A figure lunged toward me, swirling like a spinning wheel. As that skin drew closer, I shouted, "Damn it!" and drew the Azure Dark Sword, swinging it at the skin. To my surprise, the skin stood upright in mid-air and formed a gesture as if holding a sword with both hands.
I pressed down on the sword and continued to chop down. The skin flopped lifelessly to the ground. It was like chopping through mud; no matter how I struck, I couldn't break through. Just as I was about to pull my sword back, the skin wrapped itself around the blade completely. It danced around with my sword, as if it were made of soft mud that wouldn't fall.
Zhengyang frowned slightly, clearly angered. The principle of attacking strength with strength was less effective than overcoming softness with softness. Zhengyang pulled out the Suan Ni Rope with his left hand and threw it onto my sword, wrapping it around like a line around a pillar. He tugged at the thin rope, and I lost my grip on the sword as it was completely yanked away. "This is evil!" he exclaimed, biting his middle finger and drawing blood across the skin. A wisp of black smoke rose from it, visible to the naked eye, swirling like blue lightning. The skin suddenly fluttered open and lay flat on the ground before puffing up like a sail and lunging at Zhengyang.
Zhengyang raised his left foot in a stance resembling "Golden Rooster Stands on One Leg," drawing out the Pure Jun Sword and pointing its tip toward the ground. In an instant, he swept the sword across his chest, as if wielding seven or eight swords simultaneously, creating dozens of sword flowers that sliced through the skin. Seeing no way to evade, the skin turned and lunged at me. "What the hell! Why is everything coming at me?" Just as the skin was about to pounce, I heard a tearing sound of fabric, followed by countless butterflies appearing in the air.
The skin was sliced into pieces by Zhengyang's flurry of sword flowers... I stood there dumbfounded; with skills like that, he would surely win gold every year at the Olympics! I never expected there could be such a formidable person in this world!
"That Foreigner managed to get in here; there must be a passage!"
Zhengyang and I searched around but found no other exits. My gaze returned to the Poplar Coffin; I noticed that it didn't fit well with its base, clearly placed there later. Zhengyang and I exchanged glances and instinctively went to pry open the coffin, but it wouldn't budge at all, as if glued in place.
I scanned inside; there was a Sheepskin Mat at the bottom of the coffin along with a few broken jars and some ordinary Amber Ornaments—nothing else at all. This type of Tomb was extremely rare; it couldn't possibly be the original coffin of the deceased. Even in a mother-and-child coffin arrangement, two identical coffins would be used, and even false coffins would contain Real Persons.
Zhengyang said, "You built such a large tomb; how could you not spare a few burial items? Could there be some special reason?" I pondered over historical Tombs and realized that none had this kind of structure. Only during the Western Han dynasty did someone like Yang Wangsun insist on being buried naked directly in the ground—such "heretics" were exceedingly rare and practically reversed history.
I slapped my forehead and shouted, "The passage must be under the mat!" I reached down to pull at the leather mat; beneath it were three or four wooden boards. I pried one loose and revealed a gap underneath. When I completely pulled out the board, a stone button popped up from below. In an instant, I understood and yelled, "Zhengyang! I've triggered a mechanism!"
Before I could finish speaking, there was a loud bang as the Yumen slammed shut. Dozens of crossbows emerged from around the tomb walls, ready to fire their bolts at us. Zhengyang lifted the coffin lid and kicked me toward it; I crashed into the stone coffin just as he tossed aside the lid and slipped inside while it fell back down. The moment it closed, bolts flew in all directions; we could only hear thuds echoing inside.
Just as we caught our breath, a hand reached up from beneath us and yanked us down forcefully.
With a loud crash, Zhengyang and I fell hard... but that hand vanished without a trace...
I looked around this main burial chamber; indeed, it measured over two hundred square feet and was empty except for two coffins suspended in the center—one large and one small—like a couple's joint burial site. The entire floor was covered with fourteen Bronze Coffins except for one gap that resembled a rearranged Nine Palaces.
When I got up, Zhengyang had already surrounded one of the central coffins with an intense gaze that kept changing expression; he even pinched his clothing's hem nervously. Zhengyang took out a Yang-style compass and focused intently on that bronze coffin. As I approached, I noticed that the compass didn't move at all—it seemed to encounter an incredibly strong magnetic field that fixed its needle in place.
"Green... Bronze Coffin..."
The Mausoleum Secrets specifically illustrated Bronze Coffins and marked them as evil numbers; Maoshan disciples were forbidden from using them. The Ancestor Master had written a prohibition character with cinnabar ink on them. A Bronze Coffin is typically used only when the corpse has transformed! That means... My eyes widened in shock as I involuntarily gasped—damn it! Is my luck really this outrageous? On my first trip into a tomb, I've encountered a Big Zongzi?
