After listening to Lan Yue's account, I had already guessed most of the situation. Coupled with the strong Eerie Aura I felt in the bathroom mirror earlier, I was certain that the troublesome ghost was in the room next door.
I stroked my chin and asked, "Sister Zhang Yang, do you know who lives in the house next door?"
As a police officer, Zhang Yang's keen intuition led her to understand why I was asking. She shook her head, "I've been living here for a while now. I'm at the station during the day and come back late at night, so everyone is usually asleep by then. I don't know many people."
"However, there's one thing that bothers me. Every time I come back at night, I never see any lights on in the room next door."
I nodded thoughtfully and said, "Sister Zhang Yang, you should accompany Lan Yue to the hospital for a check-up. Don't come back tonight. This place will be fine with just me and Qu Liang!"
Qu Liang shot me a glare and said, "Jiang Ling, why didn't you ask me before making that decision?"
Feeling a bit embarrassed, I rubbed my ear and smiled sheepishly, "Beautiful Qu, my abilities are limited on my own. I might not be able to handle that ghost by myself; please stay and help me!"
Based on my years of experience, ghosts that appear to be young are often children who died unexpectedly. Their Grievance is usually heavy and difficult to deal with.
Qu Liang looked at me and snorted, "Hmph, this time I'll let it slide, but don't let it happen again!"
I quickly nodded in agreement and flattered Qu Liang a few more times until her attitude softened.
Zhang Yang initially wanted to stay and investigate as well, but I quickly shook my head and said, "Sister Zhang Yang, Lan Yue needs someone to take care of him. Both Qu Liang and I can't go; we have to trouble you instead. Plus, as a police officer, your identity might make it inconvenient for others to know you're investigating."
After my persuasion, Zhang Yang ultimately gave up on staying behind. She nodded and helped Lan Yue downstairs.
As they were leaving, Lan Yue turned around and winked at me with a blissful expression on his face. He probably didn't expect that he would end up benefiting from this misfortune.
Qu Liang and I saw them off in a taxi before returning to the door of Zhang Yang's neighboring room.
Qu Liang curiously asked, "Jiang Ling, what are we going to do next?"
"Of course we need to check what's going on inside first to prepare for tonight!" I walked over and knocked firmly on the door several times. Then I casually made up an excuse and called out, "Is anyone home? It's Old Wang from next door; I've forgotten my keys. Do you have the property management's phone number?"
I knocked for five or six minutes without any response from inside; no one came to open the door. Instead, a kind lady from next door heard the noise and generously provided me with the property management's phone number.
I thanked the lady and then pulled Qu Liang into Zhang Yang's room. I said, "Beautiful Qu, I think there's no one in that room right now. How about we sneak in?"
Qu Liang sat on the sofa in the living room, curiously asking, "How do we get in?"
I walked out to the balcony and glanced at the opposite balcony. I noticed that the two balconies were only about one and a half meters apart, and there were no security bars on the opposite side. I could easily climb over.
Looking down, I was relieved to see that it was only a two-story building, not too high off the ground, and there was a lawn below. Even if I fell, it wouldn't be a big deal.
I stretched a bit and said, "Beautiful Qu, I'll climb over to the balcony first. Once I'm there, I'll open the door for you!"
Qu Liang looked at the opposite balcony, her brow furrowing as she worriedly asked, "Jiang Ling, please be careful not to fall!"
I patted my chest and flashed a confident smile. "Don't worry! I know my own skills; this little challenge is nothing for me!"
After warming up, I stood on the balcony, aimed for my landing spot, took a deep breath, and jumped over.
"Whoa!" Although I successfully landed on the opposite balcony, I was annoyed that my foot caught on the edge of the balcony, causing me to faceplant onto the ground.
"Jiang Ling, are you okay?" Qu Liang shouted from across.
I quickly got up from the ground, brushed off the dust from my clothes, and smiled at Qu Liang. "I'm fine! How could anything happen to me?"
Qu Liang looked at me with a strange expression and pointed at me. "Jiang Ling, it seems like you're bleeding!"
I hurriedly wiped my nose and was surprised to find that I really was bleeding a bit. Thankfully, it was just a small amount and had already stopped.
Feeling embarrassed, I waved at Qu Liang and laughed. "It's not blood; I just bumped into some ketchup on the ground."
"You don't need to worry about those details; let's focus on what we came here for!" After saying that, even I didn't believe my excuse. Feeling awkward, I quickly turned around and pushed open the window of the room to climb inside. I didn’t hear any of the laughter behind me.
Once inside, I felt an overwhelming sense of grievance fill the room. Although it was daytime outside, this room was very dimly lit, creating an uncomfortable atmosphere.
"It looks like I didn't come to the wrong place!" I walked into the living room of the room and surveyed my surroundings. The layout seemed quite similar to Zhang Yang's room.
However, the hygiene in the room was not very good; dust was everywhere, indicating that it had been a long time since anyone had lived there.
If a house is left unoccupied for an extended period, the presence of any living person fades away, allowing those lurking spirits to occupy the space and cultivate their powers. I wondered if that ghost had appeared here by chance.
As I pondered the ghost's presence, I quickly walked towards the door of the room, preparing to let Qu Liang in.
"Wait? Could this be the owner of the house?!" When I reached the doorway, I noticed several picture frames hanging on the wall. Inside them were three people: a couple in their thirties and a child around seven or eight years old, resembling what Zhang Yang had described.
I stroked my chin and muttered to myself, "Could this child be that ghost?"
The more I thought about it, the more uneasy I felt. I decided to open the door and call Qu Liang in to investigate together. As I gripped the doorknob and prepared to turn it, a chill ran down my spine, and all the hair on my back stood on end as if someone were peering at me from behind.
I quietly activated my Yin-Yang Eyes and quickly turned to look behind me. To my surprise, there was no ghostly figure or anyone standing there.
"How strange!" I thought, puzzled. Could it be that I was hallucinating? I touched my ear and glanced around. At that moment, I noticed two sets of footprints left on the floor behind me.
One set of footprints was mine, but the other set appeared to belong to a child. Yet there was no one behind me—no shadow or ghostly figure at all.
I hadn’t sensed anything unusual behind me just moments ago, which felt very wrong. I took out two talismans from my pocket and said, "This ghost is not simple!"
