The encounter with the White Wolf made Chu Donglin realize two things.
First, Second-Stage Zombies had already appeared in this city; the existence of the White Wolf was definitely not unique.
Second, the Energy Core of Low-Level Zombies held no attraction for High-Level Zombies. Otherwise, the moment the White Wolf saw him, it would have pounced. In other words, the Energy Core of Low-Level Zombies could not help High-Level Zombies evolve.
Well... that was good news. At least in the future, while navigating through hordes of zombies, Chu Donglin wouldn't have to worry about being attacked by those higher-level ones.
However, the gap in levels among zombies was quite significant, wasn't it?
Ordinary First-Stage Zombies had combat abilities similar to those of an average person. Chu Donglin had fought fiercely to take down three zombies, which had significantly strengthened him. But he was only slightly stronger than an ordinary person; his combat ability was probably comparable to that of some martial artists.
When faced with firearms and similar weapons, he could only flee in panic.
But this White Wolf before him was like a beast straight out of a movie! Who had ever seen a wolf nearly the size of a bus? A Mutated Zombie at Chu Donglin's level would likely be torn apart in an instant if it charged at it.
For a Mutated Zombie of the White Wolf's caliber, ordinary handguns were probably useless. Without powerful firearms, it seemed impossible to deal with it.
After seeing the White Wolf, Chu Donglin no longer dared to underestimate those high-level zombies.
Not to mention the suppression that High-Level Zombies exerted over Low-Level Zombies; just comparing strength and agility made it clear that Low-Level Zombies were merely fodder against higher-level ones.
Indeed, for Chu Donglin now, cutting down ordinary unevolved zombies felt like chopping vegetables.
He figured that for those High-Level Zombies dealing with someone like him—a Low-Level Zombie—it would be a similar situation.
Sighing, he thought, I really am not strong enough. I should keep a low profile from now on; who knows how many Second-Stage Zombies are lurking in this city?
With a shake of his head, Chu Donglin walked toward a motorcycle that had fallen by the roadside.
It was an unremarkable motorcycle—no flashy decorations or cool designs—but surprisingly aligned with Chu Donglin's aesthetic preferences.
Of course, what attracted him to this motorcycle was that the keys were still hanging from it. Coupled with its fallen position and the pool of blood and shattered bones nearby, Chu Donglin could roughly guess what had happened to its owner.
The apocalypse had arrived, and countless people had mutated into flesh-eating zombies.
The owner of a motorcycle rushed to his bike, ready to escape. Just as he was about to start the engine, he was suddenly tackled by the zombies. He met a gruesome fate, devoured by the horde, leaving only his motorcycle standing forlornly on the city street.
Ah... how pitiful. The purpose of a vehicle is to be ridden, yet this brand-new bike was completely ignored... Truly sad. Your owner has abandoned you; then let me take you for a ride.
Chu Donglin, with a sorrowful expression, propped up the fallen motorcycle and shamelessly claimed it as his own.
After checking, he found that the bike was mostly unharmed but splattered with some blood. Chu Donglin wiped away the dried stains with a cloth and then rode off on his newfound motorcycle.
Although the streets were littered with cars that had crashed and toppled over, motorcycles didn't require wide roads to navigate.
He could squeeze through any corner, and along the way, several unfortunate zombies that failed to dodge were sent flying to the roadside by Chu Donglin's reckless driving.
Bang—
Another dull thud echoed as a zombie was knocked into a lamppost, at least half of its body broken, writhing on the ground in agony.
Chu Donglin glanced at the unfortunate fellow and shrugged it off, ignoring its plight.
He dismounted from the bike and walked into the nearby market. "Can't blame me; you should have dodged. If you got hit, that's on you."
This market was located underground on the first basement level. Even in daylight, it required lighting to see clearly. However, with the city's power grid down, it was now shrouded in complete darkness.
For survivors like him, places like this market held no valuable supplies worth risking their lives for and were perilously dark—who would dare venture here?
Thus, Chu Donglin could very well be the first visitor to this market since the outbreak... uh... traveler.
Descending the stairs into the darkness, Chu Donglin soon entered the market. Standing at the entrance, he looked around and caught a whiff of rotting vegetables.
That was normal; it had been over ten days since the apocalypse began.
For such a long time, no one had taken care of this place. The vegetables left in the market had long since rotted, and the foul stench was to be expected.
Turning on a powerful flashlight, Chu Donglin began to wander around the market, illuminated by its beam.
Foul stench, nothing but foul stench.
In this vast market, it was hard to tell how many vegetables had accumulated. At this moment, all those vegetables were rotten, and the smell was enough to make an ordinary person retreat in disgust.
Moreover, in the darkness, some Zombies were silently wandering about, making it nearly impossible to defend against them.
If an ordinary human were to enter, they would likely be overwhelmed and devoured by the Zombies lurking in the shadows within three minutes. Even Chu Donglin, who didn’t have to worry about being attacked by Zombies, found it hard to endure the stench.
“Damn it, is there really any life that can survive in here?”
After witnessing the state of the market firsthand, Chu Donglin began to doubt his chances of finding a safe live chicken.
After turning countless corners and navigating several stalls, he finally arrived at the area dedicated to slaughtering turkeys and roasting chickens and ducks.
