At that moment, a chilling wind swept across the open space, causing all the lighting fixtures to explode. The scene instantly plunged into darkness. Although the cameras were still broadcasting live, the lack of light rendered the images blurry, making it difficult to discern anything clearly.
"Ah! What happened?"
"Damn, could this be something that the event organizers arranged in advance? This is incredible!"
"Exactly, it looks terrifying and creates such an atmosphere!"
The crowd gathered nearby wore excited smiles, many already pulling out their phones to capture footage of the event site.
He Ying had been managing the shop's business alongside her mother. Although she didn't practice Taoist magic, she had heard many supernatural stories. Upon witnessing the events at the event site, her first thought was that there were ghosts at play.
He Ying's expression grew tense as she took out an Exorcism Talisman from her pocket and clutched it tightly in her hand. She nudged my arm and asked nervously, "Jiang Ling, aren't you a Taoist Master? Have you seen anything strange?"
I smiled and patted He Ying's shoulder reassuringly. "Don't be afraid; as long as I'm here, you'll be fine. Besides, those are just a bunch of souls without cultivation. They might scare ordinary people, but with all those talismans you have, they won't dare come near you."
Upon hearing my words, He Ying nodded, feeling somewhat reassured. However, just to be safe, she pulled out three or four more Exorcism Talismans and stuck them onto herself.
I shook my head in exasperation and turned to glance at the event site. I noticed that it had already been surrounded by those souls. Meanwhile, those who hadn't managed to grab any incense sticks began to cause a ruckus.
Originally, the souls had been resting under the Sophora Tree. They were drawn over by the scent of incense. Four sticks had been lit at the foot of the table, but due to Wu Jie having talismans on him, those souls dared not consume the incense near his feet and instead drained the other three sticks dry.
Even though staff members lit another stick afterward, with so many spirits and so little incense, some souls still went without. Frustrated, they grabbed plates from the table and smashed them onto the ground while eerily shouting, "Give me incense! Hurry up and give me incense!"
The voices of those souls echoed around the area, reverberating through the crowd outside who could hear them clearly. Yet aside from me, no one else could see their figures, which suddenly made the surroundings eerily quiet.
Some people had previously suspected that this was all part of a pre-arranged plan by the event organizers, but at this moment, they had completely changed their minds. They heard the ghostly wails, now distant and then close again, sounding particularly ethereal, unlike anything that could be produced by speakers.
"Give me incense! Hurry! Incense!" A Soul was perched on Tian Long's head, reaching down to incessantly tug at his ears and hair.
"Ah! Tian Long, why is your hair moving? Is there a ghost behind you?" The two female hosts pointed at Tian Long's head, their faces pale with fear.
Upon hearing their words, Tian Long's face turned ashen, and he began to tremble slightly. Just a moment ago, he felt a heaviness on his head as if something were lying on it. He also sensed a chilling touch on his ears, as if a cold hand were caressing them.
Under normal circumstances, Tian Long might have brushed off such sensations, but the eerie atmosphere heightened his sensitivity. He couldn't shake the feeling that a Ghostly Being was crawling on top of his head.
"Big brother, let's talk calmly. You want incense, right? I'll light one for you right away!" Cold sweat dripped from Tian Long's forehead as he bent down to pick up the incense from the ground. He took out a lighter from his pocket and quickly lit one of the sticks.
"Why is this flame green? Don't scare me!" Tian Long noticed that the flame from the lighter flickered with an unusual green hue, looking distinctly abnormal. After lighting the incense, he immediately tossed the lighter aside.
"Whoosh... whoosh... sizzle..."
Tian Long heard a faint inhaling sound in front of him while watching the incense vanish at an alarming rate. Within just a few seconds, it completely disappeared from his hand.
"Burp! That was delicious, thank you!" The Soul above Tian Long let out a satisfied burp. It patted Tian Long's head before swaying and flying off from atop him.
"Whoa! Take care now," Tian Long felt a lightness on his head and realized that the Soul had left. He let out a long sigh of relief.
Meanwhile, the director watching from below noticed what was happening on stage and his expression darkened. He felt as if a Soul were resting on his own head, incessantly scratching at his neck. It felt itchy, but he dared not reach up to scratch it.
"Incense! Incense! I want to eat incense! Hurry up and give me incense!" The Soul screamed in the director's ear, loud enough for those around him to hear. They instinctively stepped back, fearfully turning to look at the director.
"Okay, okay, I'll get you some incense right away." The director swallowed nervously, glancing at the staff beside him. He shouted, "What are you all standing there for? Hurry up and bring out all the incense, light them all!"
"Yes, Director." The staff scrambled away in a flurry, quickly searching through the storage boxes for the incense. They had previously worried about having enough props and had bought a whole box of incense since it was inexpensive. Little did they know it would come in handy now.
The staff found the box of incense and each grabbed a bundle, quickly lighting them.
After a while, a faint wisp of blue smoke filled the entire venue, and the ghostly wails quieted down. Only the sound of subtle breathing could be heard in the open space.
"Pop~~ Crackle~~ Pop~~ Crackle~~"
After about seven or eight minutes, the entire box of incense was burned for the group of Soul. All the Soul were satisfied and full. Most of them rubbed their bellies, let out a satisfied burp, and turned to leave the Event Site, heading back under the Sophora Tree.
However, three or four shifty-eyed Soul remained at the Event Site, their eyes gleaming with a mischievous green light as they gazed at the two female hosts on site.
