"Senior! I like you!"
The clear and melodious voice rang in his ears, and Chu Donglin turned around in surprise. He looked at the determined girl behind him, feeling a bit confused. "Uh... Xue? What are you going crazy about today? Is this a new prank?"
The girl's face turned crimson with embarrassment, but meeting Chu Donglin's gaze, she refused to back down and boldly declared her feelings. "Senior! I like you! Even if you... mmm mmm mmm..."
Before she could finish, Chu Donglin jumped in shock and quickly covered her mouth, blocking the rest of her words in her throat.
"Idiot! What are you shouting about?"
Chu Donglin was so startled that he looked around nervously, as if he were a thief. After confirming that no one was watching, he finally sighed in relief and released the girl from his embrace.
"Shouting so loudly, aren't you afraid someone will hear?"
The girl blushed as she looked at him and murmured, "Senior, don't you like me?"
"Of course I don't like your mom; I don't even know who she is. How could I like her?"
"Senior, you're being unreasonable!" The girl puffed out her cheeks and glared at Chu Donglin. "You clearly know what I mean."
"Alright, alright. Even if I know what you mean, so what?" Chu Donglin shrugged helplessly and said, "Even if I liked you, do you think you could be my girlfriend?"
The girl was overjoyed. "Can I?"
"Of course not! I already have a girlfriend; don't you know that?"
Chu Donglin stared at the girl and said, "What on earth are you thinking? You were just shouting so loudly; even if it was a joke, it was too much! If others find out, aren't you afraid your sister Mengying will come after you?"
The girl pouted and huffed, "Hmph! A girl like Sister Mengying, so spoiled and rude, is totally unfit to be the senior's girlfriend."
"As if you're any better suited," he replied.
"Of course I am," she said proudly. "If I were the senior's girlfriend, I would be very generous. I definitely wouldn't be like Sister Mengying, who gets all worked up over him talking to other girls."
"Meng Ying is just too nervous about me."
"But what Sister Mengying did was way over the line!" the girl exclaimed indignantly. "They aren't even married yet, and she's already trying to control everything. I really wonder if she'll make a chain to keep you tied down after marriage."
Seeing the girl's adorable yet furious expression, Chu Donglin couldn't help but chuckle. "It's not that exaggerated."
"It really is! You have no idea how people at school talk about you behind your back. They say things like 'whipped by his girlfriend,' 'spineless,' 'a man living off a woman,' and 'just after the Liu family's money,'" she said, her anger rising as she recalled those rumors.
"Hmph! It's just too outrageous! How can someone act like that as a girlfriend? So willful and rude, with no regard for your feelings at all. Throwing a tantrum like that... it's just... hmph!"
"Shouldn't I be the one who's upset? Why are you angrier than I am?" Chu Donglin laughed in disbelief.
"Of course! Normal people can't stand this kind of thing. You're such a nice guy, yet she treats you like that—anyone would be outraged."
The girl glared at Chu Donglin and continued, "Yesterday, in front of so many people, she just slammed the table and left! It's so... hmph! And she's supposed to be a rich lady? She has no manners at all, making you lose face like that—it's just too despicable!"
"Yeah, it really is despicable," Chu Donglin laughed heartily as he ruffled her hair, making her smooth long locks a mess. "So to cheer you up, I'll take you out for barbecue."
"Really?" The girl's eyes lit up as she hurriedly followed him. "Then let's go eat... Senior!"
Halfway there, she suddenly realized something and blocked Chu Donglin's path, exclaiming, "I'm worried about you! Why are you always so indifferent about something that affects your reputation?"
"Because it doesn't really matter."
"Does it not matter if your reputation is tarnished? If people are talking behind your back and looking down on you?"
"What achievements can those gossiping fellows have? Those who truly know me understand that I'm not the kind of person who relies on others," Chu Donglin said with a smile. "Just like you, do you think I'm someone who lives off a woman's support?"
"Of course I don't think that, but people can be quite fearsome!" The girl looked seriously at Chu Donglin and said, "Senior, you can't underestimate the power of rumors."
"Then why are you still following me around? Aren't you afraid of being laughed at, of people saying you're my third wheel?"
"Let them say what they want; that's their purpose anyway."
"What? Being a third wheel is your goal?"
"Of course not! I want to be your girlfriend!" The girl blushed as she looked at Chu Donglin and said, "But if you... if you can't let go of Sister Mengying, then I can quietly be your secret lover. As long as you have me in your heart, that's enough."

Chu Donglin snapped his fingers against the girl's forehead and laughed, "That joke of yours isn't funny at all."
The girl pouted, covering her forehead with an unhappy expression and huffed, "But at least you laughed."
"What does that mean?"
"It means my joke is still funny."
"Oh fine, fine, you win. Your joke is funny; is that enough?" Chu Donglin shrugged and changed the subject. "Let's go get some barbecue."
Taking two steps forward, Chu Donglin suddenly realized that he was alone. Instinctively turning around, he saw the girl standing under the dim streetlight, gazing at him from a distance of four or five meters.
In her beautiful eyes, there was a shimmering light, like ripples on water.
"What’s wrong?"
The girl clenched her fists and said with determination, "Senior!"
"Uh-huh?"
"I... I will wait for you!"
She looked firmly at Chu Donglin and declared loudly, "No matter how long it takes, I will wait for you. I won’t accept any other boys. No matter how far you go or how much time passes, I will be right here waiting for you."

Though her voice was not loud, there was a serious glimmer in her sparkling eyes. The moment he locked eyes with her, Chu Donglin felt a sudden pause; his heart nearly stopped beating for an instant.
His heart trembled slightly as he spoke in a hoarse voice, "Are... are you serious?"
Serious...?
"Seriously...?"
"Is this for real...?"
"Really...?"
"Is it...?"
"Is it...?"
Chu Donglin suddenly sat up, drenched in sweat as he stared at the rain pouring in from the balcony. It was clearly daytime, yet he felt as if he had fallen into the depths of hell, chilled to the bone.
"Xue..."
He murmured the name of the girl from his dream, staring blankly at his pale hands. Memories flooded back of the Zombie he encountered at the Supermarket, along with that familiar pretty face. In agony, he clutched his head and buried it in his hands.
"How did it come to this... Why..."
