A sudden rustling sound echoed through the cave as the startled bats flew back up to the ceiling.
That idiot's shout had disturbed the entire wall of bats, and countless pairs of red eyes turned to stare at me. Terrified, I switched off my miner's lamp, and the crimson eyes vanished instantly. The unique structure of a bat's eyes resembles a concave mirror, similar to the reflector inside a car's headlights, allowing them to focus incoming light onto a focal point for clearer vision. This was also why their eyes glowed when illuminated.
"What the hell are you turning off the light for? Bats are blind; they rely on echolocation! If you turn off the light, we’ll be blind too!" Big Mouth Lee cursed. His words made perfect sense, and I found myself unable to argue. I quickly turned the lamp back on.
Damn it! A gust of wind rushed past as the bats turned toward the light.
My scalp tingled, and Big Mouth Lee fell silent, clearly caught off guard by this turn of events. He lowered his head and stopped talking. I flicked on the lamp again, using the faint glow to guide my way forward.
"These bats are still sensitive to light; we can just sneak away!"
If these creatures were phototropic, then I was essentially carrying a lantern into a latrine—looking for death. We held hands and quietly felt our way along the cave walls, moving cautiously to avoid startling them.
As I stealthily approached an opening that resembled a passageway, I felt a cold wind sweep over me from above. Suddenly, two claws swooped down and grabbed at the wound left by the Tomb Guardian Beast, sending a sharp burning pain coursing through me. I let out a horrified scream!
Bang!
A gunshot rang out as Dong Tong shouted "Heart!" and fired in my direction. I jumped in fright, nearly crouching down. The large bat landed squarely on my head, reeking horribly. It was as if that bat was grinning at me with its foul mouth inches from my face. I quickly swatted it away and dashed to one side, pressing against the wall.
Dong Tong had saved me once again! Honestly, I was really grateful…
Just as I was about to crouch down, I braced myself with my hands against something soft and mushy on the ground. Raising my hand to my face, an overwhelming stench hit me, almost making me gag. What in the world was this?
"Night Bright Sand! Hahaha! Look at all this Night Bright Sand everywhere; we’ll get rich if we haul it out!" Night Bright Sand was bat droppings—so I'd fallen into a pile of dung! At that moment, I couldn't care less about that.
" Big Mouth Lee, damn your ancestors! Your loud mouth always brings trouble!" Sure enough, before he could finish speaking, a swarm of bats took flight!
Clang!
Zhengyang drew the Pure Jun Sword from behind him. He rarely took action, but the sword seemed to hum lightly in anticipation. The Bat swarm appeared to be less formidable, indicating that some malevolent entity was at play. His expression turned grave as he shouted, "Step back! There are Dirty Things here!"
No sooner had he spoken than the Bat swarm descended like a storm, fluttering down in a frenzy. It was as if the wind had swept through fallen leaves, causing them to scatter everywhere. Dong Tong's handgun fired bullets at an astonishing rate, resembling a jet of water. Zhengyang leaped up onto a high platform within the cave!
"To slay demons and protect the balance of yin and yang is our duty as cultivators! Abomination, meet your end!"
With a fierce shout, Zhengyang lunged toward the ceiling of the cave, aiming his strike at a massive creature hanging above. The creature had wings that resembled those of a Bat but bore a human face. I couldn't quite make out the situation in the air.
Clang! Clang! Clang!
The Pure Jun Sword struck the creature, producing sparks as if it were hitting iron. The creature flapped its wings and took flight. One hand emerged from its abdomen, a pale arm ending in dark claws with nails curved like hooks, reaching directly for the Pure Jun Sword.
In an instant, another even paler arm slammed into Zhengyang's chest, sending him crashing down beside me. He coughed up blood and jumped up with a gasp, yet his pure white clothing remained untouched by the Night Bright Sand!
This detail left me stunned for quite some time. Normally, one would avoid falling into such acidic filth as Night Bright Sand; even if someone fell into mud, their clothes would not come out spotless. There were only two explanations: either his clothing was made of a special material that required burning to cleanse after getting dirty, or his Daoist practice was so advanced that he could use vital energy to repel dirt!
"Is Zhengyang alright?"
Big Mouth Lee leaned over; he had taken down many Bats in the darkness and was hiding near me. I asked, "What is that creature flying above?"
"Not good! It looks like a vampire!"
"Be serious!"
"Flying Corpse!"
"Don't joke around; does a Flying Corpse need wings?"
"Perhaps it's a Winged Flying Corpse!" Big Mouth Lee said earnestly. If that thing hadn't swooped over my head, I might have believed him. Those weren't wings; they were clearly a cloak. Impressive—someone had actually cultivated their cloak into wings.
Big Mouth Lee was startled as well: "The Killing Intent is overwhelming; it can manipulate objects! Zhengyang might not be its match!"
