“Snow Sister, what happened to Dad today? He seems so happy. Did something happen?”
In the living room, Shishi asked with confusion as she listened to the cheerful humming coming from the kitchen.
That joyful mood was so evident, even through the kitchen door, that even a girl like her could tell that today, Chu Donglin was different from usual.
Normally, every time Chu Donglin came home, his mood always seemed a bit heavy.
After all, in this dark apocalypse where survival was a constant struggle, living each day with the looming threat of misfortune and death, it was rare for anyone to maintain a cheerful demeanor.
The separations from family and friends, everything once held dear suddenly shattered. That feeling was akin to someone being subjected to the cruelest torture, having all their loved ones executed, leaving them alone in a desolate world filled with monsters, living day by day without certainty.
Such feelings were enough to make anyone suffer.
Even though Chu Donglin tried to hide his emotions, not wanting those negative feelings to affect Shishi, the perceptive girl still sensed something was off.
Although Shishi could no longer remember much from before, she always cared deeply about Chu Donglin. Her concern for him was as pure and untainted as his concern for her.
For so long, the only time Chu Donglin had shown a genuine smile was when he brought back snow and helped her clean up and dress nicely, watching her in that neat outfit.
But today’s unusual smile from Chu Donglin was so apparent that even the dullest person could notice it; how much more so for Shishi, who had always been attentive to him?
As soon as he got home, Chu Donglin couldn’t help but scoop up Shishi and spin her around several times with laughter. His inexplicable joy felt like he had found some treasure.
To be honest, this unusual behavior from Chu Donglin made Shishi feel a bit scared; she didn’t understand what had happened.
She reached out and gently tugged at his sleeve, seeking an answer.
However, the girl sitting in front of her remained frozen and stiff like a statue, offering no response to her inquiry.
The girl's reaction was somewhat disheartening.
However, her worries were soon addressed.
"Shishi, I'm going out tonight. Can you and your Snow Sister stay at Home?"
Chu Donglin walked out of the kitchen with a plate of food, setting it on the dining table as he spoke to the girl.
Shishi paused for a moment, surprised. "Dad, you're going out?"
"Yes, I found out where a friend is, and I need to check on her, so I’ll be out tonight."
"But... Dad, isn't it dangerous outside at night?"
Shishi looked at Chu Donglin with concern. "There are Second-Stage Zombies everywhere at night. It's really unsafe to go out casually."
"Don't worry. Those Second-Stage Zombies aren't even close to being able to kill me. If I didn't want to avoid trouble, I wouldn't be hiding in Home every night."
Gently ruffling the girl's hair, Chu Donglin smiled and said, "So just stay at Home and wait for me to come back. I'll have Snow stay behind to protect you."
The girl frowned and hugged Chu Donglin's arm. "Isn't Snow going with you?"
"I’m going alone, right? I need Snow here to protect you. With Zombies roaming around at night, how can I feel at ease leaving you alone at Home?"
"But I’m not comfortable with you going out alone," the girl tightened her grip on Chu Donglin's hand, looking as if she wouldn’t let go. "If you really want to go, then wait until it’s bright outside. That way, Shishi definitely won’t stop you."
"Don't you understand the saying about long nights leading to more dreams? Girl, do you really have so little faith in me?"
With a playful tap on her forehead, Chu Donglin chuckled. "Come on, I'm quite strong. A few Second-Stage Zombies trying to take me down? That's just a joke."
But no matter what Chu Donglin did, the Girl stubbornly refused to let go, clinging tightly to his arm and not allowing him to leave.
"Alright, alright, you win."
Chu Donglin had no choice but to raise his hands in surrender. "What do you want me to do for you to let me go?"
The Girl cutely scrunched her nose and huffed, "I want you to take me with you, Daddy."
"Are you serious? It's so chaotic outside, and you want me to bring you along?" Chu Donglin looked at Shishi in disbelief. "Shishi, are you joking?"
This kind of stubbornness and troublemaking was not typical of the Girl.
"Then take Snow Sister with you too. I won't let you go out alone at night," the Girl insisted, looking at Chu Donglin with determination.
Well, it turns out she really wants me to take Snow...
Chu Donglin sighed in exasperation. "Do you really have no faith in me? Do you think I can't handle those Zombies on my own? Do I really need Snow's protection?"
"I'm just not going to let you go out alone at night."
Seeing the Girl's stubborn gaze, Chu Donglin could only helplessly raise his hands in defeat. "Alright, alright, you win. I concede. Anyway, I have to meet Xing'er tonight; there's no way you can stop me... right, Girl? What will it take for you to let me go?"
"Xing'er? A girl's name?"
Shishi furrowed her brow, keenly sensing something unusual. "Is the person you're going to see a girl?"
"Yeah, that's right. Is there a problem with that?"
"Is she pretty?"
"Of course she's beautiful. As for how beautiful, you'll know when you meet her later."
"Is she more beautiful than Snow Sister?"
"Well... ahem..." Glancing at the snow beside him, Chu Donglin cleared his throat and said, "Isn't it obvious? You'll find out when you meet her."
"Then, Dad, do you like her?"
"Like her? Of course I do. Xing'er is such a good girl... uh... Shishi? Why are you looking at me like that?"
The girl stubbornly lifted her head, her big watery eyes fixed on Chu Donglin, refusing to look away. "Dad, do you want to be with her and marry her as your wife?"
The girl sniffled, seeming a bit upset. "And then she would become Shishi's mom? Later, she would have children with you, and when you're not home, she would mistreat Shishi, not give Shishi food, and make Shishi sleep in the hallway and freeze?"
"…Where did you get these ridiculous ideas from, Girl?"
The girl's narrative left Chu Donglin both amused and exasperated. "Do you really believe in fairy tale stories? In reality, there aren't that many wicked stepmothers."
"In any case, Shishi doesn't like her," the girl said firmly as she clung tightly to Chu Donglin's arm, pouting. "Shishi won't let Dad be with any other woman."
