I was startled by the person who suddenly appeared behind me, my neck stiffening and my body trembling slightly. I stammered, "Who are you?"
"Who am I? That's an interesting question. Let me think about it," the person said as he removed his hand from my shoulder and leaned closer to whisper in my ear. "There was a madwoman who called me 'Master.' She failed in her tasks and ended up being devoured by the insects I raised. I also had a beautiful evil spirit who always called me 'Master,' but just now, someone killed my beloved spirit, which made me very angry!"
As I listened to him, my hands and feet turned cold, and my heart felt like it was lodged in my throat, a sense of foreboding creeping in. I secretly tightened my grip on the Peach Wood Sword, preparing for the worst.
His tone became sinister as he traced a few lines on my back with his fingers. "By the way, I'm also someone who intends to ruin you."
As soon as he finished speaking, his fingers plunged into my back with force, sending a bone-chilling coldness coursing through me. I couldn't help but shudder.
"Get away from me!" Realizing the situation was dire, I swung the Peach Wood Sword behind me with all my might. The sword struck him like hitting a solid rock. My hands went numb from the impact, and the Peach Wood Sword slipped from my grasp and fell to the ground.
"Haha, I love prey that fights back!" he cackled, his voice sending chills down my spine. His hands dug deeper into my back, and I felt all my magical energy freeze under the cold. My head spun dizzily, and I collapsed to the ground, unconscious.
At that moment, he suddenly darted away from behind me. A red light descended and struck the spot where he had just stood, creating a deep pit in the ground that emitted green smoke.
The man glanced at the ground, his expression darkening. He turned to Wu Jingye and the others and said coldly, "You people from the Yin-Yang Association are truly insidious to launch a sneak attack on me! But is it too late for you to strike now?"
Wu Jingye snorted disdainfully. "None of you from the Ten Thousand Evil Hall are good people; how dare you call us insidious? This trap you've set must have been orchestrated by you! What exactly are your intentions?"
The man gave Wu Jingye a meaningful look before glancing at me lying on the ground. He then said slowly, "I just wanted to confirm a few things. Now that I've confirmed them, it's time for me to leave!"
With that, he moved swiftly and vanished into the darkness. Throughout it all, his true appearance remained hidden beneath his clothing; no one had seen his face clearly.
After that person left, someone asked, "Mr. Wu, who was that?"
Wu Jingye looked in the direction where the person had disappeared, his expression turning bewildered. He shook his head and said, "I’m not sure either. However, this person's skills are quite high. I previously tracked the Blood-Sucking Worms he raised but couldn't uncover his identity. What I can confirm is that he is from the Ten Thousand Evil Hall."
Once Wu Jingye finished speaking, he turned his gaze to me. He approached and examined me cautiously, his expression growing increasingly grim. After a while, he stopped what he was doing, his face darkening frighteningly. He spoke in a cold tone, "I didn't expect that person to be so ruthless, freezing all of Jiang Ling's magical power. Now Jiang Ling has become useless; it seems my plans will need to be adjusted!"
At that moment, someone urged, "Mr. Wu, let those half-baked individuals handle the aftermath. The association wants us to return as soon as possible; we should set off early!"
Wu Jingye nodded and left with the others, quickly disappearing into the darkness. After more than two hours, a shadow rushed to my side—it was the Three-Eyed Ghost Beast.
"Woof Woof!" The Three-Eyed Ghost Beast barked at me twice. Seeing I didn’t respond, it dove into the seal on my chest. The Round Seal on my chest reappeared, its originally black surface now covered in a layer of white frost. The Three-Eyed Ghost Beast transformed back into a Leech and began slowly sucking away the frost from the seal. However, the speed of absorption was very slow; it would take a long time to completely clear it away. After a while, the seal on my chest vanished again, returning everything to normal.
If Wu Jingye had seen this scene, he certainly wouldn’t have so decisively given up on me because it indicated I still had a chance to recover my magical power.
More than an hour later, Li Hanling and his team finished dealing with the Water Corpses in the reservoir and were preparing to report back to Wu Jingye. They searched around but didn’t see Wu Jingye’s figure; instead, they found me lying on the ground. They gathered together, and someone asked Li Hanling, "Captain, Master Wu must have already left. What should we do now?"
Li Hanling looked at me with a furrowed brow. He wasn’t surprised that Wu Jingye had left early; the current dilemma was how to handle me. Stroking his chin and thinking for a moment, a glint flashed in his eyes as he pointed at me and said, "Let’s take him back with us; this guy knows some magic that might come in handy! Once he’s done with whatever he needs to do, we’ll send him back!"
The people around Li Hanling smiled upon hearing his words; some even remarked, "The captain is smart! It would have been difficult to ask Master Wu for help with that matter. Who would have thought we’d have an unexpected gain now? We’re really lucky!"
"Enough chatter; let’s move!" Li Hanling commanded everyone to make a makeshift stretcher and lifted me as they headed out of the village while I remained completely unaware of it all.
In the morning light, I opened my eyes and felt a bit dizzy. Struggling to sit up in bed, I tried hard to recall what had happened yesterday. All my memories halted at the moment I was ambushed; I had no recollection of what occurred afterward.
"Where is this?" I surveyed the surroundings of the room and realized it was a completely unfamiliar place. It was a narrow room with transparent windows, a heavy iron door, white walls, white sheets, a white blanket, and a white-striped Patient Gown.
"What is going on here?!" A strong sense of unease washed over me when I noticed the Patient Gown I was wearing. I carefully examined the gown and found a name tag sewn onto the chest area that read: Mental Patient No. 058.
Seeing that name tag left me speechless, my mind going blank as I struggled to comprehend what had happened.
In the hospital's monitoring room, Li Hanling and the hospital director were seated, watching the surveillance footage of Jiang Ling, both harboring their own thoughts.
The director, named Wang Xinyu, was a balding middle-aged man in his forties or fifties with a potbelly. He wore a white lab coat and black-rimmed glasses, giving him an especially sleazy appearance. Adjusting his glasses, Wang Xinyu turned to Li Hanling and asked anxiously, "Captain Li, can this young man really do it? I've hired several people skilled in Daoist methods before, but they couldn't solve the problem, and things went wrong. If there are any issues this time, I won't take responsibility!"
Li Hanling nodded confidently and replied, "Director Wang, you can rest assured. This time we've brought in someone extraordinary; just watch closely."