According to the Mausoleum Secrets: "Earth God, Flying Corpse, Cursed Spirit, Beijun, Gathering of Spirits, Danglu, Zhi Fu—seven deities." These could be considered god-level monsters with considerable spiritual power. The abilities of the Flying Corpse ranked just below those of the Drought Demon, but this particular Flying Corpse fed on bat blood and could be considered a combat powerhouse among its kind—truly formidable!
This cave must have an exit; otherwise, how could such a monstrous creature sustain itself by consuming blood? Just thinking about it sends chills down my spine. How many lives, both human and animal, would it take to create its monstrous existence?
The Flying Corpse and Zhengyang were locked in a fierce battle in the air! As I observed, I caught sight of a pair of blood-red eyes. Just one glance sent shivers through me. It was far more terrifying than the first time I encountered ghostly eyes. A swarm of frenzied bats suddenly flew out from a nearby cave.
Zhengyang struck the creature's "wing" with his weapon, and astonishingly, the wing disintegrated instantly. Countless headless monstrosities flew towards us, their necks riddled with bloody holes, heading straight for the cave entrance we had just seen.
Despite losing its wings, the creature remained suspended in the air, exchanging blows with Zhengyang.
“Roar!!”
The Flying Corpse landed on the cave ceiling and, like a torrent of water, turned and lunged toward me. Its sharp claws glimmered ominously in the darkness. “What the hell? It's coming for me?” I drew my Azure Dark Sword, preparing to leap up and stab at it!
I bent my knees slightly and pushed off with my right foot to jump, but I felt my footing slip unexpectedly, causing me to lose my balance and crash hard to the ground. I landed face-first in Night Bright Sand, which smelled horrid and nearly knocked me out! The Flying Corpse halted mid-lunge, seemingly searching for something.
“Hahaha!” A burst of laughter erupted from Big Mouth Lee as he saw my face covered in Night Bright Sand. His laughter was ill-timed; the Flying Corpse twitched slightly and adjusted its position in mid-air, reaching for Big Mouth Lee. In that instant, I realized: “Quick! Cover yourself in Night Bright Sand!”
Night Bright Sand had a strong odor that could mask our Yang Qi. This meant that the Flying Corpse relied on scent to locate its prey. Once we concealed our scent, it would be like a blind person! Big Mouth Lee quickly understood and rolled around in the filth.
Seeing that it couldn't find us, the Flying Corpse let out a piercing howl that echoed ominously. At that moment, Zhengyang rushed toward it with his sword drawn; they clashed fiercely within the cave.
Squeak! Squeak! Squeak!!
A series of sharp cries pierced my ears. The sound resembled that of mice squeaking; before one cry ended, several more followed. From the walls emerged several giant white-headed rats!
“Gaochang Rat!” I suddenly realized; this was not from the old man's Western Lord's Tomb? Upon hearing this, Big Mouth Lee's legs went weak as he nearly rolled his eyes back in shock, exclaiming, “I must have committed sins in my past life to end up in this cursed place again!”
The white-haired rats pushed through the Night Bright Sand and charged toward us. They were clearly taking advantage of us. If we were to confront them head-on, it might not end well! In the animal kingdom, humans are among the weakest; without using our brains, we would surely meet our doom.
“Oh my goodness!”
Big Mouth Lee suddenly exclaimed, "There are actually three or four of them!" As soon as he finished speaking, two figures came running toward us. Upon closer inspection, I realized it was Bald Qiang and Dong Tong. After their fierce battle with the Bat, they were covered in blood and dirt, which had kept the Flying Corpse from noticing them. "Where's Uncorrupted Bones?" I felt something was off; that guy had disappeared as soon as he entered the cave!
"Of course, that bastard is probably hiding somewhere enjoying himself! Uncorrupted Bones has embarrassed the ghost realm to no end!" To be honest, I was starting to doubt Uncorrupted Bones' abilities; perhaps he was just a name without substance!
"Do we have any bullets left?"
"We're out of bullets; we used them all up fighting the Pig-Headed Bat!"
"It's Pig-Faced Bat!" Big Mouth Lee interrupted her. "We can't take down Gaochang Rat with brute force!"
"What do you suggest?"
"Run!" With that, Big Mouth Lee dashed toward a stone wall.
Bang!
Without hesitation, Bald Qiang shot at a Gaochang Rat. The large rat ran three steps before collapsing dead. The other rats quickly swarmed in, devouring the carcass until only bones remained!
" Qiang, well done! A few more shots!" After hearing this, Bald Qiang scratched his head and grimaced, "No more; that was a glory bullet!" A glory bullet is what soldiers leave for themselves as a final act of loyalty.
"What are we going to do? Zhengyang is busy fighting the Flying Corpse and can't help us! And we're surrounded by seven or eight Gaochang Rats! What should we do?" I asked.
"I actually have an idea!" Dong Tong finally spoke up. If it weren't for her plan, we might not stand a chance against the Gaochang Rats!
