"How did you know I have the Spirit Yang Body?" I asked seriously, but to the Fox Immortal, it seemed like a redundant question. "I don't know! We spirit beings can sense it naturally! Just like a baby knows to suckle as soon as it's born, who knows? This question is unnecessary!"
The Fox Immortal let out a chilling laugh, cackling away! I took three steps back. A living creature turned into a demon not only possessed human-like thinking abilities but was also far more terrifying than zombies or other ghostly entities. Many methods from the Mausoleum Secrets could only deal with ghosts and similar beings, leaving us helpless against a fox spirit.
"Forget it!" I steeled my heart, gritted my teeth, picked up a rock, and hurled it at the fox spirit. Naturally, it dodged effortlessly. Seizing the opportunity when the fox spirit relaxed its guard, I jumped back several steps, putting about ten meters between us. I fell heavily to the ground, my head cracking open and blood spilling everywhere. Grabbing a stick nearby, I became furious, swinging it wildly as I charged at the fox spirit.
To my surprise, I actually struck the fox spirit with the stick. However, it felt like hitting cotton; all my strength dissipated upon impact. The fox spirit leaned forward and shouted, "Fly!" Suddenly, an immense force surged through me from the stick, spreading throughout my body. In an instant, I was propelled three meters away and crashed heavily to the ground, unable to get back up.
Cackling! Cackling! Cackling!
Another wave of spine-chilling laughter echoed as the Fox Immortal seemed to change its demeanor, viciously declaring, "Come! Give me your life!"
At that moment, fear consumed me; there were no other thoughts in my mind. However, waiting for death was not an option—I had no choice but to fight for my life. Summoning courage from who knows where, I swung the wooden stick with all my might! "Damn your ancestors!" I cursed inwardly and charged forward.
Unfortunately, I was just a mortal; what good was courage against something like the Fox Immortal? It retaliated with a heavy punch that sent my stomach churning violently. I felt weightless as I flew backward; a sweet sensation surged in my throat as a strong smell of blood filled my mouth. I opened my mouth and spat out a mouthful of black blood. My consciousness blurred, and my eyelids felt heavy; I wanted to open them but couldn't.
"Heart!" A strange shout pulled me briefly back to reality.
A flash of white light struck the Fox Immortal, causing it to stagger backward. Its eyes glinted with ferocity as it retaliated fiercely. Transforming into a massive gray-furred fox, its fur bristled on its back as it bared its teeth menacingly. Like a cat pouncing on a chicken, it lunged at the small white light that was no bigger than a palm. With a powerful leap, it stomped down on the white mass. "Awo!" The fox spirit let out a cry of pain as its paw was caught by the white mass.
I forced my eyes open in disbelief at what was happening. In moments, that white mass began inflating like an air-filled balloon until it grew as large as an ox, quickly gaining the upper hand in size. The white mass pinned the fox spirit beneath it and opened its enormous mouth wide before swallowing its head whole. The entire process took mere seconds; the fox spirit became prey under the white mass's jaws. Moments later, the white mass shrank back down to palm size like a deflated balloon. Puffing contentedly with an adorably dazed expression, it stuck out its pink tongue and ran over to me before curling up and falling asleep beside me. Wasn't this Furball? With Furball around, I completely relaxed my guard and fainted.
When I woke up again, I found myself at Gao Lao's home. Lu Jianguo and Gao Lao were sitting around with Big Mouth Lee; they were all battered and bruised. Big Mouth Lee had lost a tuft of hair on his head that made him look like he had a monk's haircut. Seeing this made me want to laugh; however, any attempt to do so sent pain coursing through my body. I had to force myself to hold back and dared not look at Big Mouth Lee again!
"Thank goodness you're okay; otherwise, I'd have no way to explain this to the old man!"
With thick bandages wrapped around my head, I lay in bed in agony; even slight movements triggered violent coughing fits. Looking at Lu Jianguo's familiar face filled me with fear as I instinctively asked about the Fox Immortal.
"This youngster must be half asleep!" Gao Lao laughed heartily. "You've been asleep for three nights!"
"Three nights? That long?"
"Yes! You were severely injured and infected with Corpse Qi! If Zhengyang hadn't used his internal energy to expel the Corpse Poison from your body, you might have been in serious trouble!"
"Oh!" It took me a moment to process this information before asking foolishly, "But wasn't it just a fox spirit? How could I be affected by Corpse Poison?"
"Xia, do you remember which female ghost is in the Big Belly Deity Temple?"
"Oh!" I woke up with a splitting headache, feeling completely disoriented. It suddenly dawned on me—what was going on? I was completely in the dark. "What about that female ghost?"
"This kid! Must be so used to being single that even the Jealous Woman Ghost is on his mind!" Big Mouth Lee chuckled, teasing me from the side. If it weren't for him coming to Baisha Village, I wouldn't have encountered a series of strange events, and at that moment, I couldn't be bothered to respond to him!
