Li Daqiu looked at Wang Yi with displeasure and directly pulled out a stack of red bills from his bag. "Miss, I really like this spot. Why don't you switch with me?"
Ten red bills were laid out in front of Wang Yi. Her eyes widened in surprise.
"Wait a moment, let me discuss it with my friend," Wang Yi said, tugging at my arm and pulling me down from the upper bunk. "Zhou Xinran, that lady wants to switch seats with us. Let's do it."
I lowered my voice. "Wang Yi, don't you find it strange? Someone who can casually pull out a hundred thousand yuan would choose to take a train?"
Wang Yi's expression changed.
I continued to persuade her, "Wang Yi, don't get scammed."
"Zhou Xinran, how can you say that?" Wang Yi's face grew increasingly grim. "If someone wants to switch seats with us, we shouldn't jump to conclusions about them."
I was getting anxious. "Wang Yi!"
But Wang Yi ignored me and took down my suitcase. "I've switched with that lady."
With that, she climbed up to Li Daqiu's upper bunk.
I stood there in shock.
Suddenly, a thought flashed through my mind. Originally, Wang Yi and I were supposed to be in the lower bunk of carriage 3, but now we had ended up in the upper bunk of carriage 18.
In just a few minutes, Li Daqiu had arranged so many beds.
It could only be done through collusion!
A chill ran down my spine.
My fingers turned white from gripping tightly.
Wang Yi chatted with Li Daqiu for a bit. Li Daqiu asked her some basic questions, such as where she was from, where she was going, how many people were in her family, and whether her parents were alive.
Wang Yi was naive and answered everything without hesitation. "I'm going to Seaside City for school," she said enthusiastically. "Sister, are you also going to Seaside City?"
"We're also headed to Seaside City," Li Daqiu replied with a smile. "I have to take my son with me since no one can look after him."
"That's quite a coincidence," Wang Yi said in surprise. "We can look out for each other on this journey."
"What about your parents?" Li Daqiu asked casually, "Why didn't they send you to school?"
Wang Yi paused for a moment, then let out a bitter laugh. "My dad passed away long ago, and my mom... is just like him."
Li Daqiu was taken aback for a second and smiled awkwardly. "I'm sorry, I didn't know..."
"It's fine," Wang Yi waved her hand dismissively. "It's all in the past."
I stood by silently, rolling my eyes in disbelief.
This fool, Wang Yi, had revealed her entire background in just a few words. Wasn't that just asking to be deceived?
I sighed and decided to ignore her, climbing into bed instead. I was so tired that I fell asleep as soon as I closed my eyes.
When I woke up, Wang Yi was no longer on the upper bunk.
I glanced into the carriage and saw her sitting at the door with two men. They were eating the pancakes that Li Daqiu had brought.
Seeing me awake, Wang Yi cheerfully called out, "Zhou Xinran, come eat some pancakes! Sister Wang brought some delicious ones."
The two men looked up at me and smiled.
I shook my head. "No thanks, I'm not hungry."
Wang Yi seemed ready to say more, but Li Daqiu stood up and took a pancake, walking over to me. "Here, eat this while it's still warm."
"I said I'm not eating," I repeated.
But Li Daqiu grabbed my hand and firmly placed the pancake in it. "Come on, it's tough being out here. If I can help you a little, I will."
With that, she sighed deeply. "If my daughter were alive, she would be about your age now."
I was slightly taken aback and froze for a moment.
A faint smile played at the corners of Li Daqiu's mouth.
She had spun a sad tale.
She said that she once had a lovely daughter, but she passed away due to an accident. As she spoke, tears streamed down her face.
