Could it be the Water Monkey? The Water Monkey is actually a folk legend about water ghosts.
According to the records in Mausoleum Secrets, there is another belief in the southern regions that the Water Monkey is a unique aquatic creature, specifically a type of Zongzi found in the water. It is said that the souls of children who drowned in the water became these creatures after absorbing Yang Qi from aquatic beings. They transform into something resembling a Black Fiend, covered in black fur, looking somewhat like a monkey, or even akin to a sloth. Essentially, they are humanoid monsters with black fur. When submerged, they possess immense strength, dragging people underwater and suffocating them with mud, ultimately draining their blood. However, these creatures are only fierce in the water; once they come ashore and are exposed to sunlight, they become weak within moments and will surely perish within half a day, turning into a Corpse within three days.
This legend does hold some truth. Firstly, Zongzi are known for their bloodsucking tendencies; typically, wandering souls only absorb Yang Qi from the living and do not consume blood—especially not from the dead. Moreover, Big Zongzi cannot survive long under sunlight before meeting their end.
Yet whether the Water Monkey is truly a ghost or a corpse remains uncertain to me since I have never encountered one. Nonetheless, this entity has gained considerable notoriety among the public; whenever someone drowns during summer fun, people often blame it on the Water Monkey.
Recalling this tale piqued my interest, and I couldn't help but ask, "Hey, Brother Qiang, you've traveled far and wide and seen much; have you ever encountered a Water Monkey?"
"Oh! You mean the Water Monkey? I've seen one before; how could I not?" Bald Qiang chuckled and continued, "Actually, it's not as mysterious as people make it out to be. The tales are often exaggerated. To be honest, the Water Monkey is simply someone who drowned in the water. Due to the heavy Eerie Energy underwater, their souls can't disperse and thus remain there to harm others by seeking substitutes. It's not as terrifying as folklore suggests; I reckon we might have genuinely come across such a rare thing!"
So that's how it is!
After listening to Bald Qiang's explanation, I finally gained an intuitive understanding of the Water Monkey from folk beliefs.
Based on Bald Qiang's definition, what had just pulled me could indeed be classified as a Water Monkey; however, it didn't seem as ferocious as described in legends—no black fur or green face with fangs!
Although it was merely a fleeting moment of terror, I felt that the water ghost that nearly took my head didn't appear particularly fearsome.
At this moment, Xiao Xiao's fortune remained uncertain; whether she could subdue that water ghost was still another matter. One must remember that water ghosts go wild in water and are extremely fierce underwater. Although Xiao Xiao had accepted her fate during this time and had also mastered some abilities—being quite strong and capable of flying—whether she could handle it remained unknown. It was indeed premature to speculate on such matters now.
Without further ado, we focused our attention on the surface of the Yin River illuminated by our powerful flashlights, trying to catch any trace of Xiao Xiao. Zhengyang seemed worried about her safety and jumped into the Yin River.
Unfortunately, the Eerie Energy in the Yin River was intense; even our strong flashlights could only illuminate about five meters below the surface. Beyond that depth, we could see no signs of her at all. Below us swirled white Shadow Mist like fog lifting over the river's surface—its depth was unfathomable, and what lay beneath remained a mystery!
Time passed second by second.
We who were alert inside the coffin grew increasingly anxious.
After waiting for nearly half an hour, there finally was some movement beneath the water; we saw several dark shadows swiftly darting up from below with incredible speed!
"Here they come!"
Bald Qiang shouted, and for safety's sake, he immediately disengaged the safety on his Charge gun. The rest of us held our blades at the ready, waiting in silence.
Moments later, with a thunderous roar, the calm surface of the river erupted into several meters of spray as shadows surged up from beneath the water!
Once I could see what was happening, I finally lowered my sword, though my heart was still in my throat.
Because Zhengyang was brought up by Xiao Xiao!
Xiao Xiao had another hand gripping a woman with exceptionally long hair...
After surfacing from the water, Xiao Xiao stood in the coffin and tossed Zhengyang inside. It was then that I noticed Zhengyang's complexion was faintly purple, clearly heavily corroded by the Eerie Energy in the Yin River. He must have been frozen solid, which explained his pitiful appearance; however, he didn't seem to have sustained any fatal injuries. As soon as he landed in the coffin, he immediately sat up and began to meditate.
Seeing this scene put me at ease. The corrosion from Eerie Energy could be deadly to ordinary people, but for experts of their caliber, it was merely a minor inconvenience. As long as they activated their Daoist Spiritual Energy, they could completely dispel it in no time.
What truly piqued my interest was the woman that Xiao Xiao had brought up. She was thick with Eerie Energy, clearly not a benign presence and definitely not alive. Just looking at her long hair reminded me that this was what had almost choked me to death.
For a moment, I found myself circling around this obviously injured and utterly defenseless Dirty Thing, scrutinizing her closely.
Though I could only see her profile, I could already glean much about her appearance.
This water ghost was drenched all over with long hair that cascaded down to her waist when she lay on the ground. She wore plain white garments and classical white cloth shoes that made her look like a woman in her twenties. Her cheeks were particularly gaunt; overall, she resembled a delicate beauty. However, her ears were unusually large, reminiscent of those from Avatar!
It was precisely those strikingly large ears that gave this water ghost an oddly cute charm!
Like a neighbor girl.
A cute water ghost?
I shook my head, forcibly clearing the chaotic thoughts from my mind before turning my gaze back to Xiao Xiao to inquire about the specifics.
"There was no fierce battle."
Xiao Xiao seemed incredulous. "The first time I made a move, I had no idea about my own abilities. I didn't expect its Daoist Practice to be so poor. It was just strong and agile in the water, but in a face-to-face duel, I took it down with one move. Zhengyang couldn't stand the erosion, so I dragged it up! I didn't realize I was this strong; I really am a tough woman."
"Why not just slice it in half?"
"That would have been a waste."
"This creature has a particularly high level of intelligence. Although its cultivation is average, it always has this fierce determination to defend this place. I suspect it might be related to that Corpse Raising Ground. Moreover, when we brought it up, it kept shouting at us. Unfortunately, we couldn't understand its language, so I thought I'd capture it and let you take a look!"
It can shout and scream?
So, this Dirty Thing actually possesses some language ability?
Perhaps we could indeed have a conversation with it. Even ants strive to survive; there's no need for these cunning Dirty Things to be any different. As long as we give them a way out, concepts like honesty and morality mean nothing to them. If we could learn some information about the Corpse Raising Ground from this water ghost, it would be beneficial without any harm!
Thinking of this, I immediately used Cursed Script to communicate with the water ghost, asking why it appeared here.
"Because I've been guarding this gate for nearly ten thousand years. I'm also one of the Night Watchmen of the great Atlantis monarch's resting place!"
Finally, the water ghost spoke. It suddenly lifted its head, its eyes filled with hatred and a mad fury as it glared at me. It shouted angrily, "All who disturb my king's slumber are my enemies! Though I may not be your match, you will ultimately meet a grim fate! For my king has awakened—a great warrior has been born! He will lead Atlantis back to glory! And you will become his blood sacrifice upon awakening!"
