To my surprise, there were murals here, a truly sensational discovery. Honestly, I was instantly captivated! Atlantis, the Atlantis Civilization, it was clear from her words that the civilization of Atlantis had been preserved through murals! If I could see that mural, it would likely bring to light a history that had long been denied by humanity in the Fifth Civilization Era. At the very least, I could uncover what had happened in ancient Atlantis. If luck was on my side, I might even learn the purpose of Sauron and Dong Tong's visit! My breath grew heavy as I fixed my gaze on her and asked, "So, do you know what they did after they went to your Homeland?"
"They didn't stay in Homeland; they passed through it to the end of the starry river, the origin of the Holy Light Civilization, which is the former capital of Atlantis—Poseidonia!" She lowered her head, and sadness filled her eyes as she softly said, "Unfortunately, when our Homeland was trampled upon, we could only watch helplessly from the sidelines, silently enduring the humiliation..."
After hesitating for a moment, I decided to voice my thoughts directly: "Can you take us to see your Homeland?" She remained silent, clearly hesitant; their Homeland must be incredibly important to them. "Regardless, we need to go there!" I emphasized, feeling anxious about potentially angering her in this delicate situation and ruining everything. However, this was something that had to be done. After some thought, I switched to a gentler tone to explain: "I've already told you that our main purpose for coming here is to track down those two who first arrived. Wherever they go, we will follow! I assure you that we will not act recklessly in your Homeland!"
She raised her head and looked at me seriously: "Can I trust you?"
"What do you think?" I forced a smile. "If I had ulterior motives against you, would I still be standing here calmly negotiating under your weapons?" She remained silent as I patiently waited. Time seemed to freeze at that moment; my anxiety grew. If she refused, I genuinely didn't know what to do! All I could do was hope. The ten minutes felt exceptionally long; despite the cold underground air, I was sweating profusely. Finally, she made a decision and looked at me: "I hope you're not deceiving me; otherwise, I'll use all my clan's strength to keep you here!"
"Let your friends come out, especially that old lady hiding over there!" My heart raced at her words; she had already noticed my plans. It seemed they were genuinely willing to cooperate this time. I gestured for everyone inside to come out.
"Hey! If you're going to die, die on your own; don't think you can trick me out!" As soon as my gesture fell, Big Mouth Lee's loud voice echoed. He obediently followed after being shot a fierce glare by Zhengyang. The Serpent King waved his hand lightly, and the group of Serpent Women stepped back immediately. They retreated four hundred meters away to ensure that Zhengyang and the others wouldn't be shot dead upon emerging... It seemed like a sincere buy-one-get-one-free deal! But caution must not be discarded!
Leading us was the Serpent King. Along the way, I subtly probed into their situation. At first, she was wary of my questions; however, seeing that I wasn't asking anything life-threatening allowed her to relax and engage in conversation with me. This provided me with quite a bit of insight. In fact, they were indeed descendants of Atlanteans! The fall of the Atlantis Civilization occurred around nine thousand years ago; however, aside from the first generation who survived by chance, subsequent descendants became increasingly disconnected from their heritage. Their cultural memory of Atlantis faded with each generation until her generation had almost no civilization left—they lived in primitive tribal conditions and barely managed to survive.
Due to this cultural loss, they could no longer decipher the murals left behind in Homeland and retained only their language through oral tradition to record their experiences and changes over these nine thousand years since Atlantis sank. Thus, regarding the once-glorious prehistoric Quaternary super civilization, she wasn't very clear either; all she knew was that they were great descendants of Atlantis who sank beneath the sea for some reason over nine thousand years ago. However, during its sinking, something seemed to have protected Poseidonia—the capital of Atlantis—so it wasn't swallowed by water and mud like other cities.
A small portion of people miraculously survived without being killed during the collapse of the continent! These survivors were their ancestors! For reasons unknown, this small group did not rebuild their city in Poseidonia but instead left it behind and excavated an Underground World from beneath the mud at sea! The ruins we saw in the Underground World were remnants of other cities of Atlantis; unfortunately for those cities—unlike Poseidonia—they lacked protection and were consumed by water and mud. Many ruins found by scientists searching for Atlantis likely belonged to these other cities!
As for what she referred to as Homeland—it was actually where her ancestors first excavated the Underground World after leaving Poseidonia; it was right next to Poseidonia's entrance! When her ancestors left Poseidonia, perhaps out of a desire to warn future generations, they recorded Atlantis' civilization and history through murals at that location. Unfortunately, their descendants ultimately rendered this effort futile because they had long forgotten their once-great civilization and could no longer understand the murals left behind!
Initially, they had been digging through underground ruins searching for food among those remnants because living underground for so long caused changes in their eyes and height—similar to cave dwellers—they became shorter and sensitive to light! As for why they transformed into snakes instead of fish—I couldn't quite figure that out. One could only say that legendary human ancestors were often depicted as serpentine beings; many myths feature creatures with human heads and serpent bodies—like Nüwa—perhaps this is a form of atavism!
I found their lengthy evolution fascinating and engaged deeply in conversation with her about it until I lost track of time. As we spoke while walking further along together, she suddenly stopped and said: "We've arrived at my tribe; beyond my tribe lies our Homeland."
