"Did... did it explode?"
Liu Xiner asked hesitantly, a look of confusion on her face.
Earlier, due to the angle, she hadn't seen how Chu Donglin had repelled the White Wolf.
Standing at the street corner, all she could hear was the sudden shattering of glass and the White Wolf's agonized cries.
Everything that happened in between was blocked from her view by the wall at the corner of the street, leaving her completely in the dark.
As she hesitated over whether to disregard Chu Donglin's instructions and go take a look, Chu Donglin had already rushed back like the wind and jumped onto his motorcycle.
Thus, when the terrifying explosion sound suddenly erupted behind her, Liu Xiner looked utterly bewildered.
She couldn't help but glance at Chu Donglin. "Brother-in-law, did you plant explosives back there?"
"Explosives?"
Chu Donglin paused for a moment, caught off guard by the girl's unfounded speculation, and couldn't help but chuckle. "What explosives? You know that Second-Stage Zombies are afraid of sunlight. I just used a gas canister to burn off that fellow's fur to drive it away. Who would have thought the gas canister would explode..."
After thinking for a moment, Chu Donglin turned the motorcycle around, taking Liu Xiner back along the route. "Let's go see if that fellow is dead. If it is, that would be best."
In fact, what Chu Donglin was really thinking was that if that White Wolf had truly died, then its Energy Core would surely be up for grabs.
This White Wolf's level of evolution was nearly comparable to Snow and was on the verge of evolving to Third-Stage. If he could consume its Energy Crystal, it would undoubtedly greatly enhance Chu Donglin's power—he couldn't let this opportunity slip away.
When they returned to the long street, Chu Donglin and Liu Xiner were both shocked by the sight before them.
In the center of the street, where the explosion had occurred, there was now a massive crater.
The concrete pavement was shattered into pieces, and countless clumps of dirt were scattered everywhere. The soil within the crater had even been scorched to a deep black color by the intense heat.
The residential buildings and shops on both sides of the street were not spared either; the terrifying shockwave and blast directly shattered all the glass, leaving a sea of shards on the ground.
Even the second-floor windows of a nearby restaurant had been completely blown out, exposing the interior hall to the sunlight.
The numerous abandoned cars on the street now presented a dismal sight.
The vehicles closest to the explosion had been reduced to twisted wrecks, with their metal frames turned into charred heaps.
It was clear that when the gas canister exploded, the terrifying heat and shockwave triggered a chain reaction, affecting not only other gas canisters but also the cars parked along the roadside.
With so many explosives detonating simultaneously, it was no wonder such a catastrophic scene unfolded.
Yet, standing at the street corner, Liu Xiner and Chu Donglin were left speechless.
Aside from being astonished by the power of the explosion, what surprised them even more was that the White Wolf was nowhere to be seen.
Given the formidable physique of a Second-Stage Zombie, it was impossible for it to be obliterated in such an explosion.
Moreover, the Zombie's Energy Core was nearly indestructible, and there was not a trace of Energy Core energy left at the scene.
Chu Donglin looked at the empty street, feeling somewhat speechless.
It seemed that although the explosion was grand, its power was insufficient to kill the Second-Stage White Wolf, which had already escaped.
While Chu Donglin knew that the White Wolf must be in dire straits now, likely severely injured, not killing it meant it was still alive.
With the terrifying power of that White Wolf, coupled with the fact that it had been heavily wounded this time, their next encounter would likely end in a fight to the death.
"Let's go."
He patted Xing'er on the shoulder and sighed as he returned to the motorcycle.
He had initially thought that the Energy Crystal would be within his grasp, but now it seemed to have slipped away, leaving him somewhat disheartened.
If it weren't for Xing'er needing protection by his side, Chu Donglin would have chased after it long ago, taking advantage of the giant wolf's injury to finish it off completely.
However, they were currently in the city center, surrounded by Zombies—the most densely populated area of Wocheng's Zombie outbreak.
For the time being, Chu Donglin couldn't find a truly safe place to settle Xing'er. There was no way he could leave her here alone while he went off to hunt down the White Wolf.
So even though a great opportunity lay before him, Chu Donglin had no choice but to reluctantly give it up.
"Forget it, let's just move on and try to reach your house before dark."
Chu Donglin said this as he started the motorcycle.
Then...
Watching the motorcycle that had just started stall after three seconds, Chu Donglin was taken aback.
"Huh? Is it broken?"
He tried to start it again, but this time there was no response at all.
After struggling for several minutes, Chu Donglin looked at the motorcycle that had been with him for so long, feeling a bit speechless. "It really is broken..."
Indeed, the last time he was chased by Tyrant, the intense jumps and sharp turns had taken a toll on the vehicle.
Chu Donglin sighed in resignation and decided to abandon the motorcycle. "Xing'er, let's walk."
Liu Xiner paused for a moment, feeling a bit helpless. "But... walking will be really slow."
The reason she had asked Chu Donglin to take her to find her father was that he could navigate through the city at high speed on his motorcycle.
While this would attract many First-Stage Zombies, it also minimized the risk of being attacked by Second-Stage Zombies.
After all, the Second-Stage Zombies were resting in their respective lairs. Even if they sensed the motorcycle speeding by and wanted to attack, they would struggle to catch up with the rapidly moving vehicle, not to mention the burning sunlight that harmed them.
By the time they emerged from their nests to attempt an assault on Chu Donglin, he had already long distanced himself from their sight while riding his motorcycle.
Given Chu Donglin's displayed combat prowess, as long as he did not encounter a Second-Stage Zombie, the First-Stage Zombies posed little threat.
Minimizing any trouble for Chu Donglin was the main reason Liu Xiner ultimately decided to plead with him.
However, now that the motorcycle was broken, the two could only walk. This not only slowed their pace significantly but also greatly increased their danger.
If they attracted the attention of a Second-Stage Zombie while navigating through the streets, it would undoubtedly spell disaster.
The girl, unsure of Chu Donglin's exact combat abilities, hesitated for less than half a minute before she grabbed his arm as he turned to leave.
"Brother-in-law, let's… let's go back."
She looked at Chu Donglin, feeling a mix of reluctance and dissatisfaction at giving up so soon after setting out, but she voiced her thoughts clearly.
"Let's head back to the camp first. If there's another opportunity later, we can go look for my dad then. For now, let's just give up."
