him.
However, his instincts as a Zombie have always been suppressed by his human consciousness.
Although Chu Donglin is a Zombie, he has always lingered at the threshold of Zombie existence, caught between the classifications of human and Zombie, unable to fully step into either realm.
He cannot allow himself to be controlled by the instincts of a Zombie, which is why he naturally lacks many of the intuitive traits common among Zombies.
For instance, he cannot be unaware of the method used by the girl to artificially create Mutated Zombies using energy viruses that split brain crystals while retaining the target's human consciousness. Yet, due to his insufficient understanding of the subconscious of Zombies, he remains oblivious.
In fact, aside from the initial period after becoming a Zombie when his weakened strength prevented him from fully suppressing his hunger instincts, he has since grown stronger, pushing those instincts to their limits.
He has no appetite for human flesh; even when hunting other Zombies, his consumption of Evolution Crystals is more about becoming stronger rather than driven by the primal cravings of an Ordinary Zombie.
He is unlike ordinary Zombies and has never shared any similarities with Mutated Zombies—except for their physical structure.
However, with gain comes loss. Chu Donglin has managed to preserve his true self against the onslaught of Zombie instincts and bloodthirsty desires; his consciousness and character remain unaffected. He resists everything that belongs to being a Zombie, and thus, what belongs to Zombies also resists him. Consequently, Chu Donglin inevitably lacks certain attributes inherent to Zombies.
Looking at the girl before him, who seems no different from usual, Chu Donglin took a deep breath, gently patted Shishi's head, and stood up.
"Shishi, do you remember what happened before?"
The girl nodded repeatedly, indicating that she still remembers.
"Do you remember your parents?"
After a pause, Chu Donglin added, "Your original parents."
The girl shook her head.
"Then do you remember where I rescued you from?"
The girl thought for a moment. Even though so much time had passed, there was still some fear lingering within her. "I... I remember..."
"Very good..."
Chu Donglin slowly exhaled, gently patting the girl's head before stepping aside.
"Tomorrow, I'll take you back to see your father. I've set up a grave for him there."
Pausing at the doorway to the bedroom, Chu Donglin glanced back at the girl in the living room and added, "You need to say goodbye to your father... one last farewell as a human." (To be continued...)
