In order to support Liu An in his career, I had neglected my own appearance, and in the end, it became a reason for him to disdain me.
I gritted my teeth and said, "Divorce is fine, but you have to wait until I give birth to the child."
Liu An nodded with a sense of relief and quickly packed up his things.
"Well, I'm leaving. Take care of yourself."
I didn't want to look at him again; I turned away and sat on the sofa to watch television.
I watched for a long time—so long that when my phone rang, I suddenly realized I had been watching twenty minutes of commercials.
With a blank expression, I turned off the TV and got up to take down our wedding photo, feeling a mix of numbness and pain in my heart.
After dealing with the wedding photo, I sat alone on the sofa, my hands unconsciously resting on my belly, feeling the movements inside.
"Baby, from now on, you will only have your mother."
After years of struggling alongside Liu An in our careers, I was no longer that foolish girl who saw nothing but love.
I spent a day sorting out my emotions and then fully immersed myself in the two tasks at hand: divorce and preparing for childbirth.
I called my lawyer to expedite the handling of our assets and asked my mother to hire two caretakers for me.
Both caretakers were attentive and cheerful, taking care of me in every way possible, almost making me forget about the distressing situation with Liu An.
I thought everything was under my control; I would safely give birth to the baby and then take the assets to start anew, completely severing ties with those two despicable people.
But little did I know, I was still too naive.
During my pregnancy, Liu An came home once, claiming he was there to pick up some things.
I directly threw all of his belongings out and then changed the locks right in front of him.
Liu An looked at me with a pale face, sneered, and walked away.
Since that day, the baby that had been quiet inside me began to stir.
My stomach hurt every day, and one morning I exerted myself too much while getting up and ended up bleeding heavily.
The two nannies were terrified and hurriedly called for an ambulance.
After being taken to the hospital by the nannies, the doctor examined me and said I had come into contact with something that could induce a miscarriage, but fortunately, the fetus was strong.
To prove her innocence, one of the nannies searched the house thoroughly while video calling me and finally found a small medicine packet under the sofa cushions.
Upon inspection, it turned out to contain Musk!
Shit!
The nanny was hired by my mother to take care of me; she wouldn’t harm me.
That only left Liu An, who had come home once recently!
Even a tiger wouldn’t harm its cubs. Although all evidence pointed to Liu An, I still had my doubts.
I calmed down and called Liu An, tentatively mentioning my bleeding.
Through the phone, I could hear his excited voice: "How can you not take care of yourself when I'm not around? Just wait; I'll be there right now!"
I hung up the phone, a hint of mockery curling at the corners of my mouth.
His eagerness made it seem as if it wasn't his child that was almost lost.
Liu An quickly arrived at the hospital and immediately asked, "Lulu, where's the embryo you lost? Let me see it."
"This is my first child after all; I want to bury it myself!"
I lifted the blanket, revealing my round belly.
"Fortunately, our child is strong and hasn't been lost."
Liu An's smile froze on his face, and after a moment of awkwardness, he said, "That's good to hear."
After being married for a few years, I could read Liu An's every expression and guess his changing thoughts.
He looked a bit disappointed!
I took the apple handed to me by the assistant. "Liu An, are you so happy that you can't even smile?"
"Why are you being sarcastic? I'm just worried about you!"
Liu An questioned me with a look of complaint. When I ignored him, he stiffly pulled at the corners of his mouth and turned to grab the doctor's arm.
"Doctor, what exactly happened this time?"
The doctor repeated what he had told me to Liu An.
Liu An turned back to me, looking concerned.
"Lulu, the doctor said that this heavy bleeding could likely affect the development of the fetus, and it might be born with disabilities. Otherwise..."
Liu An took a deep breath.
"Otherwise, you should just terminate the pregnancy!"
I suddenly looked up, my eyes wide as I stared at Liu An.
Seeing the man I had foolishly loved for many years, I wished I could go back in time and slap myself twice.
Liu An had a self-righteous expression on his face. "I'm doing this for your own good. Anyway, we're getting divorced. You'll be a single mother with a disabled child; life won't be easy for you."
I ground my teeth, the sound echoing in my ears, and picked up the cup beside me, smashing it directly into Liu An's face.
"Get out! Don't ever show up in front of me again and disgust me!"
Liu An barely managed to dodge, but I hit him squarely, leaving a bruise on his forehead.
He looked at me in disbelief, cursed me as a shrew, and turned to leave with his bag.
Once Liu An's figure completely disappeared from sight, I patted my assistant's shoulder, giving her a look that said "Well done."
While Liu An and I were arguing, my assistant had slipped a button into his bag.
It looked like a button, but it was actually a pinhole recorder.
I wanted to see what Liu An was really up to, to be so cruel as to plot against our unborn child.
