I came with my friend to hear your teachings and to follow you. My friend wholeheartedly took refuge in Buddhism. But I have to embark on my own journey of seeking. You won't be angry, will you?"
"Smart young person, since you have your own ideas, why do you still come to seek my guidance?"
"Because I want to become a person like you, someone who can influence more people. That's why I must come to learn. I want to validate that my ideas are correct. Please allow me to speak so boldly and frankly about my inner thoughts!"
"You are an extraordinary young person, and I admire your talent. Please continue to do what you want to do according to your inner thoughts. Good luck, young person!"
"No, World-Honored One, please wait. You should give me some time to hear my frank thoughts. This is what I want to say to you, and I also want to hear your feedback!"
He smiled, a smile like none I had ever seen before, radiating a warm strength that made me feel the warmth of the world, providing a sense of security, and an unceasing desire to pour out my heart, something that ordinary people do not possess!
"World-Honored One, since you have taken refuge in Buddhism, following you can lead to liberation from all suffering, to attain enlightenment, to transcend life! You teach that one should do good in their actions and conduct, is this the shortcut for you to escape suffering? You always talk about cause and effect, that only by sowing good seeds can one reap a beautiful kingdom in the next life. But do you know, this cycle of rebirth is illusory, can it really come to every person? I do not want such a cycle, I want to be blessed for generations to come, to truly live in the present under God's guidance, in a kingdom without suffering, not reincarnation, not a cycle, those are unrealistic expectations! Can you achieve that?"
"Your thoughts are not wrong, so please continue to pursue your goals! Can you really use your current path to restrain your worldly desires? It's very difficult for you, but as a Buddhism disciple, nothing is impossible for me!"
"I have already distanced myself from these thoughts!" My voice grew louder and louder.
"I hope that these disciples who have entered Buddhism can all achieve their goals. I can only make choices for my own life, and I am not qualified to judge others' lives, so I have to refuse! What worries me is that if I join you, I can only achieve some superficial desires, while what I pursue is true self-transcendence! What I want is happiness in this world."
"You are very clever, my friend! Clever enough to know how to express your thoughts, but you should be cautious about your overly clever intellect!"
He left me, turned and walked away, but his voice, appearance, and smile are deeply engraved in my mind.
Although I did not embrace his Buddhism, I was deeply moved by everything about him. I also want to be like him, possessing a rich inner world and that sense of inner conviction.
I think I will no longer be tempted by any teachings, because not even the profound disciples of Shakyamuni could tempt me.
I lost my good friend Julie. She used to believe in me so much, but now she believes in him. I will not live in anyone's shadow. What I gain is myself!
