My name is Jiang Ling, and I am eighteen years old, currently a senior in high school. Sitting across from me are my three roommates, and we are playing a game called Truth or Dare.
The chubby guy sitting opposite me is named Hu Yalong, and he is a tycoon. According to him, his family's company owns all the buses in the city. Usually, the three of us tag along with him for food and drinks.
To my left is a handsome guy wearing glasses named Li Hongze, who has the best academic performance in our dorm. We often copy our homework from him.
On my right is a seemingly listless guy named Lan Yue, who is an incredibly skilled hacker, though he rarely shows off his abilities in front of us. Whenever we want to watch some inappropriate videos, he’s the one who manages to get them for us.
I am the most ordinary person in our dorm; my family doesn’t have much money, I’m not interested in studying, and I don’t understand much about things online.
My only advantage is that I am quite strong. Whenever the three of them encounter trouble that can be resolved with force, I rush in to help without hesitation.
Returning to the game, we are currently playing Truth or Dare.
Our rules are simple: each person draws a card from a deck, and whoever draws the Joker must face a punishment.
There are only four cards left on the table, and one of them is the Joker. In this final round, someone is bound to draw it.
Li Hongze glanced at the time and said, “Brothers, it’s almost lights out; this is the last round!”
We nodded, feeling a bit tense; none of us wanted to draw that Joker.
Previously, Lan Yue drew the Joker and chose a dare. In the end, he had to wash all the stinky socks we had accumulated together; even now, his hands still smell foul.
In this last round, no one knows what the punishment will be next. But one thing is certain: it will be worse and more humiliating than washing stinky socks.
Hu Yalong looked the most relaxed because he was the first to draw this round; his chances of drawing the Joker were minimal. He rubbed his hands together and said, “Brothers, I’ll go first!”
After hesitating for a moment, Hu Yalong chose the second card: “Please don’t be the Joker! Please don’t be the Joker!”
As he muttered those words, he flipped over the card in his hand.
The three of us saw the playing cards chosen by Hu Yalong and immediately burst into laughter, saying, "Haha, Fatty, congratulations!"
"My luck is just terrible!" Hu Yalong sighed, throwing the joker onto the table. "I choose truth!"
"That's boring!" Lan Yue had initially wanted to take this opportunity to get back at Hu Yalong since he was the one who made him wash his stinky socks before, but he didn't expect Hu Yalong to be so cowardly.
Suddenly, I felt an impulse to prank Hu Yalong, so I looked at him mischievously and patted his shoulder. "Fatty, are you really going to choose truth?"
Hu Yalong nodded. "If you have any questions, go ahead and ask!"
I exchanged glances with Li Hongze and Lan Yue, calling them over to share my idea.
In our dormitory, I was known for having the most mischievous ideas. When they heard my plan, both of them let out a wicked laugh. We then took out our phones and spent quite some time tinkering with them.
After we finished, we returned to our previous spots.
"Fatty, I'll ask our question first, and then I'll give you another chance to choose again. How does that sound?"
Hu Yalong looked at us with our mischievous grins and said somewhat nervously, " Brother Jiang Ling, Hongze, Yueyue, we're brothers; don't go too far!"
I nodded. "We just bought three inflatable dolls on Taobao, and the recipient's information is under your name. The Alipay account is also yours. All you need to do is tell us your Alipay password!"
Li Hongze exaggeratedly laughed. "Haha, Fatty! We thought of you and specifically found three sellers that don’t support refunds or returns. Plus, they ship quickly; they should arrive at the school’s mailroom by tomorrow afternoon!"
If Hu Yalong dared to give us his Alipay password, he could expect the lady in the mailroom to announce over the intercom: "Hu Yalong from Class 7 of Senior Year Three, your inflatable dolls have arrived; please come to the mailroom to collect them!"
At that point, Hu Yalong would likely become a celebrity in the entire school.
Hu Yalong's face twitched a few times as he pointed at us three. "You guys are ruthless! I choose dare!"
Hu Yalong's choice was within our expectations. We put away our phones and turned to Lan Yue.
It was Hu Yalong who had made Lan Yue wash his stinky socks earlier, and now it was Lan Yue's chance to get back at him.
Sure enough, Lan Yue did not disappoint us. He pointed outside and said, "Fatty, I won't make it hard for you. Just go take a lap around the Athletic Field and snap a few photos before coming back!"
It was nearly ten o'clock, and outside it was so dark that one couldn't see their hand in front of their face. No one would be wandering around out there. The Athletic Field had no streetlights; it was pitch black, and there was definitely no one inside.
The Athletic Field wasn't far from the dormitory; a round trip would take just over ten minutes at most.
When Hu Yalong heard Lan Yue's daring challenge, a confident smile spread across his face. He patted his chest and declared, "Brothers, just wait here! Fatty will be back in no time!"
With his phone in hand, Hu Yalong confidently walked out of the dormitory.
Seeing that Fatty showed no signs of fear, Lan Yue remarked, "Is Fatty trying to fool us? Should we send someone to follow him?"
It was already dark outside, and the eerie energy seemed to thicken. If Hu Yalong had bad luck, he might encounter something unpleasant. For some reason, I felt a twinge of concern for Hu Yalong's safety.
I stood up and said, "I'm brave; I'll keep an eye on Fatty!"
Meanwhile, as Hu Yalong stepped out of the dormitory door, he froze in place, showing no intention of moving forward.
Back in the dormitory, there had been light all around him and people nearby, so the outside hadn't seemed too frightening. But as soon as he stepped out into the darkness, he saw nothing but a black void ahead of him. There wasn't a single person around, and the silence allowed him to hear his own breathing clearly.
"Meow~~" At that moment, a Black Cat suddenly jumped out from the bushes. Hu Yalong was startled by the cat and broke into a cold sweat; his heart began to race.
Hu Yalong was a real man. Although he felt scared inside, he didn't back down. Taking a deep breath, he muttered to himself, "What am I afraid of? Fatty will be back soon; I can't let Lan Yue and the others look down on me!"
Every twenty meters along the school road stood a streetlight. The light from these lamps wasn't very bright; it barely illuminated the path enough to prevent anyone from tripping.
Hu Yalong ran towards the Athletic Field, following the row of streetlights. The journey was uneventful, except for the initial encounter with a Black Cat; he hadn't faced anything frightening since then.
After five minutes, Hu Yalong arrived at the Athletic Field.
“Quickly take a few photos, and then we’re done!” Hu Yalong pulled out his phone and snapped several pictures before putting it away, ready to head back.
“What’s going on?” As he stepped out of the Athletic Field, he noticed that all the streetlights ahead had suddenly gone out, and even the lights in the dormitory were off, leaving the surroundings shrouded in darkness.
Hu Yalong had experienced similar situations before, but this time he was alone outside.
His heart raced faster than before, pounding three or four times quicker; he could even hear his heartbeat clearly.
He quickly reached for his phone to use as a flashlight when suddenly a delicate hand reached out from behind him. Hu Yalong could tell it belonged to a girl.
“Brother Fat, I’m so scared! Can you stay with me?” A soft, trembling voice came from behind him, confirming his suspicion.
Instead of rushing to grab his phone, Hu Yalong took hold of the girl’s hand and said, “Don’t be afraid, Sister. Brother Fat is here to keep you company!”
It was then that he noticed how cold her hand was—frighteningly cold, devoid of any warmth.
