A night passed, and Ye Xiu struggled to open his eyes, feeling sore all over and his limbs numb.
"Maybe it's because of sleeping on this hard wooden board," Ye Xiu thought to himself without dwelling on it too much.
On the first day back to work, he felt that his condition wasn't quite right.
When Ye Xiu arrived at the Security Room, the early-rising Bearded Man was yawning rudely. He then began to explain the important points regarding work that Ye Xiu needed to pay attention to.
The morning quickly flew by, and in the afternoon, Ye Xiu took a break.
With nothing else to do, Ye Xiu decided to wander around the school in areas he hadn't explored before.
Slowly, he began to feel like a student of this school, losing himself in the moment.
Ye Xiu walked to a lakeside where there were not many students. A path led straight to the center of the lake, where there was a pavilion. The pavilion had an ancient plaque hanging from it with three characters inscribed: "Ancient Heart Pavilion."
Ming Zhong University truly lived up to its reputation as a top-tier university; even the name of a pavilion was so profound.
As Ye Xiu approached the Ancient Heart Pavilion, a chilling voice suddenly came from behind him.
"Hello, classmate."
Ye Xiu jumped in surprise and turned to see a tall, thin student. His face was pale, and he wore a forced smile as if trying to convey goodwill, hoping to appear friendly. However, that strained smile looked particularly eerie on such a ghostly face.
"Y-you... hello..." Ye Xiu stammered while leaning against a pillar for support.
"Classmate, I noticed your aura seems dark; have you encountered something unclean?" the Pale-Faced student asked in a hoarse and sinister tone.
"..." Just hearing that voice sent chills down Ye Xiu's spine. He was about to respond when he suddenly fell silent in shock, pointing frantically behind the Pale-Faced student.
The Pale-Faced student turned around and glanced back. "There's nothing there. What did you see?"
Behind Ye Xiu stood a living ghost! This ghost looked ordinary, just as described online, merely a soul in a state after death. Its visible skin was deathly pale. At that moment, the ghost was drawing something from Pale-Faced.
"Do you... really not see anything? Behind you... behind you there's..." Ye Xiu prepared to bolt once again.
"Oh, you!" Pale-Faced exclaimed, as if suddenly enlightened. "This ghost behind me is one I raised. I thought it looked pitiful, so I took it in."
What the hell, is this a joke?
"Don't be afraid, classmate. This is just a wandering spirit. As long as you guide it well, it can become a benevolent spirit and even a helpful ally," Pale-Faced said proudly.
"..." Ye Xiu pondered for a moment.
He had encountered enough supernatural phenomena by now and had many questions. Although this classmate seemed somewhat terrifying, he didn’t appear to pose any harm. So why not ask?
"Classmate? What do you go by?" Ye Xiu tentatively inquired.
"Um. I'm Jiang Baixuan," Jiang Baixuan replied with pride. "My family comes from a lineage of ghost-raisers and has quite a bit of influence in Starlit City. But enough about that—tell me, have you encountered something unclean?"
"Yes, I don't know why, but lately I've felt like something has been lurking around me, and I've even seen some... like that thing next to you..." Ye Xiu weakly pointed at the ghost beside Jiang Baixuan.
"Classmate, it seems you've developed spiritual energy. Spiritual energy comes from the Spiritual Source, and when the Spiritual Source suddenly activates, it often attracts Demons. Demons can become stronger by absorbing the Spiritual Source, but we still don't know why it activated suddenly," Jiang Baixuan mused.
"..." After careful consideration, Ye Xiu exclaimed excitedly, "So I can also possess powerful supernatural abilities! How about you take me on as your apprentice and teach me?"
"Let's skip the master-apprentice thing; we look about the same age. However, I happen to have this Cultivation Manual that I'll give you. This should at least help you get through your current troubles. No need to thank me; it's quite common."
"Thank you!" Ye Xiu gratefully accepted the manual.
"...No need to thank me," Jiang Baixuan said, shaking his skeletal-like hand.
"By the way, classmate, I haven't asked for your name yet?"
"My name is Ye Xiu, with 'Ye' as in leaf, and 'Xiu'..." Ye Xiu said seriously.
"Okay, got it."
Ye Xiu couldn't help but sigh. Such a nice name, why was it that people always interrupted his introduction?
"Jiang, since we still have time, why don't you tell me more about these matters regarding Dao methods?" Ye Xiu said with an eager expression.
"Sure. There are many types of Dao methods, generally divided into Mind Methods, cultivation techniques, and talismans. Talismans are simple; they involve drawing different spells or formations using spiritual energy. Cultivation techniques allow one to manifest various physical techniques through their own spiritual energy. For example, one could use spiritual energy to evolve into a tiger or summon lightning, but those are advanced techniques. Mind Methods are about training one's spiritual energy; a person can only accept one Mind Method in their lifetime," Jiang Baixuan explained enthusiastically, seeming to enjoy the role of a teacher.
"The manual I just gave you isn't a Mind Method, nor is it a cultivation technique or a talisman. It's more like a guide to entering the Dao realm, suitable for beginners like you because it only teaches you how to absorb Spiritual Energy."
"Well, having something is better than nothing," Ye Xiu thought with a hint of disappointment.
"By the way, I have something else to attend to. See you next time, Ye," Jiang Baixuan waved at Ye Xiu and left.
"Um, see you..." Ye Xiu intended to say farewell, but Jiang Baixuan had already disappeared.
How amazing! When will I be able to cultivate to the point of vanishing like that?
Ye Xiu flipped through the manual in his hands, studying it carefully.
Entering the realm of cultivation was quite simple; it involved finding a place rich in Spiritual Energy during the hour of Chen and meditating there. One would guide external Spiritual Energy into their body using their own spiritual power. However, utilizing one's own spiritual power was relatively difficult.
The manual stated that one should sit down and introspect to sense their own Spiritual Source before being able to use spiritual power.
Ye Xiu was already impatient; the new world was right before him—how could he stop here?
Ye Xiu glanced at his phone; it was only three o'clock, and he still had four hours until his shift in the evening.
He decided to find a place to train. Lake Island was too conspicuous, so he opted to return to his dormitory instead, where at least there wouldn't be anyone at this hour.
Ye Xiu hurried back to his dorm, sat down on his bed, closed his eyes, and began to focus inwardly, trying to sense his surroundings.
...
He lost track of time and was jolted awake by the sound of a ringing phone.
"Hello?..." Ye Xiu said lazily.
"Hey! Are you planning to be late for your first shift? Do you even care about this job? The captain is blaming me for not reminding you!" the Bearded Man shouted through the phone.
"I'm sorry, I'm sorry! I'll be there right away." Ye Xiu couldn't help but sigh; the Bearded Man was so straightforward, showing no restraint in expressing his feelings.
What happened to the good training? How did he end up falling asleep!
