I quietly watched Jiang Bao's back, unsure of what to say as the atmosphere grew eerily silent.
" Brother Jiang Ling, I'm sorry!" Jiang Bao suddenly spoke, his voice trembling. I could tell that his heart must be filled with bitterness.
" Brother Jiang Ling, I'm leaving! I'm sorry! The matters in the village will be left to you!" Jiang Bao seemed to have made up his mind as he turned around and looked straight into my eyes.
I gazed at Jiang Bao with a complex expression. When I noticed the Round Seal on his chest and recalled how he had previously wielded the Seven Star Mysterious Dragon Sword with such skill, I began to piece together some things.
I sighed and said, "Jiang Bao, aren't you going to prepare anything?"
Jiang Bao hesitated for a moment before shaking his head. " Brother Jiang Ling, you haven't been back for too long. The Ghost Street has changed; it is no longer the Ghost Street of the past."
" Brother Jiang Ling, you still have a chance to escape from Ghost Street. Let me bear the rest alone!" Jiang Bao stepped closer to me, reaching for the jade pendant around my neck and yanking it away forcefully.
Tears welled up in my eyes as I listened to Jiang Bao's words. I didn't stop him; I simply stood there quietly, allowing him to take what was mine.
"I'm leaving now, Brother Jiang Ling!" Jiang Bao turned around and began carving a spell on the ground with the Seven Star Mysterious Dragon Sword. Soon, he opened a hidden passage leading to Spirit Ghost Street. Without pausing, he stepped inside.
As I watched Jiang Bao's retreating figure, tears streamed down my face uncontrollably. I cried out loudly, "Jiang Bao, tell me—was this Master's intention? Did he tell you to do this? Answer me!"
Jiang Bao paused for a moment but did not turn around. He simply nodded and said, "Just consider it Master's instruction!"
With that, Jiang Bao stepped into Spirit Ghost Street, and the passage before me vanished as if it had never existed.
I stared intently at the spot where Jiang Bao had disappeared. Wiping away my tears, I clenched my fists tightly and vowed, "I will return! I refuse to believe Master would treat me this way! I need to know the whole truth!"
Calming my emotions, I decided to handle the matters in the village first before figuring out what was happening in Ghost Street.
I took a flashlight and rope and walked over to the old well. Shining the flashlight down into the well, I realized it was too deep for the light to reach the bottom.
"I guess I should go down and take a look." I tied the rope to a nearby tree, put the flashlight in my mouth, and slowly descended into the well.
The well wasn't particularly deep—only about six or seven meters—and I quickly reached the bottom.
"That's strange! Just now when I threw a stone down, I clearly heard water below, but why is it dry here now?" I crouched down and shone my flashlight around, confirming that there wasn't a single drop of water present; in fact, many areas had cracked and dried up.
Something unusual must be afoot!
I took out a talisman from my pocket, then turned off the flashlight. Holding the talisman with my right hand, I began to change the hand seals while reciting the incantation.
"Ultimate Earth, Mystical Arts Have Methods, Command!"
As soon as I finished the incantation, I executed the final hand seal. The talisman ignited spontaneously without fire, illuminating the entire well.
"So that's how it is!" Through the light of the talisman, I saw that the well was filled with a thick Eerie Energy, emanating from the center of the well. The stone I had thrown earlier hadn't actually landed in water; instead, it had landed on top of the Eerie Energy, which was why it produced a sound similar to a stone hitting water.
"What exactly is down there? How can there be such strong Eerie Energy!" I turned my flashlight back on and shone it at the center of the well, but found nothing particularly special.
"Let's dig and see!" I took out my Peach Wood Sword and began to excavate the soil at the bottom center of the well. Perhaps due to the Eerie Energy, the ground at the bottom was not as hard as I had imagined; I easily dug deep with my Peach Wood Sword.
After about ten minutes of digging, reaching half a meter deep, I finally found the source of the Eerie Energy. In the very center of the well's bottom stood a coffin buried there, and the Eerie Energy was emanating from within it.
"Finally dug it out!" I wiped the sweat from my forehead; I was utterly exhausted and sat down on the ground, letting out a sigh of relief.
"What could be inside this coffin?" Looking at the coffin on the ground reminded me of that Human Skin Paper Spirit fiercely guarding whatever was inside the well earlier, refusing to let me approach. Whatever was inside this coffin was definitely not simple.
My current state wasn't great, so I didn't dare to open the coffin recklessly. After resting for about ten minutes and feeling my strength returning somewhat, I prepared to open the coffin at the bottom of the well.
I had only excavated one side of the coffin; in fact, ninety percent of it was still buried underground. I didn't have suitable tools and wasn't planning to dig it all out.
I walked back in front of that coffin and noticed that its black lacquer had faded for some unknown reason, revealing wood that seemed corroded and completely fragile.
"How could this happen?!" This was my first encounter with such a situation; I couldn't understand what was going on. Not daring to be careless, I took out another talisman and placed it on top of the coffin while quickly forming hand seals with both hands.
"Ultimate Earth, Mystical Arts Have Methods, Command!"
As I executed the final hand seal, I saw that the talisman ignited spontaneously without fire, transforming into a raging flame that began to burn on top of the coffin and grew increasingly fierce.
If it were just an ordinary coffin, the talismans wouldn't have burned at all, because what fueled their flames was the Eerie Energy emanating from within the coffin.
As the fire flared up, a tiny worm, no bigger than a finger, crawled out from the gaps of the coffin. The worm was pitch black, with a pair of antennae on its head, and its eyes were nowhere to be seen. What caught my attention most were its long, sharp fangs, and it emitted a faint Corpse Stench.
"What the hell is this thing!" I swung my Peach Wood Sword at the worm in front of me. It remained motionless, and upon being struck by the Peach Wood Sword, it turned into a puddle of green mush that released a pungent Corpse Stench.
I frowned and covered my nose as I stepped back a few paces. "Could this be a Corpse Worm?"
Just after I crushed that Corpse Worm, an unusual sound came from inside the coffin. I shone my flashlight in that direction and was met with a scene that made my scalp tingle.
The side of the coffin had been completely ripped open, and a massive swarm of Corpse Worms surged out from within—thick and black, at least three or four thousand of them. The Corpse Worms showed no fear of the flames above; they charged straight through and extinguished the talisman fire, although some were burned to death in the process.
"How could there be so many Corpse Worms?" I swallowed hard at the sight before me, terrified of attracting their attention and too afraid to make any sudden moves.
After extinguishing the talismans, the Corpse Worms stopped in place, motionless. Seeing them like this relieved me, but just as I was about to leave, suddenly all the Corpse Worms raised their heads and pointed their antennae at me.
"This is bad!" A sense of foreboding washed over me as I took in the scene before me.
