“Jiang Ling, stop bragging in front of me. Who would buy something that’s already been used for a ritual at such a high price?” He Ying shot me a skeptical glance, clearly not believing my words.
“Well, if you don’t believe me, that’s fine,” I replied awkwardly, glancing at the talismans I had left. There were still thirty-five unsold.
At that moment, the director approached with a few staff members. He smiled at us and asked, “Hey friends, do you still have any talismans left? We were busy packing up earlier and didn’t have time to come buy some. If not, we can come back tomorrow.”
I checked the types of talismans in my hand and said, “I still have thirty-five talismans left. Among them, twenty are Exorcism Talismans, and there are five Calming Talismans and five more Exorcism Talismans. How much do you want to buy?”
“Brother, I’ll take all those talismans. Here’s three thousand five; count it,” the director said as he pulled out a stack of red bills. He Ying didn’t even bother counting and just took the money. I handed over all the remaining talismans to the director.
As my hand brushed against him, I felt an unusual chill emanating from his body that sent goosebumps up my arm. Frowning, I looked into his eyes and said solemnly, “Director, my name is Jiang Ling; I’m a Taoist Master. May I ask your name?”
“Brother Jiang Ling, my name is Zhao Sanbao; my friends call me Director Zhao. Here’s my business card.” Zhao Sanbao handed me a card with his name on it. I took it and glanced at it before putting it in my pocket.
I scrutinized Zhao Sanbao but found nothing particularly special about him. I touched my ear thoughtfully and said seriously, “Director Zhao, have you encountered a dead person recently? And did you offend that person’s soul? If you believe me, you should stick those talismans all over yourself because that soul will definitely come looking for revenge tonight. I hope you can survive.”
I was so certain because of the icy chill from Zhao Sanbao’s body; it indicated he had definitely been entangled with a soul. However, I didn’t sense any lingering eerie aura from him, which meant that soul had only recently died. Tonight the Ghost Gate would close, and those souls unwilling to return to the Underworld would surely roam around causing trouble. That would be the perfect opportunity for that soul to strike.
Upon hearing my words, Zhao Sanbao trembled slightly, an unusual light flashing in his eyes before he quickly masked it with a smile. “Brother Jiang Ling, you’re joking! I’ve been busy preparing for this event; when would I have time to see dead people?”
“Even better if you haven’t; maybe I just misread the situation,” I nodded and turned to walk back toward the shop with He Ying. It was getting darker by the minute, and since I had just arrived here, I hadn’t found a place to stay yet. The most pressing issue now was to sort out accommodation.
As we walked, He Ying counted out a stack of red bills from her wallet and handed them to me. “Jiang Ling, here’s the six thousand you gave me today; keep it safe.”
I took the money from He Ying's hand and placed it in the backpack behind me. After a moment of thought, I spoke up, "He Ying, do you have any empty rooms at your place? I have nowhere to stay, so I could crash at yours for a bit. I can sleep in the living room if needed. Don't worry, I'm definitely a good person."
With that, I patted my chest firmly, putting on an innocent expression. In truth, I had initially planned to find a hotel, but Liu Zhenxian inside the Soul Nourishing Stone wanted to be close to He Ying, which is why I asked her this.
He Ying looked at me and let out a few cold laughs. She moved her hands slightly and said nonchalantly, "Jiang Ling, since you helped me a lot today, I'll allow you to stay at my place. However, I need to warn you in advance: I've been practicing Daoist Sect martial arts with my mother since I was young and have also learned some karate and taekwondo. If you dare to have any funny ideas about me, be prepared to get beaten into an idiot."
Seeing He Ying's expression made me feel uneasy; I regretted what I had just said.
He Ying and I hailed a taxi by the roadside, and after about ten minutes, we arrived at her place. It was a two-bedroom apartment—not very large, but it had all the necessary furniture and looked quite cozy.
He Ying blushed as she tidied up some pink underwear scattered around the room. She then pointed to the room on the left and said, "Jiang Ling, you can stay in that room. Everything you need is inside; you can take a shower and go to bed afterward."
I nodded and walked into the bedroom with my backpack. I closed the door behind me and took out the Soul Nourishing Stone, summoning a wisp of Liu Zhenxian's soul from within. I asked him quietly, "Liu Zhenxian, this He Ying should be your daughter, right? When are you planning to reveal yourself to her?"
Liu Zhenxian's eyes were filled with complex emotions as he shook his head and sighed. "I owe it to Xia; I owe it to He Ying. I can't face her. If I hadn't gone to the Ghost Realm back then or practiced that dark magic, I wouldn't have ended up like this. I don't know what to do now, Jiang Ling. Let me think it over first before we talk again."
With that, Liu Zhenxian's soul flickered and disappeared back into the Soul Nourishing Stone. I shook my head in frustration and put the stone away again.
After taking a shower and changing into clean clothes, I chatted with He Ying for a bit before returning to the bedroom and falling asleep on the bed.
Meanwhile, Zhao Sanbao directed his staff to tidy up their tools before heading home at eight in the evening.
Zhao Sanbao's wife and children were back in their hometown; he rented a single apartment by himself. The place was well-equipped but showed little sign of life, making it feel quite desolate.
Zhao Sanbao turned on the light in the room and took a bottle of beer from the refrigerator. He sat down on the chair in the living room, muttering to himself, "That mage named Jiang Ling, how much does he really know? Could it be that woman has turned into a ghost and is coming back to kill me?"
A sense of fear crept into Zhao Sanbao's heart. The night before, he had encountered a woman being robbed. By the time he rushed over, the robber had already fled, leaving the woman with a stab wound in her abdomen, blood pooling around her.
Zhao Sanbao had never seen a dead person before; he was so frightened that he turned and ran without even calling an ambulance for her. It wasn't until the next morning that he learned the woman had died from excessive blood loss, and the robber had yet to be caught.
