They reached the end of the passage and were met with a massive pit, roughly the size of half a football field, filled with countless corpses—at least two or three thousand of them.
The three mercenaries rushed over after spotting Dillingchar, reporting, "Mr. Dillingchar, we circled the pit and found a bronze door on the opposite side. There are stone chambers on both sides of the pit!"
"Excellent! This must be the entrance to the tomb, and the Nine-Dragon Cauldron is surely hidden behind that bronze door!" Dillingchar's face lit up with excitement. He turned to Wu Jingye and asked, "Mr. Wu, I plan to explore those two stone chambers first before heading to the bronze door. What do you think?"
Although Dillingchar was seeking Wu Jingye's input, his tone was casual, showing little regard for Wu Jingye and his companions. Since entering the tomb, Wu Jingye and his group had not made any moves, which explained Dillingchar's disdain.
"Dillingchar, you can arrange things as you see fit; we are only responsible for your safety!" Wu Jingye replied coolly, meeting Dillingchar's gaze. He recognized Dillingchar's arrogance but had no time to dwell on it; the corpse pit was his primary concern.
"A bunch of fools! You still have time to explore the stone chambers? If the corpses in that pit awaken, you'll be waiting for death!" Wu Jingye thought to himself. He sensed that at least half of the bodies in the pit had already turned into corpses. They were still dormant for now, but once they caught a whiff of Yang Qi in the air, they would awaken.
When that happened, Dillingchar and his group would be hunted down by the corpses, but these mere corpses posed no threat to Wu Jingye and his companions; thus, he chose not to leave.
"With so many corpses here, there must be corpse spirits! We can make good use of them! If we can lure these spirits to deal with those mercenaries, we might have a chance to escape! The timing isn't right yet!" Liu Yunchong's eyes gleamed with malice as he exchanged glances with his companions, each understanding what the other was thinking.
"What are you grave robbers staring at? Get up front and scout ahead! Are you looking for death?" Dillingchar kicked Liu Yunchong hard, sending him sprawling to the ground. Liu Yunchong got back up, his face dark with anger as he gritted his teeth and thought, Dillingchar, don't fall into my hands; otherwise, you'll die a miserable death!
Liu Yunchong led the way as they walked along the edge of the pit for about two minutes until they came upon a stone chamber.
The entrance was blocked by a heavy stone door. Liu Yunchong took out a spade and began striking it forcefully. Based on the varying sounds produced, he quickly identified four weak points.
"Get that guy! Blow open the stone door!" Liu Yunchong stepped aside to direct others as several people pulled out four fist-sized bundles of black powder and placed them on the four points Liu Yunchong had just identified.
The stone door was massive; it was inevitable that some areas would bear uneven pressure. Under external force, these weak spots would become vulnerable. By targeting those areas for detonation, they could shatter the door.
Dillingchar coldly watched as Liu Yunchong and his group took out Black Powder. He did not speak to stop them but instead stepped back with his men, retreating a dozen paces to a safe distance before he spoke in English, "Aim at this group of Grave Robbers. If they try anything funny, shoot them down!"
"Yes, Mr. Dilling!" the Mercenaries raised their Submachine Guns, aiming at Liu Yunchong and his companions.
"Damn it, these foreigners think they're so tough just because they have guns! I'll make them pay for this!" Liu Yunchong clenched his fists and cursed. Once the gunpowder was set up, they moved far away and ignited the fuse.
"Boom!" A loud explosion echoed from the graveyard, causing the ground to tremble slightly. The stone door was blown to pieces, debris flying everywhere. Fortunately, Liu Yunchong and his group had retreated far enough to avoid being hit by the shrapnel.
Black Powder produced thick black smoke that was pungent but dissipated quickly.
"Captain Mike, take ten men and escort this group of Grave Robbers to blow open another stone chamber! I’ll search for treasures inside and meet up with you later!" Dillingchar's face revealed a greedy glint. Although he had come for the Nine-Dragon Cauldron, that didn’t stop him from stealing a few more treasures.
With that, Dillingchar hurried into the stone chamber while Captain Mike led ten Mercenaries, escorting Liu Yunchong toward another stone chamber.
"Mr. Wu, things don't look good! That noise seems to have awakened those Corpses!" one of the Yin-Yang Masters beside Wu Jingye said. Wu Jingye looked down at the Corpse Pit and noticed the bodies beginning to stir slightly. The Corpse Qi above the pit also became agitated.
Wu Jingye furrowed his brow, a serious expression flashing in his eyes before quickly returning to normal. He calmly said, "These Corpses are not a threat to us yet. Let's wait until Dillingchar decides to give up before we go out! Otherwise, it won't be easy to explain to our superiors."
"Understood, Mr. Wu!" the Yin-Yang Masters replied in unison as they followed Wu Jingye into the stone chamber.
The space inside the stone chamber was limited, only about the size of a standard dormitory room. In the center stood a stone coffin surrounded by various Funerary Objects. Perhaps due to age, these objects had become dilapidated and were worthless.
Dillingchar held a porcelain bowl in his hand; its style appeared ancient and was indeed a rare antique. However, a large piece had broken off, rendering it incomplete and worthless.
Dillingchar forcefully smashed the porcelain bowl in his hand onto the ground and exclaimed, "Open this coffin for me! There must be something good inside!"
"Yes, Mr. Dilling!" the mercenaries responded in unison, positioning themselves on one side of the stone coffin and pushing hard against its lid.
The lid of the coffin was heavy and tightly sealed. The group of mercenaries exerted all their strength, and after a minute or two of effort, they finally managed to push it open.
Inside the coffin lay the corpse of a woman. The moment the lid was removed, the body appeared remarkably fresh. However, within just a few seconds, it began to visibly decay at an alarming rate, quickly transforming into a withered skeleton, while a foul pool of putrid liquid formed at the bottom of the coffin.
"It's just a body oxidizing upon exposure to air; there's nothing supernatural about it!" Dillingchar's eyes were solely focused on the treasures within the coffin, completely disregarding the changes happening to the female corpse. He reached in with his hands, unconcerned about getting them stained with the foul liquid.
Before long, Dillingchar's hands brushed against three pieces of ancient jade. A greedy expression spread across his face as he turned to the mercenaries behind him and said, "This corpse is too much of a nuisance; get her out of here!"
"Understood, Mr. Dilling!" The mercenaries responded eagerly. They grabbed hold of the woman's body and together lifted it out, carelessly tossing it onto the stone floor of the chamber.
Having been in the coffin for so long, the corpse was already in a state of decay. Now that it was thrown to the ground, it immediately fell apart.
Suddenly, a chilling wind swept through the chamber, accompanied by the sound of a child's cries emanating from within the coffin. The eerie sound sent shivers down their spines.