Kicking open the door of a swaying Zombie, Chu Donglin stepped inside. He crouched down and shone his flashlight toward the chicken coop; what he saw was not surprising.
The chicken coops had been violently destroyed and looked as if they might collapse at any moment.
Inside, not a single chicken remained; they had all vanished without leaving even a corpse behind. Most likely, they had been eaten by the Zombies in the market.
“Well, that was a wasted trip.”
Chu Donglin sighed and turned to head to the next market. However, when he changed the direction of his flashlight, he froze.
In the beam of light, not far away on a stall, a massive rooster was staring intently at him.
Its bright Dark Red comb stood tall and proud, exuding an air of arrogance as if it were looking down on mere mortals.
"Whoa!"
Chu Donglin instinctively took a step back, his face changing dramatically.
No matter how bold he was, encountering a rooster over a meter tall all of a sudden was a psychological pressure that even a normal human couldn't withstand. Whose rooster could be this big? It was almost the size of an ordinary calf!
"You’re asking for trouble!"
Chu Donglin reflexively pulled out his gun and fired a shot at the mutated rooster.
Bang—
The sound of the gunshot echoed sharply in the quiet, enclosed market, making it seem extraordinarily jarring.
The rooster was startled as well, squawking loudly and flapping its wings to take flight.
Of course, Chu Donglin's shot predictably missed.
He raised his hand and fired two more shots, but still failed to hit the flapping mutated rooster. He wanted to shoot again, but the mutated rooster was already flying toward him.
With the enemy so close, its sharp claws coming right at him, Chu Donglin had no choice but to toss aside his gun. Switching from ranged to melee combat, he swung his machete down.
Missed.
The rooster flapped its wings and surprisingly changed direction mid-air, dodging Chu Donglin's strike while its sharp claws lunged toward his eyes.
"You’re a chicken! Not an eagle! Just behave and be my meal; don’t rebel against me!"
Chu Donglin roared as he leaned back to avoid the incoming claws. With his left hand, he grabbed one of the rooster's legs and then slammed it heavily against the nearby concrete platform.
With Chu Donglin's current strength, if that impact landed solidly, even the mutated rooster would have its skull shattered.
However, after the mutation, this rooster not only grew larger in size, but its flapping strength also increased significantly.
With both wings flapping in a frenzy, it created a gust of wind that forced Chu Donglin to squint his eyes. He nearly got lifted off the ground by this mutated rooster.
"What the hell! Are you really going to defy gravity?"
In that moment of being airborne, Chu Donglin was startled. He exerted all his strength with both hands to halt the upward momentum, pulling the Mutated Rooster back down to the ground.
But just as he landed and steadied himself, the sharp beak of the Mutated Rooster lunged at his hand with ferocity.
In close proximity, Chu Donglin had no time to evade. The back of his hand was instantly pecked into a mass of wounds, blood spraying out in dark red splatters.
Overwhelmed by pain, Chu Donglin couldn't help but let out an angry scream.
He hadn't anticipated that this Mutated Rooster would be so powerful; in just a moment, his left hand was left riddled with holes from its relentless pecking.
Yet he refused to let go. Even as the flesh on the back of his hands was completely torn away, revealing the stark white bones beneath, Chu Donglin clung tightly to the Mutated Rooster, his eyes filled with fury.
"Die, you bastard!"
Without mercy, Chu Donglin grabbed the Mutated Rooster by its legs and swung it around in mid-air before smashing it heavily onto a nearby concrete platform.
Bang—
With a dull thud, the tremendous force struck down so hard that even the solid concrete trembled.
The rooster was directly hit and let out a painful whimper. Its head collided with the concrete, leaving it dazed and momentarily forgetting to resist.
Chu Donglin had no intention of waiting for it to recover for another round. Seizing the opportunity while the rooster was stunned, he raised his Machete and brought it down with force.
Thud—
Blood splattered everywhere as the Mutated Rooster was decapitated, its blood soaking the ground. Chu Donglin, who was close by, managed to dodge just in time and avoided getting splattered.
He had just changed into this new outfit that morning, and he certainly didn’t want to ruin it.
After tossing the headless body of the rooster aside, Chu Donglin picked up the creature's severed head and sliced it open, searching inside for an Energy Core.
He had to admit that this chicken had evolved significantly; the Energy Core was the largest he had ever seen among zombies.
This fellow relied on its sharp claws, beak, and short-range flying ability, which indeed gave it an overwhelming advantage over ordinary Mutated Zombies. It wasn’t surprising that it had evolved to such a degree.
Unfortunately for it, those advantages fell short when faced with Chu Donglin.
With a machete in one hand and a pistol in the other, humanity’s conquest over nature and other animals had never depended solely on physical strength but rather on various tools and weapons.
No matter how large this Mutated Rooster was or how sharp its beak and claws were, could they really compare to the sharpness and durability of a machete? Could they surpass the power of a gun? Although Chu Donglin's shooting skills were hardly impressive, they still provided a certain level of deterrence, didn’t they?
Wiping away the blood and grime from the surface of the Energy Core, Chu Donglin unhesitatingly consumed it. As a wave of warmth surged from his stomach, he watched as the wound on the back of his left hand began to heal rapidly.
