As we approached the cave entrance, a small Azure Snowball flew in, surrounded by White Mist. It was about the size of a fist. Suddenly, the snowball spread its wings and flapped them, sending a gust of White Mist towards us. We instinctively dodged out of the way.
"Damn it, am I the only one attracting these things?" I shouted. There were four or five of us here; why was it coming straight for me? The snowball wasn't moving very fast and collided with Gongye Zhu. My hand trembled slightly, causing the bead to roll away. The Snowball clung to the bead, rolling around on the ground.
As the Snowball settled on the ground, the crystal blue White Mist gradually evaporated, revealing a pure white Moth. Its body resembled a snowball—crystal clear and translucent—with only its two pairs of wings adorned with slight golden scales. You could see the veins in its wings, and within its pupal abdomen, countless tiny insects seemed to wriggle. It looked like an ordinary Moth, yet it instilled an overwhelming sense of fear; its eyes glowed with an eerie blue light.
We exchanged glances and suddenly realized, "It's an Ice Moth!"
Big Mouth Lee curiously leaned closer, brushing his hand against Li the Traitor as if he were using some kind of conditioner. He approached cautiously, bending down to observe it closely, like a child watching ants. He reached out a hand to grab the Moth. Just then, a sharp voice shouted, "Don't move! Let go!" We turned to see Uncorrupted Bones yelling at him as he kicked Big Mouth Lee aside. "This Ice Moth is dangerous!" With that, he pinched the Moth with one finger. In an instant, a dark blue White Mist erupted from within the Moth, and Uncorrupted Bones' finger began to freeze. I could almost hear the sound of ice forming.
Gradually, half of Uncorrupted Bones' arm was covered in a layer of ghostly blue ice...
We watched in horror as Big Mouth Lee fell to the ground, repeatedly expressing his relief. However, we continued to watch as Uncorrupted Bones slowly froze until his entire body was encased in blue ice blocks; only then did the Moth completely vanish. I gasped in shock, "Damn it, this thing is powerful!"
Bald Qiang picked up a Shovel and was about to strike Uncorrupted Bones with it when there was a clang as some ice shards fell away. Realistically speaking, even if he was still alive, being wrapped in such ice would mean certain death once rescued. Moreover, he was just an unfortunate Uncorrupted Bones. Just as we were about to leave, we heard a cracking sound behind us and turned to see that the ice on Uncorrupted Bones had shattered like broken glass and was falling away.
Yet I wasn't surprised; if he dared to pinch that Moth, he must have had a way out. As for his motives for doing so, I couldn't say for sure—perhaps it was just a display of confidence.
"Refreshing summer chill! Tsk tsk! These Moths haven't matured yet!" Uncorrupted Bones stretched his arms and yawned before smiling. "I used up some Killing Intent fighting those Yin Soldiers earlier; this is just what I needed to recharge!" Hearing this made me scrutinize Uncorrupted Bones from head to toe; over a thousand years ago he had been a Demon yet knew what 'recharge' meant—there had to be something extraordinary about his background.
We continued forward; it was only about a hundred meters to the cave entrance. Several more snowballs flew through the air. Bang! Bang! A series of gunshots rang out as those Snowballs fell to the ground. They landed with a thud and released White Mist that formed an ice wall across the icy Passageway.
"Don't shoot! It'll attract more Ice Moths! We need to run..."
Suddenly there was a sound like heavy rain hitting windows; the walls of the ice Passageway began to move. The seemingly smooth surface of ice started shedding crystals as a large swarm of Ice Moths flapped their wings and flew towards us from behind...
A stronger wind began to blow in our direction; before we knew it, a group of Ice Moths was already right on top of us...
"Quick, run towards the cave entrance! There's a river over there; these bugs are afraid of water!" Uncorrupted Bones sprinted ahead, faster than anyone else. I couldn't help but laugh, "Wow! So much Killing Intent, you could borrow another five hundred years with that!"
"Do you think I'm a pig? With this much Killing Intent, do you want me to turn into ice shards? Even a god would run away from this!"
After running for a few minutes, we successfully escaped the frozen tomb passage.
Listening to the sound of water, it was only about ten meters away. We hadn't taken many steps when we reached the end of the underground cavity and turned a corner. To our surprise, a trench appeared before us, about three to four meters wide. Who would have thought there would be such a hidden channel beneath the vast desert?
Before I could take a closer look, I felt a chill wash over me, as if thousands of steel needles were piercing my back. The cold instantly spread through my body along with my blood. "Damn it, just my luck! I'm going to freeze!" Imagining myself turning into an ice pop made me shiver all over.
In the chaos, Big Mouth Lee and Bald Qiang also took several hits, and Zhengyang's hand was slapped as well. Big Mouth Lee lost all composure and yelled as he jumped into the pool ahead. Uncorrupted Bones dashed in like a wild horse, and I followed closely behind. We all jumped into the water like dumplings being tossed in.
