Xiao Xiao?!
The Xiao Xiao who was taken by Nikola?
How did she end up here!
Moreover, I had interacted with Xiao Xiao for quite some time, but why did she seem different from the Xiao Xiao I knew?
This situation was not unfolding as I had anticipated!
"Are you Xiao Xiao?"
Logically, we had only been apart for a maximum of two hours. Even if she had completely changed her appearance, it shouldn't be possible for her not to recognize me, right? When I called her name, a strange smile spread across her face as she hurriedly replied, "It's me! It's me!"
Alright! Even if I was overthinking things for a moment, every expression on her face was almost exactly as I remembered. It felt like running into an old friend after a long separation in a crowd; when they suddenly call your name, there’s that fleeting moment of unfamiliarity. You instinctively freeze and need a moment to remember who they are!
Although it was dim here, it wasn't so dark that I couldn't see clearly. It wasn't that I was overthinking; it was just that this place felt eerie! No wonder I was suspicious, especially since we were still inside an ancient tomb. Caution was necessary!
After a brief hesitation, I prepared myself and decided to take advantage of her distraction to grab her by the neck. My index and middle fingers pressed against her throat to check for a pulse.
The skin felt warm; she definitely had body heat. Moreover, there was a pulse where my fingers pressed. All these signs indicated that this girl should be alive. Yet, for some reason, I still sensed something was off, but I couldn't pinpoint why.
"Brother Xia! She's alive! She's our Xiao Xiao!"
Bowl rushed over and took Xiao Xiao's hands in a friendly grip, chattering away. Xiao Xiao seemed to instinctively hide behind Bowl, looking at me timidly with fear flickering in her eyes.
As the saying goes, the eyes are the windows to the soul. The fear in Xiao Xiao's eyes didn't seem fake. Coupled with the fact that I had sensed the characteristics of a living person from her earlier, it was clear that Xiao Xiao had never experienced anything supernatural before. Just managing to stay conscious after everything she had been through was impressive; fear was only natural. With this thought, I felt somewhat relieved.
“Where is Nikola? Why is he letting you run around?”
“Oh! His physical body is sealed inside. He entrusted me to the Shaman guarding the mountain, and they forced me in here. His soul can't enter, so he stays nearby. I've tried to escape multiple times, but I can't get out of this cave!”
Hearing this made sense to me, so I didn't think much more about it.
“Do you know where Nikola's body is sealed?”
“I don't know either.”
After our conversation, her emotions seemed to have calmed down. At least she wasn't as frantic as before. When I asked her again, she shook her head and softly said, “When Nikola took me away, it wasn't long before I started feeling drowsy. By the time I was half asleep, I felt extremely cold. When I opened my eyes, I found myself here. I ran around randomly, and when I finally managed to get out of the cave entrance, four short, dark figures pushed me back in and even tied me up with ropes. I barely managed to break free from the ropes they used to bind me and escaped. But for some reason, the door to the tomb was closed. I hid in this place, unable to run or go back, which is how I ended up meeting you!”
“Did those Shamans harm you?”
“No! They haven't returned since they went out!” I thought those Shamans were probably the ones controlling the Ape Monster; they must have been dealt with by me long ago—there was no way they could come back!
I wanted to ask more questions, but then a bowl was suddenly shoved into my hands: “Alright, Brother Xia, can you stop asking? Let her rest properly!”
I responded with an “oh,” and noticed that Xiao Xiao seemed to believe her words completely. A strange smile flickered across her face for a moment before vanishing.
But I couldn't shake off the feeling that there was something awkward about her expression just now!
I looked at her with some doubt and noticed that her complexion appeared excessively pale, lacking any hint of color that a living person should have. If I hadn't personally checked her temperature and pulse—both confirming she was indeed alive—I might have thought she was a fresh Big Zongzi.
I stared at her for a long time; when no strange expressions appeared on her face again, I asked, “Can you find out Nikola's whereabouts?”
“I can!”
I nodded lightly, realizing that I wasn't unaware of it earlier, but now it seemed different. Was there something strange about this? I felt that Xiao Xiao had some issues, but I couldn't pinpoint it at the moment. "How about you lead us over there?"
Without a second thought, Xiao Xiao nodded and said, "I've walked back and forth several times; I remember the way. Just follow me!"
"Alright!"
I nodded and said, "Then you lead the way. Once we find the others, I'll take you all home."
Xiao Xiao responded with a soft "mm," then turned and walked toward the side of the Preparation Room. After reaching a corner in the southwest, she began to feel along the dark Tomb Wall. I felt my eyelids twitching; this Tomb Wall was made entirely of Hollow Bricks, sealed inside with Concentrated Sulfuric Acid. If she accidentally damaged one, her hand would be burned to a crisp!
I was about to remind Xiao Xiao when suddenly she pressed hard on one of the Hollow Bricks. It nearly scared me to death. Strangely enough, when she pressed it, that Hollow Brick sank into the wall, and then a mechanical clanking sound echoed through the tomb. Immediately after, with a loud rumble, a particularly fine door nearby slammed open!
It turned out to be a Secret Mechanism Door!
The Taoist Sect door opened with a bang, revealing darkness inside, and after waiting for a moment, no hidden arrows shot out.
I breathed a sigh of relief.
About ten seconds after the entire mechanism door opened, a cold wind rushed toward us, filling our heads and faces with an icy sensation that felt like every inch of skin and every pore was being pierced by needles…
