Entering City Hall, a chilling wind swept through the air, shrouded in thick black mist. The ground was stained with blood, evidence that the post-apocalypse had witnessed something truly horrific.
Scattered fragments of bones littered the floor, seemingly proof of their slaughter of the Survivors.
The Zombies had consumed everything so thoroughly that finding any remains was nearly impossible.
This left Zheng Yifan feeling terrified. Normally, when ordinary Zombies fought, some bones would still be left behind because these creatures only devoured the flesh, leaving other parts untouched.
But now, facing an enemy that could consume bodies so completely was something he had never imagined before.
Most of the fragments were teeth from human skulls and parts of pelvic bones.
He couldn't fathom why it was so horrifying. They had eaten everything so thoroughly, leaving only the more durable parts behind.
"Boss, I have this inexplicable chill," Li Ning suddenly shivered.
He had never encountered such bizarre occurrences while battling Zombies outside.
"We'll face even more challenges ahead. Check the positioning System and surveillance footage. Establish a route and see where they went missing. Where are the devices?" Zheng Yifan commanded.
Everyone was equipped with advanced gear that could track their locations at any time, yet once inside, each person inexplicably vanished. However, real-time data still had records.
Li Ning continuously reviewed the logs beside him.
"Boss, they split into three teams. Team One has seven members, aiming for the top floor."
"Team Two consists of ten members. Their target is this floor and the surrounding area."
"The largest group is investigating the underground area. This is the most populated team," Li Ning reported slowly while watching the video.
Zheng Yifan also observed the footage; it was lengthy and detailed each person's actions. Watching at zero speed, he couldn't even blink. Yet he could easily see exactly what happened, unlike an ordinary person who might feel disoriented by the events unfolding within.
In Zheng Yifan's eyes, these images formed a coherent sequence, albeit silent and moving at an incredibly fast pace.
"Stop!" Zheng Yifan suddenly shouted.
Li Ning felt a chill run down his spine.
"Leader, did you discover something?" Li Ning asked as he looked at the screen shared by Zheng Yifan.
On the screen, a person was seen entering a cluttered area near the entrance to the underground elevator shaft. There was no sound at all, nor any sign of enemies.
"Did you notice something strange? They all share a common point during the time close to their disappearance. If we can explain this commonality, we might find some answers," Zheng Yifan pointed at the images on the screen.
"It's been two years; don't you think there are too many Spider Webs? Although horror stories often depict haunted houses filled with Spider Webs, in reality, during an apocalypse, spiders either mutate or die off. There shouldn't be this many. Just look at this—there are far too many Spider Webs," Zheng Yifan said, gesturing at the screen and circling the images repeatedly.
In one of the pictures, a warrior was almost completely covered in Spider Webs.
This was simply too abnormal.
"Leader, do you have a spider beast here?" Li Ning suddenly remarked, as his screen switched to the last image of another team member.
The image flickered briefly before disappearing entirely.
However, in the final frame, something unusual appeared—a white beam of light emerged on the screen.
It looked as if light had penetrated through the entire display.
But Zheng Yifan did not see it that way. When he magnified the image by a hundred times, it became clear that it wasn't light at all. Instead, it resembled fine threads.
The threads were so delicate that they surpassed anything typical of a Post-Apocalypse scenario.
It was evident that cracks had appeared next to the camera, with shards of broken plastic visible on the screen, alongside images of the shattered lens.
This was all that remained of many warriors' final moments.
Zheng Yifan felt that his subordinates might have been caught up in this chaos.
This was not good news.
"Boss! We should bring more Fire Elemental Espers along with incendiary grenades and flamethrowers. Facing Zombie beasts, our combat effectiveness will be significantly reduced," Li Ning said with concern.
After all, both of them were close-combat Superpowered Individuals. They were at a disadvantage against beasts like spiders that could shoot webs; those creatures could set traps and threaten their lives at any moment.
They had no way to establish their own Safe Zone. Only those Fire Elemental Espers could summon flames around their bodies and automatically retaliate against enemies.
That was the most effective application of superpowers.
However, they had no opportunity to use them.
"No need for that. I'll take the lead with the Avatar of the Believers, and we’ll think of a way as we move forward. If those people are captured by the spiders, they might not necessarily die. Don't forget the spiders' habits," Zheng Yifan said solemnly.
Those were his elite subordinates!
Li Ning pondered over the spiders' habits and recalled their usual feeding practices.
Many spiders did not kill their prey immediately upon capture; instead, they would ensnare it in silk, trapping it while injecting venom—this served as their digestive fluid, allowing the spider to break down its food from within.
They would leave some prey alive for a while before killing it later.
The victims would be rendered unconscious by the toxins.
Of course, more often than not, it was about turning into a puddle of soft food with Venom.
What Zheng Yifan hoped for now was that the spider would completely capture him and then eliminate those spiders before injecting him with the toxins inside.
Moreover, Zheng Yifan realized that the number of spiders here would definitely not be just one.
Spider traces could be seen appearing in every corner. The large marks were all different.
Li Ning and Zheng Yifan entered the area, carefully observing their surroundings.
One by one, the Avatar of the Believers began to act independently, their goal being to find the spiders and raise the alarm.
As long as they could inform Zheng Yifan of the situation, that would be enough.
When hundreds of Avatar of the Believers appeared, it felt as if enemies were truly flooding into City Hall.
It was the first time Zheng Yifan encountered the enemy. He almost vomited on the spot. (To be continued)
