Cackling! Cackling! Cackling! Cackling!
What on earth is that sound? I perked up my ears to listen closely. That laughter rang out again, and I finally pinpointed its source. It was the Fat Buddha!
In this godforsaken place, there was something so terrifying!
The laughter echoed once more, clear and piercing—something no human throat could produce.
I rubbed my eyes and stared intently at the Fat Buddha Statue. The one in the center actually moved, its mouth stretching back to its nape, emitting a strange laugh from within. The Big Belly God actually stood up, just like a person. It looked like a living, breathing fat man, with cheeks that seemed to be inflated like balloons.
"Damn it! This is just ridiculous! I'm about to be fed to a frog!" I rubbed my eyes again, and everything returned to normal; the laughter ceased, and the Big Belly God showed no signs of movement.
After a moment of silence, a crisp and pleasant voice came through.
"What a handsome brother you are! What are you thinking about here?"
"Motherf—!" My heart nearly leaped out of my chest. When I didn’t respond, the voice continued, "Brother, I got lost at night. Can you help me?" The voice had already reached behind me. I turned around to take a closer look—a girl around seventeen or eighteen years old, with a graceful figure and beautiful features, but her head was always lowered.
I sized her up; she didn’t look like a ghost and seemed somewhat familiar. I pondered in my mind; it felt strange—an odd sense of déjà vu. I thought to myself, "Don’t panic now; if I get flustered, I'll lose my Yang Qi, and then it’ll really be over!" So I feigned calmness and replied, "What can I help you with?"
The girl smiled and patted my shoulder softly, saying with a light laugh, "Brother! Can I sit next to you and chat?" I thought to myself, "Let’s see what you can talk about!" and nodded. Sure enough, she sat down beside me, giggling lightly. A peculiar fragrance wafted from her body; I couldn’t quite place what it smelled like.
Seeing that I wasn’t too frightened of her, she cozied up next to me. I noticed she wore tight-fitting clothes that accentuated her curves and red embroidered shoes. She took off her shoes, revealing feet as white as jade while giggling away. I stared blankly at the Red Embroidered Shoes; memories of the story “A Pair of Embroidered Shoes” flooded my mind! Cold sweat broke out all over me.
With a bright smile, she asked, "Brother! Why are you sitting alone in the temple?" Internally cursing under my breath, "How the hell would I know!" But I couldn’t show it on my face; instead, I casually replied with an "Oh!" She continued asking, "Brother! I'm feeling quite cold; can I lean on your shoulder?" Before I could respond, she leaned against me herself. Her hands and feet began to wander restlessly over me. Those hands were icy cold as if they had been pulled from an ice lake. Suddenly, those hands slipped under my clothing. A chill shot through me as I jumped up abruptly.
You think I don’t want to run? The door is locked; where am I supposed to go? Besides, it felt like something was pressing down on my entire body—I couldn’t stand at all. As for anything else, my hands were empty right now. The only things I could rely on—the Master Copper Seal and Meteorite Fragments—were at Gao Lao's place; there was no way I dared to move an inch.
"Look at me, I won't eat you!" I instinctively let out an "oh" and raised my head to look over. She lifted her head from where it had been buried. Her face was exquisite, with delicate features: finely arched eyebrows, large eyes, a high nose, and a mouth that was crystal clear. Even after years in the city, it was rare to see such a beautiful woman—she could easily be a model for cosmetic advertisements.
"Sister Lian?" I thought to myself, this is too unreal; it must be an illusion.
"Could that thing have transformed into Sister Lian to harm me?" A chill ran down my spine.
"Brother! Am I pretty? I've lost my way; can you take me home?" The girl spoke with a slightly choked voice, "Good brother, please!" An ominous premonition surged within me. "Could this be the Corpse Ghost?" According to the records in Mausoleum Secrets, when a person is frightened or experiences intense fear, the taste of their flesh turns sour. Therefore, before monsters eat humans, they either transform into beautiful women or handsome men to lure them in.
The thought sent shivers down my spine. What kind of creature lurked beneath this beautiful facade? Humanity is often filled with fear of the unknown. Knowing one's fate can be accepted calmly, but this kind of fear filled with uncertainty only brings unease and anxiety.
"Come on! Good brother, I'm begging you!" The girl made a soft, enticing sound. Although I was just an ordinary human, after experiencing a series of terrifying events, I found myself less afraid of such things. I casually replied, "Sure!" She clearly felt joy at my response, perhaps thinking the moment had come.
She clung tightly to me, one hand tracing my back. At that moment, I felt completely numb and unable to stand. Suddenly, a cold wind blew from behind me, chilling to the bone. I heard several cracking sounds, like the sound of a sword being drawn from its sheath. Several hard metal rods scraped against my back, tearing through my skin!
"Let go! If you dare touch me again, I'll make you feel Soul Shattering!" That voice was all too familiar—it was Lu Jianguo. He kicked open the temple door and rushed in. The Demon seemed startled and stood aside with an odd laugh as if it feared Lu Jianguo.
Without hesitation, Lu Jianguo grabbed my hand and ran forward. His grip on my arm felt like iron pincers; it hurt so much that I let out a yelp. After running for a short while, I heard long howls coming from the Big Belly Deity Temple followed by sounds of fighting—shouts from people and the beating of bronze drums—as if a fierce battle was taking place.