My face turned pale as I hurriedly asked Zhengyang, "Isn't this burial chamber strange? The Killing Intent is so heavy that even the compass won't move?" The compass is essentially a divination tool; when Killing Intent or Eerie Energy is strong enough, it spins rapidly. Once locked into position by magnetic fields, not even nine oxen could pull that needle away.
Zhengyang stared blankly at the compass in his hand, then looked at me with a strange expression. After hesitating for a moment, he pointed toward the Bronze Coffin and said slowly, "The Evil Qi Cavern has been found, it's inside... this coffin!"
"You mean... the Evil Qi Cavern is inside this coffin?"
I heard Zhengyang swallow hard. Gritting his teeth, he said, "What’s contained within this Bronze Coffin is definitely a Big Zongzi. We might be facing a life-or-death situation..."
What the hell! Is it that serious? Am I really going to meet my end on my first expedition? I refused to believe fate could be so cruel. I continued to scan the surroundings and noticed a steel dagger on the ground, along with several backpacks. Even if they turned to dust, I would recognize them. "This is Big Mouth Lee's dagger, and those are Dong Tong's backpacks. So they have been here?"
"Let's search some more; there must be more clues!"
The tomb chamber was about two hundred square meters large, and it was dark in the depths. There seemed to be something on the ground. As Zhengyang and I approached, we nearly vomited. A lump of shredded flesh lay there, covered in hair, with black blood splattered everywhere, congealing into clumps. Judging by its appearance, this battle must have occurred no more than half a day ago.
"Strange, where did Big Mouth Lee and the others go? Even if they died, there should be a body. Could it be that thing ate them?" The 'thing' referred to the unknown creature inside the coffin.
"They're definitely alive! I sensed a faint Yang Qi in the tomb besides yours and mine!"
"Are you saying they still have a chance?"
"If we delay much longer, they might die! In my opinion, we have no choice but to take the risk and break open this Bronze Coffin."
In these Nine Deadly Tombs, who knows what kind of Zombie might be inside that coffin? Black Zombies, White Zombies, Jumping Corpses—those are manageable. But if it turns out to be something as fierce as a Drought Demon, we could be in serious trouble! If it’s even more terrifying than a Drought Demon, then with our strength, we would truly be facing a life-or-death situation!
"Let’s open the coffin. Knowing this is Nine Deadly Tombs means we can’t avoid this encounter! Eliminating this threat is also part of my mission!"
A mission? Were they not just helping me out of kindness? Well, there’s no such thing as a free lunch; perhaps this was merely a favor with strings attached. If I were to think maliciously about it, I might just end up as another free pawn.
I thought to myself, "It's over. If even someone like Zhengyang is scared out of his wits, how can I escape?" But then I reconsidered; if he wasn’t afraid, why should I be? So I nodded.
At this point, there truly was no better option.
Zhengyang said, "Listen carefully; when we open the coffin later, you need to take out the Master Copper Seal and shine it on the coffin lid. I'll restrain that thing; if it doesn’t rise up, then we’re safe. If it does turn into a corpse, you must use the copper seal to strike its head!"
Zhengyang and I used our swords to pry off the copper lid and gritted our teeth as we moved aside the heavy cover. Inside lay a coffin. Suddenly, a white mist began to rise before us, and cold air rushed toward my face. As I examined the coffin closely, I felt an eerie familiarity with it; after concentrating for a moment, I recalled that it had been documented in Mausoleum Secrets!
Coffin of Yanzi!! This is something similar to Sinking Wood, but it grows in a place of constant shade, taking hundreds of years to reach only the size of a bowl. A coffin made from such wood must be at least several thousand years old. The coffin made from this wood is known as the Coffin of Yanzi, and it is used to intimidate things that have already turned into corpses!
Bronze Coffin, Coffin of Yanzi...
What kind of transformation must occur for something to require this kind of object for intimidation?
“Should we open Zhengyang or not? If we do, that thing will jump out!”
“Let’s open it!”
The Pure Jun Sword was fully inserted into the coffin seam, and Zhengyang forcefully pried it open. Four or five coffins, each three feet long, flew out and embedded themselves into the opposite stone wall. Suddenly, a gust of cold wind rushed out from the coffin's seam, and the Iron Lantern I had lit instantly turned a ghastly green, glowing like ghostly fire!
I was momentarily stunned by the scene.
When a person lights a candle, ghosts blow out the lanterns. Ghosts blowing out lanterns means the fire goes out; however, this fire flared up in a way that defied logic, leaving me puzzled about what exactly was happening.
Before I could gather my thoughts, a series of thumping sounds erupted from within the coffin, followed by a foul odor that surged forth. There were several loud bangs as the coffin lid trembled, and the nails securing it began to pop up one by one. The lid moved more violently with each passing moment. My heart raced as I gripped the Master Copper Seal, my hand trembling uncontrollably. Zhengyang’s face had turned pale, his brows twitching!
“This is bad! Son of a Bitch, give me back my Brother Huzi! That damned thing is about to jump out!”
