Chapter 49
The dormitory was shrouded in darkness, a thin layer of white smoke swirling throughout, obscuring the view inside.
This was a situation that occurred only when the Eerie Energy became excessively dense, making it difficult for the naked eye to see through!
At that moment, my Killing Intent surged, and my vision turned blood red. This level of Eerie Energy couldn't hinder me, and I quickly locked onto a shadowy figure within the dormitory. It seemed to have noticed me as well and slowly turned its head.
Its face was pale, with mostly white eyes. The pupils were about the size of yellow grains of millet, and two small horns protruded from its forehead, each no longer than an inch and roughly the thickness of a pencil!
It slowly grinned at me, its facial muscles twitching stiffly, revealing a mouth full of sharp fangs!
What kind of monster is this?
I was startled; I had never encountered such a creature before!
Woof woof woof!!
"Trash, Big Mouth Li, let's take it down together!"
"Alright! You've really changed since last time..."
I shouted loudly, feeling a surge of dark energy enveloping me, almost visible to the naked eye, as I charged toward the monster!
The reason I dared to act so recklessly was that I had gauged the creature's strength while dealing with the Ghostly Barrier earlier; it was only slightly stronger than me at most. Although Big Mouth Lee's abilities were somewhat lacking, together we could definitely handle it!
Big Mouth Lee rolled up his sleeves, touched his long hair, and without hesitation bit his tongue to let blood drip onto his dagger before charging forward.
Without saying a word, I plunged my dagger into the creature's waist. It let out a terrible scream as white smoke began to rise from the wound. Ha! It seemed this thing had very shallow Daoist Practice; it only looked fierce.
I felt a surge of joy and swung my dagger toward its head, ready to finish it off with one strike.
Little did I know, this creature was not so simple. As soon as it saw my knife descending, it struggled and swiftly dodged to the side, evading a direct hit. The slash that was meant for its neck ended up landing on its shoulder instead, nearly severing its arm. I could clearly see the flesh rolling back from the wound, pale and lifeless, resembling frozen chicken with no blood. This was also due to my low Killing Intent rank and insufficient strength; otherwise, even a glancing blow would have taken off some parts from its body. It would have been completely incapacitated.
"Roar! You hurt me! You will all die!"
The Demon let out a heart-wrenching scream, and suddenly, an eerie energy surged around it, transforming into a powerful gust of dark wind that slammed into me, Zhang Bowen, and Heizi. The force knocked the wind out of my chest, causing me to stagger back several steps. Zhang Bowen and Heizi experienced the same fate, being pushed back as well. Taking advantage of this moment, the Demon turned into a gust of wind and swept towards the window, crashing it open with a loud bang before making its escape.
It got away!
I sighed; if I had been just a bit stronger, that Demon would have definitely met its end tonight.
Suddenly, the lights in the dormitory flickered on. Zhang Team Leader walked in, followed by a group of stunned youngsters. Each of their faces was pale, clearly shaken by what they had just witnessed.
Zhang Team Leader looked at me with lingering fear and asked, "Xia, what exactly was that thing?"
"You saw the situation yourself; it was just like that. This is definitely not a case of malicious murder—it's essentially a supernatural incident!"
I shook my head and sighed again. "I suspect that this Dirty Thing might have been summoned by that Yokai Lantern. However, these Dirty Things usually have some causal relationship when they harm people. Typically, if you disturb them, you might just get entangled with them at most. But this thing clearly came for blood right away; we need to investigate further to understand why."
With that said, I went over to check on Li Wei while Zhang Team Leader began instructing the youngsters who had witnessed everything to keep quiet about it. His decision was wise; such matters should not be spread outside. Firstly, it would cause panic among people; secondly, this is a State-Owned Enterprise focused on scientific research—spreading rumors about superstitions would not bode well.
At this moment, Li Wei had already fallen unconscious, her body marked with dark blue handprints. Zhao Ding was holding her tightly and crying incessantly.
Seeing this scene, if I couldn't guess the general situation now, I might as well knock my head against a wall—apparently, these two had gotten closer while I was away!
Looking at Zhao Ding's drooping figure, I truly wondered how he managed to handle Li Wei's wild spirit!
But having brothers and friends together is still a good thing.
I walked up and patted Zhao Ding on the shoulder. "Brother, I'm here to check on her condition!"
After witnessing my fierce battle with the Demon, Zhao Ding had developed a considerable trust in me. As soon as he saw me approaching, he hurriedly set Li Wei down. "Ji, I’ve never asked you for anything before, but this time you have to save her!"
"I'll do my best!"
I couldn't make any promises lightly, especially since I had already delayed for too long before coming here. I moved closer to Li Wei and checked her breathing.
Fortunately, she was still breathing, and there was warmth in her body!
Yet, for some reason, I felt that something was off about Li Wei. She seemed to emanate a faint Eerie Energy!
I couldn't be sure what was happening, so I called out for Furball.
Furball barked loudly and then let out a strange, melodic howl directed at me.
This was our agreed signal, a sort of coded language we had created to avoid drawing attention.
The meaning was roughly this: "All seven spirits are present, but one of the three souls is missing!" Her fate was incomplete; Fortune and Misfortune were unpredictable! The lost part was the Soul, which has the greatest influence on a person's fate. Whether it would bring good or bad fortune, I truly couldn't tell!
The Soul was lost?
My heart sank further.
Humans possess Three Souls and Seven Spirits. The three souls are the Soul itself, the Earth Soul, and the Spirit. The seven spirits include the Corpse Dog, the Arrow Spirit, the Sparrow Yin, the Thief Swallower, the Non-Poisonous Spirit, the Purifying Spirit, and the Stinking Lung!
When all Three Souls and Seven Spirits are intact, a person lives. If one is lost, that person may become foolish or suffer from weakness for life, possibly even facing death!
Among these three souls, the Soul represents Yang Qi and vitality!
If the Soul is discarded, then the Yang Qi within that person will continuously diminish. Soon, the Eerie Energy will invade their body, and it won't be long before they meet their end! This is also why I sensed a trace of Eerie Energy in Sulei Lei.
Generally speaking, if the Soul leaves the body, that person can only hold on for a maximum of seven days. If the Soul is not retrieved within that time, death is inevitable!
"Can you deduce where her Soul is?"
"This girl is healthy and very lively; she doesn't resemble those sickly short-lived souls. Right now, her Lifespan isn't over, yet her Soul has left the body. This is a sign of sudden death, indicating that this is a calamity in her Fate. However, everything is not set in stone; human effort can change it!"
"I know; I can tell how much Lifespan she has left without your help."
"The Divination hasn't yielded results."
"In the end, we were still a step too late. If only we had arrived a minute earlier, her Soul wouldn't have been lost!"
Hearing this made me quite angry. I shot Zhao Pan a fierce glare; if it weren't for this delay, Li Wei wouldn't be in this predicament.
"What should we do now?"
I sighed lightly, closed my eyes, and gritted my teeth as I said, "Right now, there's only one path left to take: Soul Calling!"