"She has already been captured!" Lu Jianguo said calmly, but his tone was quite commanding.
After hearing this, a barrage of questions shot out of my mouth towards Lu Jianguo. For instance, what strategy he had discussed with Gao Lao, what exactly that female ghost was, and how she had been subdued. The only question I didn't ask was who Zhengyang was because at that time, I had no idea of this person's existence.
Lu Jianguo listened to my series of questions with great composure, as if he had been prepared for them. He pulled out three cigarettes, lit one for Gao Lao and Big Mouth Lee, and started smoking himself. It seemed like he was brewing his words in his mind; after smoking three or four cigarettes, he finally began to speak slowly.
"Xia, don't blame me! Uncle, there are reasons for this!" Lu Jianguo put down his cigarette and stood up before slowly explaining. After his explanation, I couldn't help but admire Lu Jianguo's meticulousness, though his true identity became increasingly unclear to me.
It turned out that this scheme was called "Inviting the Monarch into the Jar."
On the very day I first entered Baisha Village, Lu Jianguo had heard about the Spirit Offering. He felt something was off about it. Only evil gods would accept such cruel rituals. These kinds of deities were generally false representations of Monsters or Water Monsters and were certainly not righteous gods. According to the records in the Secret Technique, monsters could rapidly enhance their strength by consuming the abundant Spirit Yang of Youngsters through a Spirit Offering—essentially extorting bribes from villagers in exchange for peace.
Lu Jianguo had briefly disappeared several times in Baisha Village. He observed the terrain and landscape of Baisha Village; although the feng shui wasn't particularly bad, two Dragon Veins intersected suddenly at a mid-point in front and behind the village. Where these Dragon Veins converged created an opening—a cave we had previously fallen into—situated in a triangular plot known as a place of hidden danger. Fortunately, a spring flowed out from this opening, carrying away the ominous energy, so this place couldn't harbor too many monsters.
On May 13th, Lu Jianguo took Gao Lao to set up the Seven Star Soul Fixing Formation at Cave God’s cave using raw chicken bones this time for greater power. He aimed to lock down the earth energy to force the Jealous Woman Ghost to appear quickly; it would take about three days from setting up the formation until the Eerie Energy diminished.
After Gao Lao assisted Lu Jianguo in arranging the formation, he incited the Youngsters of Baisha Village and specifically arranged for them to wait in a wooden house for me to take the bait. Sure enough, on May 15th, I couldn't hold back any longer and was pushed into that wooden house. That’s when everything unfolded in the temple.
"Uncle Lu, why did you have all those Youngsters retreat from the Spirit Offering platform? By midnight, I was left all alone?"
"That was to throw her off!"
"What?" I couldn't understand at first and stared blankly at Lu Jianguo.
"The Jealous Woman Ghost has already been weakened by my Seven Star Soul Fixing Formation; her Corpse Ghost has also been Soul Shattered. To gather enough Spirit Yang to resist my Seven Star Soul Fixing Formation, she had no choice but to take matters into her own hands!"
"Oh! So gathering over twenty Youngsters was just to trick the Jealous Woman Ghost into thinking there was enough Spirit Yang available from multiple sources?"
"Exactly! The materials used for the Spirit Offering platform at Big Belly Deity Temple are quite special; they are paved with Pure Land Bricks."
The so-called Pure Land Brick is made by digging holes in the ground to extract soil from the ninth layer. From a geological perspective, this refers to the soil of the mother Stratum, which is the oldest and has been exposed for the shortest time, making it extremely pure. The bricks made from this soil require very high temperatures to be fired. As a result, their surfaces are smooth and have a metallic sheen. These bricks act like mirrors, reflecting the essence of Spirit Yang into the air. Spiritual entities can observe the Spirit Yang through this aerial reflection, as if they were experiencing it firsthand.
"Now I understand! But why am I the only one left?"
"You fool, do you really expect them to go to their deaths? Your Spirit Yang is far superior to theirs!" Big Mouth Lee said boldly, and I was too angry to even look at him.
"That's right! You're different from them. However, they weren't idle that night!"
"Did you anticipate that fox spirit as well?"
"No, I calculated everything but ended up forgetting about that creature!"
"Uh! This fox spirit is heinous; I heard she has devoured over eighty youngsters!"
Upon hearing this, Gao Lao burst into tears and slapped himself several times. "Alas! We were blinded by our own folly. Where in the world is there such a thing as a Cave God? We let the monster take advantage of us; I deserve this!"
"You deserve it! This fox spirit has been practicing Daoism for hundreds of years. However, considering your situation, she hasn't yet consumed any Spirit Offerings, so I'll spare you this time! Remember to engage more with the outside world to avoid being taken advantage of by monsters again!" Gao Lao nodded repeatedly and suggested dismantling the Big Belly Deity Temple. We hurriedly stopped him; this had nothing to do with Big Belly God.
"Alas! That fox spirit was my oversight! I never expected it to have such audacity!"
