When he returned home, Snow had already been waiting here for a while.
“Dad, you’re finally back!”
The girl excitedly rushed over and nervously hugged Chu Donglin. “Snow Sister came back alone, and when I asked her what happened, she wouldn’t tell me. I thought something had happened to you… it really scared Shishi.”
“It’s nothing, just a minor issue. I was temporarily separated from your Snow Sister. You don’t need to worry, Shishi.”
He affectionately ruffled the girl’s hair and smiled as he asked, “When did your Snow Sister come back?”
“Um… let me think.”
The girl tilted her head in thought and said, “I think she came back around two-thirty in the afternoon… it should definitely be around two-thirty.”
“Did she bring anything back with her? Like some giant peaches or something?”
“Peaches? No,” Shishi looked at Chu Donglin curiously and asked, “Snow Sister didn’t bring anything back; she came back empty-handed… What’s wrong, Dad? Did you ask Snow Sister to bring something back?”
“Haha… not really, I was just asking casually. Don’t mind it.”
With a dismissive smile, Chu Donglin turned his gaze to the girl standing dazedly in the corner of the living room and sighed helplessly.
Although he had long suspected that Snow wasn’t clever enough to take the opportunity to pick apples, those two mysterious peaches were simply too important. Deep down, Chu Donglin still held onto a glimmer of hope.
Now reality had completely extinguished that hope, leaving him somewhat speechless.
“Snow, come here.”
He waved to the girl, and Chu Donglin took her pale hand, asking, "Did you get hurt when you faced that Tyrant before?"
The girl stared at him for a long time, seemingly pondering the meaning of the question and how to respond.
After a while, she slowly shook her head, indicating that she had not been injured.
"That's good to hear. Let's go back and take another look," Chu Donglin said, glancing at the dim light outside.
For the Zombie, the allure of those two Mysterious Peaches was simply too great. Even if it meant facing the terrifying Fourth-Stage Tyrant again, Chu Donglin was unwilling to give up so easily.
Early the next morning, as the first rays of sunlight streamed into the city, Chu Donglin left the apartment building with Xue and rode his motorcycle toward the silent district.
The morning air was slightly fresh, with white mist hovering above the city, transforming it into a place resembling a fairyland.
The buildings appeared intermittently through the fog, and occasionally, mysterious figures could be seen climbing and leaping in the shadows of the structures.
These were powerful Second-Stage Zombies, returning to their various nests after a night of chaos and slaughter, preparing to rest and avoid the sun.
Unlike most Second-Stage Zombies, Chu Donglin and Xue wore gloves and wrapped scarves around their faces, covering their skin completely to shield themselves from sunlight as they safely navigated through this sunlit city.
The temperature of early autumn had already begun to drop, and it wouldn't be long before harsh winter arrived.
When that time came, snow would blanket this Dead City, sealing off all roads and restricting even the movements of the Zombies.
"Before the heavy snow arrives, I must evolve to the Third Stage and then return to Wangcheng to find my parents."
Riding on his motorcycle, feeling the Desolate Autumn Wind, Chu Donglin said this to himself.
Winter would be a formidable barrier for humanity struggling to survive in this apocalyptic world.
Even though he knew that his parents were living safely in the military's Survivor Base, a sense of unease lingered in Chu Donglin's heart.
He had to leave Pear City at the latest before the heavy snow fell and head to Wangcheng to search for his parents.
In this first winter since the apocalypse began, he hoped to spend it with them.
The area where the Tyrant resided remained eerily silent. As he looked down the street, all he could see were the vacant stares of Ordinary Zombies wandering aimlessly.
With no goals or plans, these low-level Ordinary Zombies wandered mindlessly, trying to catch a whiff of food and then swarming to devour any living beings they encountered.
Outside the area where peach trees grew, a section of the outer wall had collapsed, and the location of the Tyrant had changed from yesterday.
Yet this terrifying monster still stood there like a mountain, guarding the mysterious peach tree behind it, waiting for it to ripen for harvest.
The moment his motorcycle appeared at the street corner, the Tyrant's eyes snapped open. Its Blood-red Eyes fixed intently on Chu Donglin, letting out a Bloodthirsty roar filled with rage.
Clearly, the Tyrant remembered Chu Donglin as the one who nearly stole its precious peaches.
Now, as Chu Donglin dared to appear before it again, this act completely provoked the Tyrant's fury, pushing it to the brink of madness.
It lifted a car from the roadside and hurled it heavily in this direction, aiming to crush Chu Donglin.
With a nimble turn, Chu Donglin dodged the incoming vehicle. As he turned to escape with Xue, he noticed Tyrant glaring at him from hundreds of meters away, teeth clenched, yet it did not pursue.
A heaviness settled in Chu Donglin's heart, and his mood darkened.
It seemed that the monster had indeed become smarter; afraid that Chu Donglin would use the same trick to lure it away, it dared not follow.
This realization made Chu Donglin feel quite troubled.
He led Xue out of Tyrant's line of sight and carefully devised several plans on the adjacent street, hoping to draw Tyrant away while ensuring their safety so that Xue could sneak off to steal some peaches.
However, no matter how much Chu Donglin provoked it this time, Tyrant stubbornly refused to leave the area.
Once the cars nearby had been thrown, the fellow began tearing down sections of the guardrail from the sidewalk and tossing them over.
When the guardrails were exhausted, the fellow uprooted trees from the roadside and hurled them as well.
Even after everything nearby had been thrown and the intersection was nearly blocked by a chaotic pile of debris, Tyrant still refused to come out.
The standoff continued until sunset, with Tyrant remaining steadfastly in place, indifferent to Chu Donglin's provocations from hundreds of meters away.
Chu Donglin dared not approach too closely; they stared at each other across a distance of over two hundred meters for a while. Ultimately, he had no choice but to temporarily give up and return home with Xue.
Riding on his motorcycle, feeling the cool evening breeze and bathed in the glow of the setting sun, he sensed the stirrings of Second-Stage Zombies in the city around him, ready to emerge as darkness fell. Chu Donglin slowly exhaled a breath of frustration.
"Is there really nothing I can do about that fellow?"
He had tried every possible means, yet he couldn't inflict any harm on that Tyrant.
The other party refused to leave the area, so even though he was coveting the two Mysterious Peaches within, he remained helpless.
However, if he just left it alone, he wouldn't be able to accept it. The effectiveness of those two peaches was evident; even a Fourth Tier Tyrant guarded them carefully. They were enough for Chu Donglin to evolve to Fourth Tier... or perhaps even higher.
By that time, he would become the most powerful being in this apocalypse. He would no longer have any worries and could roam freely in this world, ensuring the safety of everyone around him without fear.
For Chu Donglin, who bore the lives of many loved ones on his shoulders, this was something he absolutely could not give up.
"Forget it, I'll think about it again later. Once I leave, Shishi's Girl will definitely be starving. Eating instant noodles isn't good; I should try to make time to cook her lunch in the future."
Chu Donglin thought to himself as he turned his motorcycle around a corner and came to a stop.
On the storefront window by the street, there was a white flyer posted. He had seen several of these flyers on his way here but hadn't paid them any mind.
However, this time, as he passed by the corner, a glimpse of a certain phrase on the flyer caught his attention, leaving him stunned.
"Brother-in-law, please don't hide from me anymore. I am Xing'er..."
