"Brother Li, does it really hurt that much when you get hit? You sound like a pig being slaughtered!"
"Oh my mother! My ass is torn, and then you sit on me right on the sharp stone. How can it not hurt like hell? Only officials are allowed to complain; common folks aren't supposed to cry out in pain!"
"Alright, alright, look at where we are... Can't you see that thing is a Mysterious Corpse?" Ghost Granny's eyes darkened further as she glanced at the mummy, her whole body shivering.
Mysterious Corpse?
What is a Mysterious Corpse?
To be honest, I had never heard of such a thing before.
A Mysterious Corpse must be just that—a corpse.
If a corpse had any Buddhist nature, that would be impossible because once it becomes a corpse, all that remains is its beastly nature. It wouldn't refrain from bloodshed or killing. So, I figured that this Mysterious Corpse of Hua Mulan must have some Daoist Practice and could use the techniques it had in life as a Zongzi!
As for why it could retain its abilities from when it was alive, I could see confusion in Hua Mulan's eyes; she was probably just as puzzled about this matter. As for me, I couldn't figure it out either. If I were to guess, there were likely two reasons.
First, the feng shui of this place.
The Yin River nurtures corpses; this is one of the most advanced techniques for preserving bodies. Even Three Clear Daoists would find it appealing, which shows how unique the feng shui here is!
Second, the funeral rites!
This Queen was the Grand Sorceress of Atlantis in her lifetime and the highest devotee of Anubis, the god of mummification. The funeral rites for someone like her would undoubtedly be very unique. I don't understand the specifics, but there are many intricacies involved; every religious believer has their own practices. Just look at the runes on that dog-headed gold cover; those runes hold power too. So I speculate that perhaps her funeral rites allowed her to retain her abilities from life, thus making her a Mysterious Corpse—a Mysterious Corpse capable of sorcery!
Suddenly!
At that moment, the Mysterious Corpse moved again. It shook violently as if it were sifting through grain, and then all the wrappings around it fell away in circles. The outer layers had turned completely black due to oxidation and fell to the ground in an instant, revealing the inner white wrappings that continued to shed.
The primary purpose of mummification is preservation—to prevent the body from decaying after drying out. Therefore, it is wrapped in as many layers of gauze as possible. I remember reading that in ancient Egypt, one mummy was wrapped with a record-breaking 1,087 layers until there was no more room left in its human-shaped coffin. That mummy was exceptionally well-preserved; I saw pictures online where its skin wasn't the usual dark color of corpses but rather a faint brown with elasticity!
Now this Mysterious Corpse had quite a few wrappings as well. After shaking for some time, it finally managed to shed all its wrappings onto the ground in thick layers. Then it revealed its true form—a skeleton!
All moisture had evaporated, leaving only a layer of black skin covering the bones. Its belly was sunken in with clear knife marks where all its organs had been removed during mummification. Green light flickered from its eye sockets, and when the wrappings fell away, all its hair dropped off too, scattering everywhere—leaving behind just a bald skull.
As the cloth fell away, a chilling stench of decay instantly filled the tomb, reminiscent of feet that had been wrapped for months and were finally freed from their bindings. The smell was unbearable, and I immediately began to gag. It wasn't just me; Zhang Jinya and the others were also retching, truly a disgusting sight.
"What the hell is that smell? I've never encountered such a powerful stench of death!"
Bald Qiang cursed while gagging, "This American Ginseng is revolting! It's been sealed for thousands of years, and now that we've entered, it's released its odor. This is worse than Brother Li taking off his shoes and airing out his feet!"
" Qiang, I'll curse your ancestors!"
Big Mouth Lee was not pleased and shouted back, "Am I really that disgusting?"
The two of them continued their bickering, but at that moment, the Mysterious Corpse began to stir. With a loud clap, its palms came together in a gesture of prayer, as if it were worshipping. It started to chant a long, ancient language filled with mysterious power. As it spoke, the pyramid began to tremble violently. We had just managed to rise from the mossy ground when the quake knocked us back down again.
That wasn't all; something even more astonishing was about to happen. The Mysterious Corpse opened its mouth, and an eerie energy surged throughout its body, forming into a tornado that swirled around it. Meanwhile, the debris in the tomb began to gather rapidly in one spot, stacking layer upon layer until it formed a three-meter tall Stone Giant that reached up to the ceiling of the tomb—an imposing and terrifying sight.
Then, the eerie energy from the Mysterious Corpse surged into the Stone Giant's body, causing it to come to life and start moving toward us!
"A battle puppet?"
Ghost Granny's face changed dramatically as her hair stood on end. She exclaimed, "It has truly become sentient! If we don't eliminate this demon, chaos will surely follow when we leave here!"
Zhengyang drew his sword and focused on the Stone Giant. He said solemnly, "Truly impressive for a prehistoric super civilization to master such divine languages. Even we in Huaxia can only look on in envy. They harnessed the power of the five elements to manipulate earth and stone, constructing battle puppets and imbuing them with vitality using their own eerie energy. What a clever tactic! As long as this evil remains, there will be no peace in the world!"
Roar!
At that moment, an astonishing roar echoed from above in the Grand Corridor, like a beast howling in fury. Then footsteps reverberated through the corridor!
"Damn it! Just when things couldn't get worse!"
Big Mouth Lee lamented with a mournful expression, "Something up there is chasing us down!"
"Both of these creatures are formidable; we won't be able to escape."
Zhengyang said gravely, "You all confront whatever is up there; it's just a resilient corpse with no other strengths. Even if you can't defeat it, you must buy us some time! Granny and I will deal with this Mysterious Corpse to eliminate any future threats!"
"Understood!"
"Ghost Granny" shouted loudly, pulling out the "Divine Whip" and charging alongside "Zhengyang" towards the "Mysterious Corpse."
The "Mysterious Corpse" was quite sinister as well; upon seeing this scene, it slightly curled its lips into a very eerie smile, clearly showing some intelligence. The "Divine Language" it uttered grew faster and faster, and before long, a chilling wind began to swirl in the tomb. The "Stone Giant," propelled by the wind, lunged towards "Old Madman" and the figure in green. With each step it took, the tomb trembled violently. When it finally reached them, it simply lifted its foot to stomp on "Old Madman." Fortunately, "Old Madman" was quick enough; as soon as he saw the giant's foot descending, he rolled away just in time!
Boom!
In an instant, debris began to fall from the ceiling of the tomb. The ground where the "Stone Giant" stepped cracked open, making my heart race. Goodness, if this guy kept rampaging for much longer, this pyramid would probably collapse!
"I'll hold it off!"
After getting back on her feet, "Ghost Granny" shouted at "Zhengyang," "You go take down that 'Mysterious Corpse.' Capture the leader first!"
"Zhengyang" didn't say much; he simply replied with a "Got it," then charged towards the "Mysterious Corpse."
At that moment, footsteps from the "Grand Corridor" became increasingly clear.
"Everyone prepare!"
"Bald Qiang" loaded his gun with a click and glanced at me before saying in a deep voice, "Among us, you guys control that 'American Ginseng' first, then you go finish it off!"
