I could fall asleep at the drop of a hat, no matter if someone was setting off firecrackers or tossing grenades nearby. I slept more soundly than a dead pig!
My sleep quality had reached a point where I was completely oblivious to what was happening around me.
After all, there were still Ghost Granny and Zhengyang around; if anything went wrong, I had tall companions to back me up, so what was there to fear?
I must have slept for nearly six or seven hours when I was finally jolted awake by the harsh sound of a stone door being pulled open. Groggy, I opened my eyes to find it was already quite late. Ghost Granny and Zhengyang had somehow found some junk to use as fuel and had managed to start a fire inside the temple.
By the light of the flames, I saw that the stone door of the temple was being pulled open little by little. The rusty sliding mechanism emitted a creaking sound, and cold winds blew in through the gap, causing the flames in the temple to flicker wildly.
Zhengyang and Ghost Granny had already been alerted; they were crouched on either side of the stone door, clearly preparing an ambush.
Seeing the situation unfold, I knew I couldn't go back to sleep. I grabbed my Hundred Slicing Blade and quietly made my way toward the entrance, eventually pressing myself against Zhengyang's back. Ghost Granny and Zhengyang glanced at me and made a shushing gesture. I nodded in response, and the three of us focused intently on the doorway of the temple.
Creak…
Creak…
Something outside was still pulling at the door, and in an instant, a gap of over ten centimeters had opened!
"There's light inside!"
At that moment, a sharp male voice rang out from outside: "Shall we go in and take a look?"
That voice sounded familiar. As soon as I heard it, my eyes lit up—wasn't that Saint Void Child?
When those Ghost Residents were causing a ruckus, Saint Void Child and Bear Big were among the first to leave. However, they left just moments after Big Mouth Lee and his group. I remembered seeing them together with Big Mouth Lee in the noble district before they departed!
Now that Saint Void Child was outside, didn't that mean Big Mouth Lee was out there too?
I felt a surge of excitement and quickly prepared to help open the door. However, Zhengyang was quicker; he rushed forward and grabbed hold of the door from inside, ready to pull it open. Clearly, he recognized that it was Saint Void Child outside.
With both of us pulling together, the stone door soon swung open. Standing outside were two figures—one tall and one short—none other than Saint Void Child and Bear Big! However, illuminated by the flickering light of the campfire inside the temple, they appeared somewhat shadowy and eerie. Their clothes were tattered and stained with what looked like blood, giving them an appearance as if they had just survived an incredibly grueling battle.
Upon seeing their expressions, a sudden jolt ran through me. I quickly shifted my gaze beyond them, and under the soft glow emitted by the energy shield of the Heart of Atlantis, the outside remained bright. However, where were Bald Qiang and the others?
Saint Void Child and Bear Big were clearly taken aback upon seeing us, seemingly surprised as well; they obviously hadn't expected to encounter us here.
"Where's Big Mouth Lee?"
Zhengyang asked in a low voice from the doorway, "Aren't you with Big Mouth Lee?"
At the mention of "together," both Saint Void Child and Bear Big visibly trembled, as if waking from a dream. They hurriedly turned to glance behind them, then squeezed into the temple. Without further ado, they began pulling up the door while dragging Saint Void Child along, saying to us, "This is a long story; let's close the door first!"
Something had indeed gone wrong!
A sense of foreboding rose within me. However, seeing Saint Void Child and Bear Big's demeanor, it was as if something was chasing them from behind. I understood that now was not the time for conversation; I could only help them pull the door shut.
Once the door was secured, Saint Void Child and Bear Big let out a huge sigh of relief. They silently walked over to sit by the campfire, warming their hands over the flickering flames. For some reason, as the firelight illuminated their faces, I felt as though a shadow had cast over them, making their expressions appear somewhat strange.
"What exactly happened?"
Zhengyang asked in a serious tone. "Where are the others?"
Saint Void Child remained silent, trembling as he fished a cigarette out of his jacket pocket. He leaned over to light it on the fire and took several deep puffs before letting out a heavy sigh and muttering three words: "Something went wrong."
Seeing him like this made me anxious, so I couldn't help but ask, "What happened?"
With another sigh, Saint Void Child finally began to explain the situation.
When those Ghost Residents started causing chaos, they had indeed been running with Big Mouth Lee. Later, when we encountered them in Noble District, we were behind them while they were in front. Suddenly, the Ghost Residents trailing behind turned around and attacked us. In an instant, we three became like meat sandwiched in a hamburger—caught in quite a predicament. Seeing this situation unfold, Big Mouth Lee realized that simply running away wouldn't work. They kept drawing the Ghost Residents toward themselves while we followed behind, which only increased our pressure. Thus, Big Mouth Lee made a tough decision—to take another route!
After splitting up, Big Mouth Lee and his group experienced their own harrowing struggles before finally entering this temple area and managing to find safety. Based on timing, they must have entered much earlier than us three!
However, because they had taken a different path, their entry point was not quite the same as ours; they had come in alarmingly close to Orion Temple!
They were not foolish; they knew that the places where those Ghost Residents dared not pursue them were definitely more dangerous. They didn't just stand around waiting mindlessly. After a brief discussion, they decided to scout the surroundings for safety before waiting for us.
This decision was not wrong, but unfortunately, their luck was terrible—they directly entered the Orion Temple!
Without the Ghost Granny, that cunning old woman, with just their limited eyesight, how could they possibly gauge the depths of the Orion Temple? In fact, aside from the eerie energy that was somewhat frightening, I couldn't discern much about it either. However, since Ghost Granny was so wary of it, I believed there must be something extraordinary inside!
"Ah, this is really worrisome!"
After hearing this, Ghost Granny said, "When I stood outside that temple, I heard chanting from within and faint roars. Clearly, something terrifying is imprisoned in there. That's why I hurriedly retreated. I never expected you kids would recklessly run into a place even I dared not enter!"
So that's how it was!
However, at that moment, I wasn't in the mood to delve into these matters. I was concerned about Xiao Xiao and her friends' safety and danger. I grabbed Saint Void Child and asked him, "What exactly happened after you went in?"
"We saw many ghosts—many, many..."
Saint Void Child's face turned pale as fear washed over him. Crouched by the campfire, he began to tremble and stuttered to us, "Inside were all the souls of priests turned into phantoms. They were very powerful; their Daoist practice was exceptionally deep. Three thousand priests had transformed into ghosts and were chanting before a statue. When we entered, they... attacked us!"
Damn! It turned out to be just like what Ghost Granny said. How profound must that old woman's Daoist practice be!
