I realized that this old man, whom I barely knew, was about to meet his end in the belly of a fish. And it was all to buy us some time... even though that time would be of no use. I hadn't even had the chance to ask his name. We watched him move about, powerless to help... The scene was deeply poignant.
Countless late nights, I recalled this past event, filled with heartache. Faced with danger, I felt utterly helpless, merely watching as nothing could be done. That kind of pain is beyond what ordinary people can understand! Only by becoming stronger could I better protect myself and my friends! In that moment, I made a firm resolution: I could not continue living such an ordinary life.
Tears blurred my vision, and at the same time, Xiao Xiao fainted...
Not far away, a scream pierced the air. Numerous sharks splashed through the waves, the sea boiling like a pot, blood quickly staining a vast area of water. The old man vanished as if he had never existed, disappearing into the depths in an instant. The tragic sight brought tears to my eyes. The bowl cried out in sorrow, while Xiao Xiao longed to leap into the sea to save him, but she couldn't; jumping in would mean betraying the old man!
The bloody scene dissipated within minutes. That group of sharks, insatiable as ever, turned their attention back to us. Clearly, one old man was not enough to satisfy their hunger!
The sharks surged forward swiftly, their fins breaking the surface as they launched another attack on us. One bit down on the door panel and tugged fiercely, trying to flip it over and send us tumbling into the sea. We swung our daggers and struck at the sharks with our makeshift clubs; these efforts were hardly a concern for them.
The attacks grew more frenzied, threatening to bring us to our doom. Our minds went blank; all we could do was hack and smash. We clung to our last thread of hope—survival meant there was still a chance. The three of us on the door panel were nearly exhausted; our arms ached, reaching the limits of what our bodies could endure.
A shark lunged at me, and I swung my club with all my might. Just then, from the corner of my eye, I spotted hundreds of shark fins approaching from not far away—coming in thick clusters. My face turned pale; my entire body felt weak as if all will to fight had drained away. The bowl and Xiao Xiao saw it too; both collapsed onto the ground.
Damn it! Just when things couldn’t get worse! This was simply despair...
As that group of sharks drew closer, those beneath us suddenly ceased their attack. It was eerily quiet; I knew that calm often precedes a storm.
Damn it! You all seem to understand sharing good fortune! I certainly don't want to become a ghost! Time passed slowly for me like an eternity.
“It’s dolphins!” the Helmswoman exclaimed. In an instant, her face lit up with joy, a sweet smile gracing her lips. This atmosphere soon infected me too. Suddenly, I felt invigorated. Not just dolphins—there was a whole pod of them! I took a deep breath, dropped my weapon, and collapsed onto the ground; the bowl and Xiao Xiao also crouched down beside me, resting their chins on their hands as they stared wide-eyed at the sea surface.
"Help me!"
Since ancient times, there have been tales of dolphins saving people.
It is said that in the 5th century BC, the musician Arion was returning to Greece by ship when he was attacked by sailors who sought to rob him. After playing his final song, Arion jumped into the sea, where he was surrounded by sharks. Fortunately, a group of dolphins came to his aid, carrying him to the Peloponnesian Peninsula.
In 1959, the passenger ship "Río Atelero" exploded in the Caribbean Sea. Many passengers struggled in the water when a swarm of sharks appeared. Suddenly, a pod of dolphins showed up and charged at the sharks, turning a dire situation into safety for the stranded passengers.
To this day, scientists have not reached a consensus on why dolphins save people. Some believe that this virtue stems from dolphins' nurturing behavior towards their young. Others argue that dolphins are highly intelligent creatures and their heroic acts may be conscious decisions. There are also those who think that dolphins are playful and love to mimic, treating everything they encounter as toys.
According to feng shui principles, dolphins belong to water, sharks to fire, and humans to wood. Water nourishes wood and can overcome fire. The sound waves emitted by dolphins can disrupt the balance of sharks, leading them into confusion. When humans are in the sea, their magnetic field can summon both dolphins and sharks. Once dolphins encounter sharks, they become agitated and aggressive, often attacking the sharks, which usually results in victory for the dolphins. I don't personally believe in this theory, but I mention it here as a possible explanation.
A group of Bottlenose Dolphins swam over, occasionally leaping out of the water and striking the Great White Shark with their heads, encircling our makeshift raft. The dolphins continuously attacked, completely blocking the shark's path. Several dolphins swam beneath our raft and lifted it up like arrows released from a bow, propelling us deeper into the ocean.
We were likely carried by them throughout the night. Exhausted, we awoke to find a lifeboat not far away, bobbing in the waves; however, it appeared empty. The water here was deep black and eerily calm, resembling a vast mirror reflecting schools of fish swimming below. We had entered deep waters, and the dolphins had vanished without a trace. Damn it; fairy tales are all lies—those dolphins abandoned us! Well then, we would just have to reach shore ourselves!
I hurriedly woke up my companions and our Helmswoman. Using wooden sticks as paddles, we desperately rowed toward the lifeboat. No matter how comfortable our raft was, it couldn't compare to the safety of a lifeboat. At least it contained essential resources like fresh water and food that could sustain us for a while. We hadn't eaten for an entire night and were utterly exhausted. If not for this glimmer of hope before us, we might not have had the strength to continue.
Finally reaching the lifeboat, we found it empty—clearly another ghost ship adrift at sea after encountering disaster. At that moment, we didn't care about anything else; we climbed aboard and immediately began searching for food and fresh water. To our relief, we found some supplies stored away. The three of us feasted heartily; however, due to our extreme fatigue, we soon fell into a deep sleep. This powerless vessel could only drift with the currents on the ocean; we hoped not to encounter any storms—just hoping for mercy!
I don't know how long it had been when we were awakened by the cold sea breeze; it was completely dark now. The vast expanse of deep ocean was filled with stars—grand and magnificent. The sea surface was as tranquil as glass, reflecting the starlight in shimmering waves—it was breathtakingly beautiful. We three stared at this stunning scene in awe, forgetting everything else.
I had seen the serene green waters of the Li River and admired the mirror-like surface of West Lake but had never witnessed such grandeur as this ocean. The water here was not only deep black but also crystal clear like sapphire; it seemed one could see an enchanting world beneath its surface.
The anticipation flowed between the sea and the shore, where hope sang like the sweet call of a mermaid deep beneath the waves. The Azure Waves shimmered with the waiting of love, as the blue winds wandered through life.
Forgive my inability to describe it in words; I can only express it with two lines of poetry: "Oh sea, you are truly magnificent! Oh night view, you are breathtakingly beautiful!" To put it more artistically, "Facing the sea, spring blossoms!"
Our Vessel drifted on the ocean, moving forward with the Current. Bowl foolishly asked, "Brother Xia, where are we going?" "I have no idea!" To be honest, out in the vast ocean, these things are beyond our control. Fortunately, Xiao Xiao possessed a wealth of knowledge about the sea; otherwise, during this Survival in the Wilderness journey, we would have likely perished hundreds of times already.
During our drifting, I learned that Xiao Xiao's full name was Liu Xiaoxiao, and she lived with her adoptive father, making a living through transportation and fishing. They had quite a few legendary stories. The old man had originally planned to escort me out to sea and then retire, but unexpectedly lost his life. Due to her many experiences with storms and hardships, Xiao Xiao had become indifferent to everyone. If it weren't for this drifting journey, we might have just been passing strangers in each other's lives.
"Wow! So beautiful, so spectacular!" Bowl's eyes sparkled as he couldn't help but jump up and clap continuously, staring in awe at something not far away.
