As a crowd of onlookers, unaware of the truth, stood in shock at Chu Donglin's fighting prowess, he cheerfully hummed a tune and pushed open the door.
"Hi, Shishi, good afternoon!"
The girl on the sofa looked up blankly, staring at Chu Donglin without responding.
However, Chu Donglin didn't expect her to greet him. With his left hand carrying a large box and his right hand closing the door, he whistled as he walked to the corner of the room and set the box down.
"Chirp chirp... chirp chirp... chirp chirp..."
A series of crisp sounds came from inside the cardboard box, causing the girl's ears to twitch as she stared in Chu Donglin's direction.
Inside the box were at least twenty newly hatched chicks, all peering up at Chu Donglin with their heads raised, occasionally letting out their sharp little calls.
"Don't panic, don't panic. I'll get you something to eat right away."
Chu Donglin said as he turned and walked into the kitchen to start washing rice and cooking.
He had stumbled upon these chicks by chance. After leaving the gas station, he had gone to another market but found nothing of interest.
However, inside the chicken shop, he discovered a group of chicks that had just hatched not long ago.
Due to the front door being locked tight, these chicks had escaped being attacked by the zombies outside and were safe for now.
But because the door was shut, they couldn't go out to find food. Unfortunately, their mother hen had starved to death in the room since no one was there to feed them.
If it weren't for Chu Donglin passing by and hearing the chirping sounds from inside, these chicks would likely have perished from hunger in about an hour.
He decided to raise these chicks, as once they grew up, Shishi could enjoy fresh chicken meat and eggs. Moreover, any surplus eggs could be hatched, resulting in another batch of chicks.
This continuous cycle could sustain them for many years, allowing the girl to have chicken meat from time to time.
However, the newly hatched chicks posed a bit of a challenge. In the past, Chu Donglin's grandmother usually fed such chicks with rice soaked in warm water.
He wasn't sure if feeding them raw rice would work, so after some thought, he decided it was better not to take the risk.
These chicks were the spark of life; if he accidentally killed them, finding another similar batch would be difficult.
To be honest, ever since Home bought a rice cooker, Chu Donglin hadn't cooked rice over an open flame for many years.
Looking at the pot on the fire, he felt he might have added too much water—yet there was no choice; under these circumstances, he had to push through. After all, there was no electricity to use the rice cooker.
When the rice was finally cooked, Chu Donglin pushed open the kitchen door and returned to the living room.
There, he noticed that the girl on the sofa had vanished, replaced by Shishi who was dazedly squatting beside the cardboard box.
At that moment, the girl had her head lowered, her unfocused gaze staring blankly at the lively chicks squirming inside the box. Listening to their chirping sounds, she hesitated for a moment before reaching out her hand.
Just as she was about to touch those adorable chicks, she jolted back in surprise at the sound of the door opening.
She looked anxiously toward the kitchen door where Chu Donglin stood. The girl froze for a moment, her eyes trembling lightly with fear.
Then, she cautiously extended her foot to the side, stepping lightly as if afraid of damaging the floor, and carefully made her way over.
Step by step, it was like she was sneaking away. Under Chu Donglin's bewildered gaze, Shishi slipped back onto the sofa and resumed her usual sitting posture.
Chu Donglin sighed and walked in front of the sofa.
He crouched down to meet the girl's gaze at eye level.
In Shishi's still dazed expression, Chu Donglin could sense her body trembling slightly.
He reached out to pat the girl's head, and the moment his hand touched her hair, she tensed up, bracing herself as if ready to be hit at any moment. The vacant look in her eyes gradually filled with fear, and her body shook rigidly.
Seeing her like this pained Chu Donglin and left him feeling somewhat disappointed.
He had thought that after the girl had relied on him before, Shishi was no longer afraid of him and that her once-closed heart was finally beginning to open up.
But he hadn’t expected that the psychological scars ran so deep; as soon as memories of past abuse resurfaced, the girl immediately reverted to a state of panic. No wonder Shishi acted like a puppet; it turned out those bastards had restricted her movements!
If those two scoundrels hadn’t limited the girl’s actions, then why would she be so terrified when Chu Donglin discovered her leaving the sofa?
At that moment, Chu Donglin finally understood why she always sat motionless on the sofa.
It wasn't that she didn't want to move; it was that she didn't dare to.
Taking a deep breath, Chu Donglin picked up the girl, who was completely stiff, and walked over to the cardboard box.
"Shishi, do you like chickens?"
He set her down and squatted beside Shishi, meeting her gaze. He gently patted her head and asked.
The girl kept her head down, too afraid to look at him. Her body was tense, trembling with fear as she awaited punishment and beatings.
"Alright, alright, I won't hit you. Please don't be so nervous, okay?"
Seeing that Shishi was still shaking, Chu Donglin thought for a moment and reached out to hold a chicken.
He placed the fragile and adorable creature in front of Shishi and asked, "Do you like it?"
In his palm, the chicken chirped cheerfully, its clear voice accompanied by its small beak and fluffy feathers, making it incredibly cute.
Staring blankly at the chicken before her, Shishi's eyes flickered. She cautiously lifted her head and saw Chu Donglin smiling at her. That smile was warm and calm, devoid of any malice.
The girl stood there for a moment before finally saying foolishly, "I like it..."
Chu Donglin smiled wider. "Then can I give it to Shishi?"
The girl looked at Chu Donglin's smiling face, then lowered her gaze to the fragile life in his palm. With a hint of disappointment, she shook her head. "Shishi doesn't want it..."
"Huh? Why not?" Chu Donglin was taken aback, a bit confused. "Didn't you like it very much?"
"Because Shishi isn't its mother," the girl said, staring blankly at the life in Chu Donglin's hand, her voice filled with sadness. "If it's given to Shishi, it will starve. Shishi doesn't want the chick to die..."
"You don't need to worry about that; I'll take care of feeding it. I won't let it starve."
"But the chick will be killed," the girl said, suddenly trembling in fear as if recalling some terrifying scene.
"Shishi is useless; Shishi can't protect it. The chick will be killed by them. They have guns and knives; it's so scary... Shishi will be hurt by them, and the chick will be hurt too, and then... then... then..."
Tears streamed down the girl's cheeks.
She looked at Chu Donglin, her eyes filled with fear, trembling uncontrollably as she muttered incoherently.
"Everyone will die... everyone will die... no one will come to save us. The chick will die, and Shishi will die too... it's so scary... Shishi is so scared... everyone will die..."