Lu Jianguo didn't loosen his grip as he dragged me up the back mountain along a narrow path for over ten minutes. I was nearly out of breath and felt like I might vomit bile before we finally stopped at the foot of a slope; his hand still held tight around mine. It took me half a moment to catch my breath.
I asked dazedly, "Uncle Lu, what was that thing?" Lu Jianguo had a lewd grin on his face as he chuckled, "Perhaps it was a runaway girl!" I asked again, "Why would a girl run away to a temple at this hour?" Lu Jianguo casually picked up half a blade of grass and stuck it in his mouth as he replied nonchalantly, "Maybe she's a loose woman!"
"Uncle Lu, where are you taking me in this back mountain?"
"Of course to a safe place!"
"Don't rush; let's rest for a bit! We're almost there; just trust me and follow!" Lu Jianguo continued explaining as he squatted down on the ground and took off his shoes to scratch his feet.
Something was off; this Lu Jianguo was very strange.
Uncle Lu always gave me a sense of stability and honesty. Although he dressed quite simply, he never had the air of a rogue. I was astonished; this was definitely not the Uncle Lu I knew. Hmph! Ghosts and monsters can mimic appearances and voices perfectly, but they cannot imitate personalities. Just a few probing questions would reveal their true nature. So I asked, "That girl is really beautiful, even more so than the Boss at the Rongcheng Courtesan Beauty Salon!"
"Yeah! She's really stunning, truly stunning!"
In that moment, I was certain that this was not the Uncle Lu I knew. I had never been to the Rongcheng Courtesan Beauty Salon with him, nor could I afford it. Whether Uncle Lu had been there or not, I couldn't say for sure. But one thing was certain: we had definitely never gone together.
"Damn! I might be in serious trouble!" Lu Jianguo gripped me tightly, and I had no strength to resist. It seemed like my life was on the line, and I still didn't understand what he truly was.
According to the Mausoleum Secrets, "Ghosts fear mirrors!" This meant that ghosts are afraid of their reflections; once they see themselves in a mirror, their true forms are revealed. I checked my pockets and felt a surge of relief! Despite running all this way, my phone hadn't fallen out—what a stroke of luck!
I pulled out my phone, intending to use its black screen to get a glimpse of Lu Jianguo. Just as I took it out, that thing burst into laughter.
Lu Jianguo turned around and laughed maniacally, "Do you want to see who I really am?" His terrifying laughter echoed around us. When I looked closely, I froze in shock. Wasn't that Fox Flower? The same Fox Immortal who had been injured by Bai Ze just days ago.
"What the hell!" Fated Encounter—what was even scarier was that I was completely unarmed; not even a Yellow Talisman in my possession. "Hey! I've got blood from my tongue; what do I have to fear?" I bit down hard on my tongue and sprayed blood toward the Fox Immortal. She pulled out a handkerchief and wiped her face, grinning wickedly. "What the hell is going on?" Later, I learned that living beings naturally weren't afraid of tongue blood, especially not a centuries-old Daoist Fox Immortal like her.
Fox Flower cackled as if savoring a delicious meal!
"The Spirit Yang Body is finally mine! Hahaha! I've consumed over eighty Spirit Offering Youngsters, but none are as valuable as you!"
"What does the Spirit Yang Body have to do with me?" I asked in confusion.
"You’re about to die; do you want to know what the Spirit Yang Body is?" Fox Flower stared at me intently, like a starving ghost eyeing food or a thief eyeing cash—her gaze made me uneasy.
"I don’t know! And I don’t want to know!"
"Since you asked so sincerely, I'll generously tell you!" Fox Flower completely ignored me and continued on her own.
I was speechless, utterly speechless.
Fox Immortal was just too self-absorbed!
Spirit Yang Body, which basically meant Three Generations of Bachelorhood. In my past three lives, I had either been a monk, a Taoist priest, or a Feng Shui Master with Five Deficiencies and Three Shortcomings. That was all behind me; I had already reached Two Realms Completion. In my previous life, I was a powerful Taoist who killed too many ghosts, resulting in insufficient virtue. Although this title wasn't particularly impressive, it sounded quite formidable, and I could reluctantly accept it.
However, this Three Generations of Bachelorhood was just too tragic. Who would want such a title? Damn you, Spirit Yang Body. I hadn't gained any benefits from this and was even being eyed by a Demon. Speaking of which, I was still single to this day. Hell no, I wouldn't want to end up as Four Generations of Bachelorhood in this lifetime!
"Spirit Yang Body, so what?"
"Dead Child, Spirit Yang Body is something others can't even beg for. You have a physique suited for cultivation; there's a Heroic Spirit within you. Ha! If I were to consume it, I could extend my Daoist Practice by thousands of years!"
Damn! Fox Immortal's explanation was just too outrageous! I felt like I was being messed with by some third-rate web novel. It was nauseating; how was that any different from the idea that you become what you eat? If I were to eat a pig's head, would I really turn into one? This was complete nonsense, but I didn't dare say it out loud.
"Well then, can you close your eyes now? If you get too worked up, you'll lose your Daoist Practice!" Fox Immortal wiped her mouth and seemed impatient.
Seeing the situation escalating, I hurriedly waved my hand and said, "Wait! I have something to say..."