The frost that had formed on us disappeared immediately, and even the ice began to melt. We hid underwater, looking up at the surface. It was like meteors falling, splashing into the water and quickly forming a thick layer of ice above us.
"This doesn't make sense; water extinguishes fire, so what's going on? Damn it, how can water defeat ice? If water can melt the ice on us, then how can it freeze again?" I pondered deeply but couldn't grasp the reasoning behind it. Just then, a voice called out, "Kid, swim with Uncorrupted Bones; otherwise, you'll die staying here!"
Later on, I finally understood the principle behind it. Water extinguishes fire and creates ice; this elemental theory applies in nature. However, water flowing from glaciers carries old yang energy within it. The Ice Moth and Old Yin entities that had accumulated for thousands of years couldn't withstand this flow of old yang energy. Thus, when Old Yin encountered old yang, it naturally dissipated without a trace. The layer of cold ice that formed on the surface was merely an illusion; it never actually touched the water's surface, so old yang energy couldn't suppress Old Yin energy.
We swam for about a hundred meters before daring to surface for air. Big Mouth Lee, Zhengyang, and Bald Qiang had ventured further away; however, we didn't see Dong Tong or Uncorrupted Bones anywhere. Uncorrupted Bones was already dead, so there was nothing to worry about; but we were concerned for Dong Tong.
Fifty meters away, the river turned a corner where some light shone from the dark channel. A group of Snowballs fluttered in the air when suddenly there was commotion and shadows flickered. I thought I saw a figure rushing towards the frozen Passageway; although it moved incredibly fast and disappeared in an instant, I recognized it: "Isn't that Dong Tong? Has she lost her mind?" I gasped nervously. After about five or six minutes, that figure jumped into the river.
Bald Qiang cursed angrily, "Damn it! This deadweight is making me go save her again!"
Just as we were about to jump in to rescue her, we soon saw Dong Tong's head pop up from the water. Bald Qiang grinned widely but quickly froze in shock as thousands of crystal-blue snowballs swerved through the dark channel towards us. Terrified, we dove back underwater...
I took a breath and followed suit; Dong Tong and Zhengyang gathered around from the water as well. The sound of Moths splashing against the surface echoed above us as another layer of ice formed quickly.
The water was originally dim and filled with a biting cold, but at that moment, all fear was completely driven away. With the help of the blue light on the surface, we could see many large fish slowly swimming beneath us. These fish were flat and elongated, shimmering with scales, measuring about seventy to eighty centimeters in length. I suspected they were Blind Catfish, but the largest of that species only grows to ten centimeters. The mutation of these creatures was quite terrifying.
We swam for over a hundred meters when that group of fish began to chase us, causing an itch on our legs and bodies. My face started to turn purple from holding my breath, so I quickly surfaced for air. The blue light faded, and a layer of ice formed fifty to sixty meters away. Some Moths that hadn’t fully perished were flapping on the icy surface. Moths are drawn to fire; it seems they don’t change even when faced with these Monsters!
We dove back into the water and swam another hundred meters or so. Zhengyang and the others were on the shore, taking off their outer clothes to dry while watching me swim over. I was utterly exhausted; honestly, I hadn’t been in the water since I swam in the Rong River ten years ago, and this time it had worn me out.
Bald Qiang jumped into the river and fished out a large fish, his eyes squinting with delight. “This is a good catch!” He quickly pulled out a dagger and sliced the fish into thin pieces. He started chewing on it voraciously, finishing one piece in no time. Then he cut several more pieces and offered them to us. “This is really good; you have to savor it—better than dragon meat!” I took a bite; surprisingly, there was no fishy taste. The flesh was tender and quite tasty.
Zhengyang was a vegetarian and didn’t even look at it. The others devoured it hungrily! I glanced around, feeling like someone was missing. “Hey! Have you seen Sister Dong?” After my question, everyone replied, “Wasn’t she with you?” “No! I thought she was following you!”
“Oh no! She wouldn’t have gotten into trouble, would she? This is bad; we haven’t even reimbursed her membership fee yet!” Big Mouth Lee exclaimed in panic, sounding as if he were in deep pain.
“Are you even human saying that?”
“Good lesson!” Someone emerged from the water—it was Dong Tong. I rushed over and pulled her out. “Sister Dong, I must ensure your safety! It was dangerous for you to run back alone!” She didn’t argue but pulled something from her pocket. “Returning what belongs to its owner!”
“Gongye Zhu!” At that moment when I received the pearl, I was shocked. She had risked her life just for a pearl? “Have you lost your mind? The pearl isn’t important!”
“No need for more words; when I came back earlier, I sensed something following us. It’s dangerous here; we need to leave quickly!”
Before she could finish speaking, waves began to ripple across the surface of the water, one after another reaching the shore. It seemed like a fountain had erupted; the entire pool looked as if it were boiling and starting to steam…
Oh no! Something monstrous was indeed about to emerge…
